This year, we're celebrating 11 years since I moved to the US, and I'll tell you the hardest part of learning English. Not grammar. It was all of this context that comes up in jokes. You understand every single word in a sentence, but then a native speaker drops in a reference or makes a joke, and everyone around you is laughing, and they get the context, and you're like, "Okay, um I grew up in a different country. I spent 25 years in a different country. I don't understand." So, today's a test. I'm going to tell you 10 jokes, easy to hard, plus a bonus one at the end. Getting this humor means you're at a very advanced level, and if you understand every single one, you're pretty much at a native level. Let's see

how many you get. Don't forget to share your score in the comments. Quick question before we start, what is the toughest part for you when it comes to context? For me, it's movies and singers. For some reason, whenever people mention a movie, I haven't seen it, and they're like, "What? This is something everybody should like." Americans get very confused when I tell them I don't know their favorite singer or their favorite movie. I'm sorry. I just can't keep up with everything. But, let me know in the comments below what is this for you. So, why are jokes this hard? Most English jokes work because one word has two meanings, and sometimes you only know one of them. On top of that, you have to catch both meanings

and about half a second while you're listening, and that's a really advanced skill. And a lot of jokes are very cultural. They come from a movie that you've never seen or a show that they were discussing because they were born and raised in the US, and you were born and raised somewhere else. So, these jokes just fly right past you. I still freeze sometimes when a group of Americans laughs at a reference I don't know. And honestly, sometimes I don't even know how to behave. By the way, quick heads-up. These jokes are for learning purposes. It's what Americans call dad jokes. They are puns. The kind of corny joke a dad tells at dinner while everyone groans and then secretly smiles. I'm not

giving you jokes that are contemporary that cool kids use. We're going to use these old dad jokes because every single one turns on a double meaning. And if you catch that second meaning fast enough, that's the exact skill that's hard in another language. So, go ahead and a laugh police. If you laugh, you got it. Why did the bicycle fall over? Because it was too tired. I don't know if it's funny or not. Like everybody has differences of humor, but we're going to pay attention to different things.

Two tired. A bike has two tires, the rubber wheels. But it sounds exactly like too tired meaning you have no energy, you want to sleep. I worked all day, I'm too tired to cook. So, the bike fell over because it has two tires and because it's too tired to stand up. Same sound, two meanings. Why did the bicycle fall over? Because it was too tired. By the way, a media free worksheet for this video. It's not just the jokes, it's all the idioms we cover with the meanings and example sentences plus a short practice section, fill in the blanks, a quick match the idiom quiz, and space to write your own sentence with each expression. There is an answer key at the end, too. It's free in the description, and if you actually do the

exercises after watching, these will stick. So, go ahead and download this free resource, and while you're downloading, we're on to the next joke. What did the ocean say to the beach? Nothing. It just waved. The keyword here is waved. A wave is the water that rolls onto the beach. The ocean has waves, but the wave is also what you do with your own hand to say hello or goodbye. You wave at a friend. So, the ocean didn't speak, it just waved. It made a wave, and it waved hello. What did the ocean say to the beach? Nothing. It just waved.

Okay. This one is cool. I like it. I used to be a banker, but I lost interest. The keyword here is interest. When you keep money in a bank, the bank pays you extra money on top. That's called interest. But, to lose interest is an expression. It means you stopped caring about something. You got bored. I started learning the guitar, but I lost interest after a month. So, the banker quit because they got bored. They lost interest, and a banker literally works with interest. I used to be a banker, but I lost interest. By the way, if you understand these jokes, but you could never come up with them yourself, I could never. That's exactly what being stuck at

intermediate level feels like. You understand almost everything, but when you go to speak or write, it doesn't come out the way you want. And there is a word somewhere in your head, but it just doesn't come out. That's the whole reason we built our course from intermediate to advanced. It's seven weeks, 35 short video lessons, grammar, vocabulary, writing, and how to actually think in English instead of translating in your own head. And starting from the standard package, you get a live speaking session with a native speaker every single week. That live practice is the part most online courses skip, and it's the part that actually moves you forward. You also get a mobile app, a speaking buddy at your level, and a

Telegram community, so you're never studying alone. And because you're watching this video, we're giving you free access to one a lesson from the course, so you can meet Vanya, a teacher, and see how he structures his classes and explains tricky topic. I'm pretty sure that after one class, you won't want to stop. More than 20,000 students have already gone through this program. Use the code Lingua Marina for $20 off any plan. The link is in the description. Okay, back to dad jokes. But from here, they get harder. Let's do a knock-knock joke because these are everywhere in America. Knock. Who's there? Lettuce.

