Do you like old photographs? Me, not so much! Hi students, how are you doing? Today I am talking to you about photographs and memories. Let me preface with this. I am on vacation in Italy, And the first day I saw my sister again, she gave me these two small photo albums she put together for me. They are photographs of me, from when I was younger. And I, I don't know if you know, I hate taking pictures of myself. I don't like being on camera, I don't like to appear in photographs, and therefore, I have always avoided any opportunity
of being in a photos. So, if there is a party I take the picture, so I'm not in the photograph. This is my personality. I don't like being on camera. Ironically! However, my sister found these photos from many years ago. Some older, some newer. And she made these albums. This is the modern album, let's say the last 10 to 15 years, But this one here is the interesting one, Because it is from when I was young.
Let's take a moment to see what we find interesting. Here are some embarrassing photos of. They are all embarrassing, let's be honest. But let's start with this one, I find it super cute, Because you see a Manu This guy is Manu. Where is he? A slightly chubby Manu, A little chubby, a little fat, which. Here I was maybe a year old, I don't know. Pictured is my sister and cousin. And, what to say? I have a chubby past, Because in the early years of my life I was pretty chubby. I had a nickname when I was like that, I was called "the little Mussolini."
I think for two reasons: 1) for physical appearance And 2) for my personality. Because I already had a fairly strong personality. That was the first picture I wanted to show you. The next one. Let's see. The next one is this one. Because this pose here, with your hands like this, Is something that, I'm told, I've always done. As a child, in all the photos I had hands like this, arms like this. And, in particular, for one reason. I was obsessed with watches. I used to have many watches, now I don't use a watch, But as a child I loved watches. And every time I had a new watch, I wanted to show it in pictures. And so, in all the pictures,
Manu stands like this, so that you can see the watch, And it's a cute thing. I really didn't remember this picture. That's me in New York. I don't remember when, maybe 10, 15 years ago, I had gone to help a friend make a movie. And that is a picture of Manu in the New York winter. If you know me a little bit, you know that I love warm weather. I love the beach, I love being undressed. And go to a place where it's cold, And being forced to put on so many layers of clothing, I don't like it at all.
I must say, though, that I loved New York! I love New York City. I always feel good in New York, And despite the cold weather, I had a great time. But that is a picture of me, all covered up, And with the warmest hat in human history. Then there are a few photos, all embarrassing, from when I defended my thesis at the University of Trieste. I majored in translation And I wrote a thesis on a translation software. That's about twenty years ago! Translation software was an innovation for the translation industry. We now have Google Translate, We have everything. We have cell phones. But, back then, it was something complicated.
It actually was a translation memory. It was not translation software, Because no software exists yet that translates well. So, as human translators, we used and still use software that helps to remember things. They are translation memories. Anyway, that was my thesis And that is the time when I defended my thesis. As always, I was very nervous. And, a peculiar thing. I told everyone, friends and family, To not come to my discussion, because, as a shy and reserved person, I didn't want an audience, I didn't want anybody, in the most important moment of my life.
My thesis discussion. A fearful, panicky moment! And in the end, the presentation went well. I graduated and then became a translator. However, these are the photos of my thesis in Italy. Speaking of graduation, there is this other photo, Which is not a typical Italian picture. In fact, this is the graduation photo in Australia, When I graduated from the University of Melbourne. Such a weird pic! It's so odd to see myself dressed like this. I also had the hat. All these awesome things, that are not part of the Italian tradition, I lived them in Australia. And that's the picture that shows this second Australian degree as well.
But here side by side, And that's the last picture I'll show you, Because it's too cute. This is me, during Carnival. It is a carnival from I don't know how many years ago, many years ago, In which I was dressed as a judge And as you see I had here, hanging around my neck, a book which says, "The law is unequal for all." I was already politically critical because -- because in Italy we say that "the law is the same for everyone." But, as an Italian, my political comment was that the law is not the same for everyone, unfortunately. However, this was a video just to talk a little bit about my life, Since I'm at my parents' house.
This is their room, I changed it a little bit, because this is mine. The koala is mine. And the rest is all the parents' house. Greetings! Bye!
