Rescuers Save a Pigeon Trapped in Thick Mud at a Dried-Up Pond

A team of rescuers rushed to save a pigeon that had become trapped in thick mud at a dried-up pond in Epsom. Using a log as an anchor to avoid sinking themselves, they carefully pulled the bird to safety. After the rescue, they cleaned the pigeon with warm water and dish soap to remove the heavy mud.

So, uh we're just heading out to the Epsom area. We've got a pond over there that's um dried up because of the hot weather. Uh and unfortunately, we've got reports of uh a poor little pigeon that landed in the mud and got stuck. So, we're heading over there quickly now to see what we can do to rescue. Hopefully, we can walk on the dry bits and retrieve the pigeon uh cuz we don't want to sink and we don't want to become a rescue casualty ourselves.

Can you see there's a little head there in the drain? Where that bottle is a bottle. I see the bottle. Yeah, and there's the head right next to it. Oh, wow. Yes. Concrete dry here. Yeah, even there it starts to get bogged down a little bit. Oh, it's like walking on cake. So, that's going to get quite deep. After assessing the situation, we looked for a way to retrieve the trapped pigeon without potentially injuring him. Without flat boards to hand and time being a factor, we set on using a log as an anchor.

Wow, it got really muddy. It's not going to get us there. Going to need another boot. It's not really how we do it. Wow, I mean, it's thick with mud. So, the best thing we can do right now is just to get this back to Wildlife Aid. This is going to need plenty of bath. It's very thin. What the conditioner his skin and feathers is going to be. That is awful stuff. In the just warm water? Warm water and Fairy Liquid. I'm wearing a white shirt, so the next one. Thank you. Just swap that over again, shall we?

What you doing? And after a wash and some rest, he began his recovery. And he showed us what a crafty little pigeon he was. Right, so we're just uh we're back over at Roseberry Park in Epsom. We can still see where the log was where we rescued this little pigeon from in the middle of the mud about 2 weeks ago now. That little imprint, that's where he was. Right, so let's find a nice little spot to release. Right, so I'm really pleased. I think we found a really good spot here. There's plenty of trees, plenty of shade, whatever. This bird can go wherever it wants to go. But um anyway, are we ready?

I expect him to go with ease. Off we go. So happy with that. He flew lovely, didn't he? Really well.
