Colts Trade Shakeup Could Put Jonathan Taylor on the Move After Nelson and Buckner Deals

The Indianapolis Colts are making major roster moves, highlighted by trading Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks for a third-round pick. With DeForest Buckner also dealt, attention turns to whether star running back Jonathan Taylor could be next. NFL Live breaks down the implications of these trades and what they mean for the Colts' rebuild.

Colts making moves Will Jonathan Taylor be traded following Nelson & Buckner trades? | NFL Live. | Transcript:

We begin NFL Live with some breaking news out of Indianapolis. Ian Rapaort, what do we need to know? The Seahawks have acquired Quentyn Nelson. The Super Bowl champions load up on the offensive line continuing to add to one of their strengths. One of the best guards in the NFL, future Hall of Famer, eighttime Pro Bowler, seventime allpro goes from the Indianapolis Colts to the Seattle Seahawks. It is a thirdrounder and a future five. That is the Seattle side of it, adding one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL to their group. The other side of it is just as fascinating. The Indianapolis Colts and Ed Dods, who is now running their personnel department, have started what amounts to a fire sale. Quentyn

Nelson is just the first. There were several teams interested. He was involved in sending him from Indie to Seattle. And you do have to wonder how many more Colt superstars get traded. Yeah, it feels like that could start happening. Certainly, Ian, you'll be with us all show long if anything happens today. Quinton Nelson has been named to the Pro Bowl. In all eight of his NFL seasons entering 2026, since the 1970 NFL AFL merger, he's one of just four offensive players to have that honor. The other three all in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Franco Harris, Barry Sanders, and Joe Thomas. He's in great company as we welcome you in here.

We got Mina Kimmes and Dan Olowski for the hour. Marcus Spears as well. Mina, what do you think of this move by the Seahawks? We'll get to the Colts side as well. I love this move for Seattle. So, the guard position off of great opposite Gray Zable has been probably one of the bigger problems with this team going back to the beginning of last year. Nelson is a massive upgrade. And for those who wonder, sometimes when you throw out eight Pro Bowls or those accolades, you're talking about players who have declined. He still plays at an extremely high level. Given up zero sacks this season, tremendous and run blocking on those outside zone runs that Seattle loves. And I think it's the

ground game where you're going to figure the impact of this uh first and foremost. So, we've been discussing this with Seattle, obviously coming off of the win, but this has been an inconsistent offense in large part because they can't run defenses out of those two high looks. There's also been a discrepancy between runs to the left behind Charles Cross and Grace Zable and then runs to the right by a full yard per carry. They're 12th in success rate running to the left and 30th running to the right this year. So you add Quentyn Nelson, kick Zable over to the right, suddenly you're more balanced. You can keep Sam Darnold out of those third and longs where he struggles under pressure.

I think there's a cascade effect, but to me, this is a massive upgrade at a position that they really needed to fix. Yeah, I think it's a move that can get you back to the Super Bowl. It's that impactful. He's that good of a player. And Tamina's point, it was their major weakness. I think the two butterfly effects are one with their the strength and the ability of both those guys as pullers does this offense become a little bit more of a gap scheme offense rather than the zone scheme offense. So both these guys pulling either direction obviously sometimes pulling at the same spot but what does what is the impact of that schematically and then the impact of it on their run and run action or

play action offense. The second part is I really think this offense now just becomes a heavy offense. This is a team that's going to run the football at will now. Multiple tight ends on the field. And I think that what it does is it makes the job cleaner and simpler for Sam Darnold. You're going to put JSN out there by himself. You either decide to cover JSN one-on-one, we throw it to him. Or if you want to double with the safety, we're now good enough up front where we can run the football at you with three tight ends on the field. So, there is a butterfly effect to this that is way bigger than just we acquired a guard. I think it's a monumental shift in the division.

