Overnight, Columbus police called to the east side after reports a man was beating a woman. The suspect taken into custody, charged with domestic violence and assault. Everybody knows unfortunately that when the w warmer weather gets here, violence escalates. That domestic violence incident comes shortly after a 17-year-old was charged in juvenile court with stabbing to death his father and severely wounding his father's husband in Clintonville. Three days later, a woman and her 11-year-old daughter allegedly stabbed to death by the woman's husband. So, are you fearful? It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.
Unless we do the right things. We're at 33% of all of our year-to- date homicides being related to domestic violence, whereas this time last year, we were at 35%. Columbus's Office of Violence Prevention for the past few years working hard to reduce those rising numbers involving domestic violence linked to homicides. This year about a third of the homicides are related to domestic violence. Similar numbers to the same time last year. That in DV homicides last year what we noticed is that there was a large portion of men which showed us that it
was being taken out of the intimate partner realm of domestic violence and we were seeing a lot more of that familial domestic violence. The OBVP working with city and county agencies on a variety of programs including domestic violence 101, a campaign that has a focus on social media and an emphasis on youth. They may not even realize that we're having conversations directed towards making sure that we're preventing domestic violence, but the messaging is there, the training is there.
