Today's WNEM TV5 Morning Extra starts right now. Good Tuesday morning everyone. Thanks for joining us for TV5 Morning Extra. I'm Lauren Pico and I'm Christine Winter. Let's go to First Alert Meteorologist Matthew Mondro timing out rain chances today. Yeah, Christine, Laura, we are tracking some scattered rain which we've already seen some rain here early this morning. The rain chances for today though again scattered or kind of spotty. So really at any given point during the daytime
today, you will need to account for that possibility of some rainfall. Now some of the rain that we've had in Aasco County that's been winding down. Now we have some light rain moving in between Perry and AASO. And this is just going to end up leading to more scattered showers here this morning. And as we go into the afternoon, some scattered rain still around. Even a couple of isolated thunderstorms, but no severe weather is expected for today. You will notice the humidity going up though. Due points already in the low to mid60s. They've been increasing pretty sharply here over the last few hours, eventually into the low 70s this afternoon. And we'll hold on to this very humid weather through
Thursday. It won't be until Friday that we see these due points starting to come down. That humidity again, relief from the humidity and also some heat as we go into the weekend. We'll take a look at the rest of the hourby hour and talk about that extended forecast coming up. Lauren, we'll send it over to you. All right, new details now. Flint is officially putting a pause on allowing data centers in the city. The council just approved a 12-month moratorum on the controversial projects. Last night's vote comes as questions continue about the possibility of a major data center project, the former Buick city site. But for many local leaders, that decision wasn't just about what could come next.
It was about what Flint has already been through. One of the things we always said was during the water crisis, which is still going on, is that we will never put profit over the health and well-being of this community ever again. These are all aspects that we have a responsibility to make sure that we look into. That's why we need an independent study. For supporters, last night's vote isn't about stopping development. It's about making sure the rules are in place before it arrives. In developing news, police in Sagena are working to figure out who killed a man. Investigators say 29-year-old Adarius Robinson was shot on Phoenix Street near Veterans Memorial Park around 2 in the morning on Monday. They say he died at the scene.
Continuing coverage this morning, Bay City is another step closer to getting a new city manager. During a special meeting last night, the commission decided on moving forward with a second round of interviews with two of its four candidates, Brian Chapman, city manager in Sue St. Marie, and Richard Haymon, the senior public relations manager for good marketing. One commissioner was eager to nail down a date though for that next phase and streamline the process as much as possible. I would just ask that um any of the other vetting that needs to happen. I would hope that happens um so that we can move as quickly as possible.
The commission was not able to agree on a date though. Current city manager Dana Muscott retires at the end of this month. Stay with TV5 for updates. New details now. A third woman's death at Hiron Valley Correctional Facility in Washington County in less than a month is leading to new calls for answers and transparency. The state department of corrections says Saturday morning an officer noticed 36-year-old Ashley Ho was not feeling well and staff rushed her to the prison's healthc care area then transferred her to a hospital where she died. The department says her death was unexpected. Investigators are
working to figure out the cause. Now, a group known as Citizens for Prison Reform is calling on state lawmakers to give families the power to file formal complaints with the Michigan Department of Corrections and require monthly reporting of those complaints, which are currently restricted to inmates and legislators under Michigan law. We believe there should be public reports broken down by every single facility, and it needs to be broken down by the type of complaint. Last month, a 57year-old and a 28-year-old died at the facility four days apart. The cause of those deaths also under investigation.
Developing news out of Jese County. A man is charged with federal level felonies in a church fire in Flint. Federal prosecutors accuse 46-year-old Billy Chambers who lives in the city of setting fire to St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church on Dupont Street in late August. He's charged with malicious destruction of a building by means of fire or an explosive and other felonies. A reported strong armed robbery in Lepier County ended with one man under arrest in a loaded gun taken off the street. Take a look at your screen. This is what troopers confiscated from a 33year-old they spotted walking away
from the scene of a reported robbery in Oregon Township. It's a loaded Draco and AK style pistol. They say it was hidden in a baby stroller. wrapped in a t-shirt. That man is accused of carrying a concealed weapon and having a firearm while intoxicated. Across Michigan, the State Department of Health and Human Services is offering grants to nonprofit groups, local health departments, universities, and other businesses that provide prevention services to seniors. The state's looking for proposals that work to deal with age issues and also strengthen the prevention, detection, and response to elder abuse. Up to six organizations will split $600,000 covering October through next September.
The deadline to apply is July 1st. You can find the that link in the hot link section of our website wnem.com. All right, we are less than a week away from a bridge connecting Michigan and Canada to open. After eight years of construction, the Gordy How International Bridge is almost ready to welcome traffic. A ribbon cutting is set for this Friday on that $5 billion bridge that spans the Detroit River between Detroit and Windsor. Now, sources cited by Detroit News say that invitations went out after a phone call between Gretchen Whitmer, our governor, and also President Donald Trump's chief of staff. The president had spoke before about possibly blocking the bridges opening, which is set for June 15th.
More local news now. Construction is underway in Flint for Michigan's newest state park. The 230 acre riverfront park will stretch along three miles of the Flint River, connecting existing green spaces like Chevy Commons, Mop Park, and Vietnam Veterans Park. It'll become Michigan's 104th State Park, the first in Jennese County. Stay with TV5 for updates on a completion date for that. You are watching TV 5 Morning Extra. We are going to take a quick break. As always, we would love for you to follow us on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.