Yeah, I look the football side is obviously what you both talked about with the run game, but I'm I'mma kind of take it macro and think about you may be one or two players away in this division from having an opportunity to host at home. And to your point, Dio, a butterfly effect. That may be Quint Nelson responsibility when it comes to what he's going to add to the Seattle Seahawks. I don't think I think all of these teams, the I'm talking about the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and San Francisco 49ers are in the market to upgrade at some uh substantial position that they think can change the identity of their football team or either overcompensate for a weakness that they

may have had going in. Think about it. We going into week eight. You have a great sample size of who you are as a football team. You evaluate and scout yourself up until this point during the season. And now we see a move like this be made by Snyder and the Seattle Seahawks. And for weeks we've been coming on television talking about how inept this run game has been. So it's not coincidental. Now you start that little arms race not only for a Super Bowl but in this division particular what something that could change the temperature of your entire football team. It allows them to do what they did on Sunday night to a higher degree which is control the pace of the game. I mean think about San Francisco and LA. San

Francisco an elite offense. LA I do believe is getting back on track. Also a team that grinds you down with their run game. Now Seattle has that ability. They're still going to get explosives, especially if they get defenses to play base to your point, right? You put big bodies on the field, you run the ball, then you get one-on- ones for JSN. But I do think this signals, and this kind of is a continuation of Sunday night, we don't want to live and die on explosives. We don't want to go three and out. We want to actually be able to put together these long drives the likes of which we saw on I also don't think they want to just

lean on Sam Darnold that much. I want they want I think they want to clean it up for him and make his job about as easy as it can get in their context. two weeks away from the trade deadline. It's November 10th. You mentioned this before, you alluded to it. What other names on that Colts roster could we see move between now and then? Yeah, I do expect the Indianapolis Colts and Ed Dodge running their personnel department now thanks to the firing of Chris Ballard to be active to very active. Yes, obviously Quentyn Nelson got traded. We know that DeForest

Buckner has been a big-time name on the trademark. The fact that the San Francisco 49ers, his former team, have a need at defensive tackle certainly makes a lot of sense. Something we are going to keep an eye on. Josh DS, a doit all receiver, is another one to keep an eye on. There's a lot of contenders who are receiver needy. That is a name that is buzzing at the in trade circles. Grover Stewart, also a really good defensive tackle, another player on an expiring contract. But let's talk about Jonathan Taylor because that's really the name with all due respect to the other guys that everyone wants to talk about. He is generating a lot of

interest. I know that there are several teams interested, several contending teams interested in acquiring Taylor. What I don't know is Carly Ersie Carly Ers Gordon the owner willing to do it. The Colts view Taylor as a big part of their rebuild. He is not on an expiring contract. Did just get paid and I don't know for sure whether they would actually trade him. Yeah. Again, as we mentioned, because of that Sus Gardner trade that took away the first round picks in the next couple of years, it probably just depends on how much they would get in return, right? But it's a good point by Ian Dan.

What team should be calling for who? Well, I'll start with Taylor. I think the only way they move Taylor is if they get a one for him. And the two teams that make the most sense are Minnesota and Denver. It sounds like that feels unlikely to move the player. I think for Buckner, if I'm the Chicago Bears, I have to get to Forest Buckner. I think the NFC North is such a good division and close division, it really comes down to what team is going to make a big move, an impactful move. And if you're Chicago and you know how good your offense is, getting a defensive tackle, and I know the Colts have been bad, that has been as dominant as him this year because he's been dominant changes your team and changes your

outlook. I think San Francisco certainly in the conversation. Then for DS, I would imagine the Chiefs call, I love Josh DS. It's a very similar player to like a Xavier Worthy in a way. A slender slot. I think DS is the better player. Another team I'd throw out there for DS maybe the Rams given Dvonte Adams's lack of health. I don't know if they would be a team that would enter, you know, adding a player like Josh Downs. I do wonder if though the Rams would need to add speed. I feel like the same way about Kansas. I know. No, I do too. I for downs I thought as better fits San Francisco also in the division and then the Patriots depending on what's going on

with Romeo Dobs and his injury and what they I know they love Douglas who's kind of a similar player but they need a reliable pass catcher right now. Um I had Buckner to Chicago. If that doesn't happen I feel like I would be upset. Um and Grover Stewart's a really good player too and there's a bunch of teams that could use his help including Chicago. Honestly, I wrote San Francisco and also the Buffalo Bills is a team I would look to add to that defense because that's an issue for them. Swag, what do you think? Yeah, I mean it's a number of teams and you like you all mentioned contenders. The farest Buckner obviously comes to my mind. Y'all know Dline brother and Dan took the words right out

