I'm counselor for press affairs at the Swedish embassy here in Beijing. And Mr. Counselor is my honored guest today. And today I will take him to a traditional Beijing restaurant to experience the traditional Beijing breakfast. I'm very much looking forward that I'm really hungry and I'm actually bringing you a Swedish breakfast with the porridge and rye bread and all the things that we eat in Sweden have for breakfast.
Wow. That's my first time to enjoy the Swedish breakfast. Yeah. Ah that is uh the breakfast as well. Right. We will switch for one morning and today we're going to experience the two food cultures. Yummy Planet. Let's go. Let's go. The restaurant I will show you uh called Yari. Y is the name of the hotel and Li it means uh the owner's uh family name is Lee. The restaurant has the history of uh 80 years. It's famous for the pancake. Very popular. Uh-huh. It's not the pure sesame paste. It has 20% sesame paste and 80% peanut. Oh, I see. Peanut. Yeah. So, you mix it for taste or cheaper? For the taste. The pure sesame paste is a little bitter.
Yeah. You make the dough and it's made from uh water and flour or some yeast. Put a little bit yeast inside. It's not very fluffy. Yeah. What time do you start working in the morning? Oh, 4:00 in the morning. Have to wake up. Yeah, that's wake up, too. Yeah, the Beijingers, they want their um their pastries to be fresh. So, yes, the takeout counter outside is always bustling, serving a bunch of classic local snacks loved by generations here.
Look at this meatball. Yeah, that's a little bit similar. Very much Swedish meatball. What kind of meat? Uh, it's chicken. I see. This is fried beef. While waiting for our food, he took out ingredients to make an authentic Swedish breakfast for me.

Everyone knows these cups from being outdoor in Sweden and having like coffee when you go out in the hiking and such. So, it's like a new take on that is the lingum. You can have it for breakfast as today, but also for meatballs. Yeah. Meatballs and beef stew.
My daughter, she can have it. It's like the ketchup or the Nordi ketchup, right? Yeah. It's This is like the most classic Swedish dry 100% dry uh crisp bread. Early morning, late night snack directly eat. Yeah, sure. Oh, it's nice, but it's a little bit dry for me. I need a cup of coffee. Let's Let's do some coffee. Mhm. I think it's from the Yunam province. Yunam province. How many cups of coffee do you drink every day? Eight cups of coffee. Eight cups a day. Black big coffee. Yeah.
Oh, can't do this without Thank you. proper coffee. Mhm. Yeah. So, we're going for the uh for the porridge. I guess that's like the most traditional and the best part of the Swedish breakfast. Oh, wow. Uh so, it's a porridge made of oats. Mhm. healthy, sustainable, green. Mhm. Now, these are uh grown in the northern part of Sweden where there is a long days uh in the summer. So, they you can grow them without too much pesticides and it's a good grain and very healthy. So, you cook it and you make a porridge. It will take you like 5 minutes to make the porridge. We pre-made it for you.
Put the jam on the top of the porridge. Yeah, of course. Oh, really? Otherwise, it's dull. Okay. So, don't be shy. Have a lot. Okay. That is my first time to eat the porridge with the jam. You need more. Come on. Yeah. It's This would provide you with the vitamins and everything to get the day going. Some people also add some extra milk on it. This is like oat milk on the side. You can put pour some here. Wow. Okay, I will try.
Oh, it's smooth. The taste is not strange and it's warm. August. So, here we are at the breakfast restaurant having swapped breakfast. Mhm. And I will try the Swedish sandwich. And then you can try the pancake with the beef. Yeah. Three, two, one. M. It's really nice. Salty, savory. Mhm. M. The open sid is really refreshing, but I think still a little bit dry for me. I need a coffee with Yeah. Or is it bad to combine that? Should I have this?

Which one do you prefer? You know, at more when you wake up in the morning Mhm. you or at least I'm a bit conservative. You want to have your like there is a routine every morning. So for that sure I will go for the Swedish sandwich. But here in Beijing in this restaurant, this tastes super. Most Chinese people uh they eat breakfast in restaurants like this or in home. Okay.
Yes. Because it's very cheap um the breakfast. So and it's really yummy. So people usually go outside and go to the restaurant to have breakfast, but people in Sweden, they only have breakfasting at home, right? Yeah. Mhm. You do not have the breakfast restaurant. No, it's um Mhm. I think um morning routines, breakfast is very much something in the family. Mhm. Um you wake up, you prepare for the day. You can try this tofu pudding. The broth is the beef broth. People here um stew this beef and left the broth and to make this kind of um gravy.
Yeah. Gravy. Yeah. Very This is like a proper lunch dish, but it is a breakfast one. M breakfast one. I eat this for years. It's my everyday breakfast. I love the tofu pudding so much. Every day. Yeah. How do you think about the tofu pudding? I love it. The slim bombs. Um, also very famous in this restaurant. It has the beef inside. Okay. Yeah. There's a lot of beef going on here in the morning.
Yes. Yeah. You can bite. Take a Oh. Yep. Juicy. Yes. It's very juicy. you would have all of this as breakfast there. I mean, if you're an office worker or would you still have this kind of every um it depends. In old days, people in Beijing, farmers or workers, they work hard, so they need energy, so they eat a lot. So, they have this um heavy breakfast. But nowadays, according to your stomach actually. I see. Yes. I picked this restaurant not just for its history and amazing food, but also because it's right in Shahai, one of Beijing's hottest spots.
Wow, what a view, right? Yes. Uh-huh. Wow. It's one of the best season in Beijing. The scenery here is straight out of a postcard with a mix of imperial vibes, livelihoods, and peaceful wateride charm. It's really great to take a walk around after breakfast.