Lettuce who? Lettuce in. It's cold outside. Did you get it? Lettuce is the green salad vegetable, the one you put on a sandwich. But say it out loud, lettuce. Lettuce sounds just like let us. So, the joke pretends the vegetable's standing at your door asking you to let it in. Lettuce in. It's cold outside. That's how knock-knock jokes work. The name always sounds like something else. Okay, number five. I told my plants a joke, but they didn't laugh. I guess my humor was too dry. The phrase is dry humor. In English, dry humor describes jokes told in a flat, serious voice with no big reaction. It's a style of being funny.

He has a really dry sense of humor. But dry also literally means uh without water, and plants need water. So, the plants didn't laugh because the humor was too dry and because they wanted water. Now, let's bring it into 2026. Here's one about AI because honestly, it runs half of my life now. Why can I never win an argument with ChatGPT? Because it always has the last word. To have the last word is an expression. It means to say the final thing in an argument, to win it by speaking last. I gave up. My sister always has to have the last word. And an AI like ChatGPT literally produces words. It answers everything. It never gets tired. So, it

always, literally, has the last word. Two meanings at once, winning the argument and producing the final words. Why can I never win an argument with ChatGPT? Because it always has the last word. And this one your kids might know by heart if they're growing up in the US. Why did Dory become a motivational speaker? Because her whole speech is just keep swimming. This one is from Finding Nemo. Dory is the blue fish who forgets everything and her famous line is, just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming.

Motivational speaker, someone who stands on stage and tells you to never give up. And keep swimming has turned into an expression that means keep going when life is hard. Don't stop. I know it's a tough week. Just keep swimming. So, Dory who literally says keep swimming but give the shortest motivational speech ever. Why did Dory become a motivational speaker? Her whole speech is just keep swimming. Now, a lot of those were classic dad jokes. The last round is different. These are closer to how people actually joke today online and in real life. So, they're the ones you're most likely to hear out in the wild. Get them and your English isn't correct, it's current. Let's start with one everybody can relate to.

Why did the couple break up over their Wi-Fi? Because there was just no connection. Did you get it? A connection is literally your internet connection. When the Wi-Fi works, you have a connection. You can go online. I can't join the call. I have no connection. But connection is also the bond between two people. We went on one date, but there was no connection. So, the couple broke up because the Wi-Fi had no connection and because the two of them had no real connection with each other. Same word, two meanings. The next one is also about AI. Why did I stop arguing with my self-driving car? Because every time I just let it take the wheel. To let someone take the wheel means to

let them take control, to let them make the decisions. I was tired of planning every trip, so I let my team take the wheel. And a self-driving car literally takes the wheel, the steering wheel, and it drives itself. So, I let the car take the wheel both meanings at the same time. Why did I stop arguing with my self-driving car? I just let it take the wheel. Okay, the next one is super Gen Z. It's the most online joke I'll tell you. Why are dates the most popular fruit at a party? Because they've got rizz. A date is a sweet brown fruit, but a date is also a romantic outing with someone. And rizz is brand new slang for charisma, which is the ability to charm

or flirt with people. So, the joke imagines the fruit called dates being the most popular at the party cuz they've got great flirting skills. It's mixing the two meanings of date with modern Gen Z slang. If that one landed for you, your slang is current. Most native speakers are reported probably wouldn't get it, or if you do, let me know in the comments. Okay. We're on to the last one, and it's actually subtle. If you get this without explaining, you basically think in English. Who are you? Are you a native speaker watching this video? Bye. Anyway, did you hear about the kidnapping at the playground? It's fine.

He woke up. Listen to the word kidnapping. Normally, kidnapping is a serious crime. Somebody takes a person away. That's the meaning your brain jumps to. But break the word into two. Kid and napping. Kid is a child, and to nap means to sleep for a short while. So there was no crime at all. There was just a kid napping, a child taking a nap on the playground. It's fine. He woke up. If you caught that before the explanation, your English is officially advanced. Don't use it as a test or as a proof, but use it to feel great about your English. So how many did you actually get? Tell

me the number in the comments, and here is your homework. Download the resource we prepared for you to once again go through these expressions and these jokes. And if you felt the gap today, if you're like, "I'm not getting most of it." That's exactly what intermediate to advanced course fixes. Code "lingua marina" gets you $20 off.