of my mouth with Chicago. If you think you contended for a championship, you guys know how staunch I've been on three techniques when you trying to make a playoff run and guys that can play at a high level and generate their own pass rush without needing much help. Another place that I think about too when it comes to DeForest Buckner is the Green Bay Packers. How serious do they want to get with the return of Michael Parsons coming soon? You could potentially have a pass rush with four with that football team as well. So, look, we talking about really good players that'll fit a lot of places, but if you're a franchise, obviously money comes into the fold, but more importantly, how significant of an

upgrade is it right now to put you in a Super Bowl window? So, I think from that standpoint, Jonathan Taylor unlikely to happen. Would it be Minnesota? Would you make that call? like there are teams that have to think about services for a extended period of time or are you doing it for the right now? If I'm the New York Giants with what I have going, DeForest Buckner is a guy that I would think about adding to that front that they have there. So, there's there's places that it could happen, but I think it's got to be Super Bowl contenders when you start talking about dudes that could directly impact like we just talked about Quinn and Nelson.

Yeah. The only push back with the Giants one is I don't think I think they're early right now is the development of their team. When Marcus said, um, that's why I mentioned the loan game. Yeah, when Marcus mentioned Green Bay, my brain went to Detroit as well. You know, just pairing him with Hutch uh, and the way that they like to play, how good do they think their offense is, and how much better is going to make their defense. So, there's a lot of teams NFC North, whoever makes a move for me. a really interesting time as we're a couple weeks away from this trade deadline with really one team in the Colts possessing all these great players, all this talent potentially

what they can get from and they can't they couldn't win. Look at all these players everybody want. That's a totally different breaking news here on NFL Live and we go right to Ian Rapaort. What is the latest with DeForest Buckner? It is a reunion for DeForest Buckner. The former 49ers draft pick now is traded from the Colts back to his old team according to me and colleague Adam Shfter. It is DeForest Buckner going for a 2027 four uh fourthrounder. This is a trade that really has been in the works for the last 24 hours or so. The 49ers are also splitting the salary essentially with the Indianapolis Colts. So the Colts are taking on some of the DeForest Buckner salary just to facilitate the trade. But the 49ers are

had several injuries on the defensive line all across during the course of their season. Now they fortify with a big time addition to Forest Buckner to the 49ers. That's a massive trade. Huge pickup for the 49ers. Certainly a fourth round. Ian, it's just one fourth round pick. Is that I want to make sure we have the parameters right here. 2027 fourthrounder DeForest Buckner 32 years old on an expiring contract. That is a pretty good price for an aging defensive lineman. Yeah. Okay, we'll get Dan's and Mina's thoughts on that, but first let's go to Swagu. What do you think about the 49ers acquiring DeForest Buckner?

I love it. Just like coming off the Quinnon Nelson uh conversation that we had, the arms race in this division and we at that point now, trade deadline, teams are maneuvering, and obviously Indianapolis is trying to stockpile draft picks because they gave two away for S sauce Gardner. So, it just makes sense. I think it's a win-win for both organizations, but in particular, the San Francisco 49ers when you start thinking about their own division. I'm not going to be long because I know Dan and MK has something to say about this as well, but I love the aggressiveness from these NF these teams in the NFC West.

Yeah, it feels like the NerS have been chasing that penetrating three tech ever since DeForest Buckner left the team and now he gets to come home at a very reasonable price. He's got 20 pressures and six sacks on the season. So, obviously adds to that pass rush. I do think that run defense is maybe still potentially an issue on the interior of that San Francisco defensive line. Having watched Buckner this year, I know they like Grie Halton, uh, who's the young player that they drafted, but recently, but I do think having more pass rushing defensive tackles never hurt anyone. I think Oso De Gazua also

can contribute in that regard. I'm not sure personally it addresses what I thought was their biggest weakness, but obviously a helpful addition. Yeah, this defensive line right now when everyone will be there will be Odigizua, Buckner, Bosa, Mel Williams, that's a problem with Hton and Romelo Height and Keon White um as kind of like spell guys. I think this I talked about uh the Quinton Nelson trade being tremendously impactful. I feel the same way about this one. And kudos to John Lynch.