Matthew's rainy First Alert forecast is next. We are tracking some rain and some thunderstorms for your Tuesday. And if you do have any outdoor plans, well, you will need to at least account for that possibility of rain pretty much for the entire day today because there will be some possibility for showers all the way into this upcoming evening. Now, even right now, we already have some light rain trying to move into our southwestern spots like Perry, AASO, Ashley, or Chesan. Now, we are expecting through today at least a quarter of an inch of rain from some of these just sort of general rain showers moving through. But any of those thunderstorms could easily bring over an inch of rain
due to all of the humidity or that moisture that will be available to these storms today. Now, the first hour by hour shows more scattered rainfall by the mid to late morning. That's at about 9:00. Let's go into the afternoon here. This is say 2:00, for example. We still have some of these scattered showers and even a couple of isolated thunderstorms. And you can see this activity still popping up here even towards dinnertime and after dinner time, too. It won't be until pretty much after midnight tonight that we see these showers coming to an end. And then by tomorrow morning, a drier start to the day, but we could have some patchy fog tomorrow morning just due to the recent rainfall and the
higher humidity. Now, tomorrow afternoon, the hourby hour currently showing dry weather. We've seen a couple of our models suggesting perhaps a few storms tomorrow afternoon. So, we'll be watching that very closely. But overall for your Wednesday, we are still expecting some scattered showers and storms to come in here during the overnight. That's at about midnight tomorrow night. Then on Thursday, should be dry during the daytime. And then again, another round of storms by Thursday night. Now, for tomorrow night, storms, there is a marginal risk, really just an isolated risk for severe weather. Thursday night though, there's more of a scattered chance for severe weather. We have a pretty strong cold front coming through on Thursday night.
That's the reason why we are really keeping an eye on that storm chance and why there's a first alert weather day possible for Thursday evening and night as well. So those storms could be severe. Again, pretty strong cold front coming in on Thursday night. So that would be sort of the driver for those storms. You can see after that the rain chances a bit more spotty, kind of quieter as we go towards the upcoming weekend. But we do have some heat on the way. 88 tomorrow, 89 on Thursday. Now, that cold front will also bring us some relief from the heat and the humidity going into the weekend, too.
All right, still unfolding this morning, a new partnership means the city of Flint is a step closer to more mental health care. It is planning to use half a million dollars from its opioid settlement funds to increase inpatient beds from 19 to 70 at Insight Health Systems. The founder and CEO of the company says its treatments can widely vary from psychiatric disorders to depression and autism. But he says many people are not able to get the help they need because of a lack of beds. We have too many outpatients. They're depending on us when they're really in trouble. Life-threatening illnesses. We have nowhere to put them. So for every bed, we can increase our capacity at an outpatient level. Now, the mayor
believes this investment could help lower crime in the community. Meanwhile, Insight says it still needs to raise 7 to10 million in funding to expand. We're told the goal is to have the new beds available in the next one to two years. And staying in Flint, the city demolished a longtime vacant home filled with close to 150 tires. The city posted these pictures to Facebook, saying the Jese County Land Bank will continue removing abandoned buildings that pose a threat to neighborhoods and quality of life. There's also a reward of up to $1,000 for any information leading to the arrest of those illegally dumping items in the city. Also in Jennese County, sentencing is scheduled for a clown man after prosecutors say he
tailgated, pointed a gun, and crashed into a family because of road rage. Tony Leperins pleaded guilty yesterday to two charges of assault with a dangerous weapon. That's a felony with each charge carrying a maximum four-year prison sentence plus fines. Investigators say the confrontation on the road happened last December. Lespin's due back in court July 20th for sentencing. And in Mount Pleasant, a woman pleaded no contest to child abuse following the death of a baby. Angelina Dean entered the plea yesterday. By doing so, a charge of involuntary manslaughter was dropped. Mount Pleasant police say last July 4th, officers responded to an apartment on Oak Street where they found
an 11-month-old girl unresponsive in a bathtub. She later died at the hospital. Dean faces 11 months in jail. Her sentencing is set for July 16th. In continuing coverage, the search for a Michigan mother in the Bahamas has ended, but the investigation into her disappearance will continue. The US Coast Guard made that announcement yesterday. Lynette Hooker is from Onstead in Lenoway County. She was last seen in early April. Now, her husband Brian says she fell overboard while they were boating off the coast in rough water. He was arrested days later, but then released without charges. He continues to deny doing anything wrong and says he'll still look for his wife.
Meanwhile, Lynette's family questions his story. Across Michigan, a reminder for those going fishing this summer. If you like to cook what you catch, make sure you check out the state's latest version of the Eat Safe Fish Guide. Lays out how often you can eat fish from the state's nearly 700 lakes and rivers based on chemical levels found in fillets. This year, 59 guidelines were relaxed, while 65 became more protective. The Sagenar River remains among nine areas of concern, mainly due to chemicals like PAS, mercury, and more. You can nominate a veteran right now for the state's veteran of the year award. The deadline is this coming Monday, June 15th. The state's veterans affairs agency gives it out each year to a vet who's done the most to support veterans and their families. A committee of Michigan Veteran Organization leaders will pick the winner. It'll be announced this summer. And that person will also be recognized at the Michigan Military and Veterans Gala in Detroit in November. Nominate someone you know by going to hot links at wnem.com. And we have been following what is a rainy start to the day. And we're not done yet, Matthew.
Yeah, we're tracking some scattered rain today pretty much from start to finish. There's going to be the potential for some rain showers. Now, right now it's a little bit quiet on the Pinpoint Doppler, but we do have more rain to our southwest that is on that trajectory towards us here. So, I would expect more rain to pick up over the next few hours this morning. No doubt we need the rainfall. Uh but if you do have outdoor plans for today, just keep that in mind. There is the potential for rain uh pretty much all the way through the entire day today. All right. And stay weather aare with our TV weather app.