Fourthrounder seems crazy cheap to me. I think this puts a lot of pressure on the Rams now. And I know the Rams made their moves in the offseason, but just where the season sits right now, I do think this is now upping the ante. And then honestly, one of my big takeaways and how does Chicago not make this move? Yeah, you had said it earlier on in the show, man. There's other players who could potentially mean this is the trade deadline is a ways away. There's defensive Yeah. Who else like who should we look out for? other defensive tackles. Oh, you Grover Ste. I mean, yeah, he would be helpful.

Grover Stewart. Uh, Khalil Mack. Come home. I know he's he's an edge, not a tackle, but I do think a homecoming, a reunion with Khalil Mack. It's funny because Buckner goes to San Francisco would make a lot of sense. Yeah. Okay. I like those names. Let's get Ian back in here. What other names potentially for the Bears, Ian? As we kind of thought DeForest Buckner would be a good fit for them. Yeah, I would say wouldn't be surprised if Bears will look an edge to Khalil Mack. Another reunion would certainly be one that would make a lot of sense. As far as the defensive line, Grover Stewart makes a lot of sense. Don Payne

with the Washington Commanders, if that's someone they're willing to part with. Obviously, it's been bit of a struggle there for their season. That would be a name to keep an eye on, too. There are some defensive linemen available. So, I wouldn't be surprised if they at least inquire about him. And Ian, I'm just thinking about this when Dan's bringing up the pressure potentially on the Rams. Is there any update on Miles Garrett about when he could possibly return anytime soon? because it feels hard for them to make some of these moves knowing what they've already got on the roster.

Yeah, I would expect Miles Garrett to return to practice this week. That is my understanding of the plan. Will he play this week in week eight? We don't know. We don't know how his body is going to react to practice, all of that. But I do expect him to practice this week for the Rams. I just think this the today puts a lot of pressure on teams that truly believe that they're a contender. Seattle made a massive move. San Francisco made a massive move. LA is not going to make a move on defense. I think if they made a move, it would be for wide receiver. But that I'll go back to Chicago. This puts pressure on Chicago. I think it puts pressure on Minnesota and Detroit.

Those are teams that are good enough, at least in parts of their team, to be Super Bowl contenders. I want to add too, I don't think San Francisco should be done. They need a receiver. Even though if um Pier's coming back, Stribbling coming back. Can we really say that about San Francisco? Oh, this guy's coming back. This guy's coming back. I mean, Mike Evans could be back. Mike Evans has been amazing, but hear it a lot. Like I just feel like given this team's very realistic Super Bowl aspirations, they need depth there at least.

I think we'll find out over the next the trade deadline is two weeks. Yes. I think you'll find out in two weeks like how real Chicago, Minnesota, and Detroit think about themselves because if I think if they sit pat it says maybe we don't believe as highly in our building. But I do think that these two moves put a lot of pressure on them to be aggressive. All right. So obviously the Colts are in major cell mode which Ian told us off the top of the show. We had the breaking news certainly about Quinton Nelson being traded today going to the Seahawks. Now the Forest Buckner traded as well. Just to wrap all this up traded to the 49ers but still there's other potential players that could be on the move via the Colts to other teams. Ian,

who should we watch out for here is now we've already seen two big pieces go to other teams. Certainly have. You guys talked about Grover Stewart. I would expect him to get some calls as well. Josh DS, another big-time name to consider for the Indianapolis Colts. And all of these guys uh really have something in common, something that Jonathan Taylor does not have. They're all on expiring contracts. And you want to look at why one of the reasons Chris Ballard is no longer employed there. It's because of all these really good players on expiring contracts that all were not locked up for the team. You look at the really good franchises, they lock up their good players. It was simply not the case for

the Indianapolis Colts. As far as Jonathan Taylor goes, we will see if ownership budges on their stance of not wanting to trade him, but that is where it stands right now.
