J.J. McCarthy Leads Giants Past Texans in Overtime as New York Faces Quarterback Questions

J.J. McCarthy guided the New York Giants to an overtime upset of the Houston Texans, making the Giants the first NFC East team to win since Week 4. The result raises questions about whether New York now has a quarterback dilemma, while Houston falls to 0-4 at home for the first time in franchise history.

How about this, fellas? The Giants are the first NFC East team to win since week four. They matched win total from all of last season. Four wins there. They finished last season four and 13. JJ McCarthy his fifth straight regular season win as a starting quarterback dating back to last season. Scataboo's first career 100ygard rushing game. And the Giants, the first team since 2016 to have three starting quarterbacks win a game before November. You also had the Patriots do it with Brady, Brassette, and Garopolo. The Texans, in the meantime, start 0 and4 at home for the first time in franchise history. Just

when we thought they were getting back on track, it's the Giants who step in and snap that win streak there. Uh guys, we got to start right there. When it comes to the Giants, JJ McCarthy, I asked you guys earlier if you thought that the Vikings would regret not having JJ McCarthy. I'll flip the question on you. How excited Pete are you if you're John Harbaugh and the Giants that JJ McCarthy had this win today? I mean, look, he looked comfortable. He looked confident. He, you know, he didn't throw a touchdown pass, but he didn't throw a pick either. And I think that's what you want to see from him. He gets outside the pocket. He can move

with his legs. He made a lot of really impressive throws. It's just one game and you got that in perspective. Well, you got to slow the roll when a quarterback comes off the bench because I always say you need couple games to get an idea of what he is if you're kind of game planning for him. And we've seen guys come off the bench and look great for a game or two and then they become who they are. I'm not saying that's him because he really does look different and comfortable in this offense. But let's see it going forward before we anoint him as the guy. And here's the other part of the equation. What about Jackson Dart next year? I mean, if McCarthy takes his team and continues to play

well and they go to the postseason and win the division, then do you have a quarterback controversy or do you have a quarterback problem? What is the issue there? So, let's just let it play out a couple more games and then we'll decide if he's the long-term answer. No, the first thing I thought about was I put myself in Joe Shane's shoes and having just traded for a JJ McCarthy. He plays this well. Your team as a whole, you have a 250 yard passer, you have a 100yard rusher, a 100 yard receiver, and he's he seems to be understanding what this offense is asking of him. Me understanding the offense knows that there are built-in answers. You just have to be able to work there and get

there and find them. And he seemed to be able to do that today from an efficiency standpoint. But the part where I put myself in Joe Shane's shoes where you want to get the Birdman hand rub. You ask what about Jackson Dart and well listen now you know you have a tradable asset whether it's Jackson Dart or is JJ McCarthy if he continues to play well and now you know everyone's always in the market for a quarterback and now you have one that has shown the ability to be able to play and win games at this level and you can charge a King's ransom for it. So, I put myself in Joe Shane's shoes and had to hit my Birdman hand rub.

Listen, I'm all for sitting up here and giving Jackson Dart or excuse me, JJ McCarthy, the New York Giants giving their them flowers, right? Let's talk about this Houston Texas defense because the Houston's defense got their card pulled today. Pete Prrisco, listen. JJ McCarthy completed 20 of 28 passes, averaging over 10 yards in attempt, and he ain't been in New York longer than a New York minute. the fact that Cam Scataboo, didn't you say he had his first career hundredyard game? This is a guy who he's tough, he's physical, he's not the most efficient runner. You allow Cam Scataboo to have his first career 100-yard rushing day after getting bent for putting the ball on the football

ground. Then on top of that, you allow the Giants in the fourth quarter to go on a 14play 80 yard touchdown drive that took up eight minutes of the fourth quarter when at this point in the game, this is where defenses say, "What? It's time to bow up and it's time to give the ball back to our offense to give them a chance to score points and win us the football game." The Houston Texans defense didn't do any of this. They couldn't cover anybody. They couldn't stop the run game. When you saw the touchdown run of uh Cam Scataboo and the other one by um remind me of his name Devin Singleary. When you saw those two runs, what were they doing? They were running through the defense. They were breaking tackles.

This was the Houston swarm that we're talking about. They can't tackle. They're not getting to the quarterback again. They made Jack or I keep getting them confused. They got JJ too many Jays. They got JJ McCarthy looking comfortable like he's been a franchise quarterback for the Giants for a very long time. could not get the necessary stops against a quarterback who has been in a system for essentially two weeks now. What is going on? The question goes to De Mo Ryan, Will Anderson Jr., the leaders on this Houston defense. Where is the pressure? Where is the defense? Where's the pressure on the quarterback, the turnovers, where is it? Because I'll tell you this, the Houston Texans don't have the luxury of depending on their

offense right now. I'm sorry. CJ Stout has played well, but offensively they're not doing enough to where this Houston team can hang their hat on scoring more teams than their opponent. They need this defense to step up and instead they are stepping down and allowing teams like the New York Giants who are trying to figure out what they want to be offensively to run up and through them more importantly at home. They haven't won a game at home yet. Haley, it's time to make a change. Have whatever kumbaya you need to have. get this fixed and not just for one game, but for the longevity of the season or else this is going to be a wasted year for the Houston Titans.

Remember when Deiko Ryan took over calling the defense and he did it against who? The Tennessee Titans. It was a great spot for him to take over calling the defense. Then Jacksonville put up a bunch of points on him last week and now you have the Giants dominating him. It's not the guy calling the defenses, it's the players. Stingley's not playing as well. Lacader, the other corner clearly not playing as well. The deep pass rush is good when they have the lead, but they aren't they aren't in the lead a lot. So, I think there's a lot of problems here. Will Anderson, who's a great pass rusher, didn't have a sack today. Denil Hunter had one where he beat Andrew Thomas inside, but other than that, he didn't

have the pressures you need. Look, the bottom line is they have problems across the board on that defense. And just because you change De Mo Ryan as a play caller, that doesn't mean it necessarily fixed it. I think the big difference in in today's uh game was the balance of the Giants offense. The Giants offense kept that defense honest. You couldn't sell out to go and get a sack. You had to respect the run, which now makes the play action game uh more effective. And now you're hitting those wide open crossers, those guys down the middle of the field. So, if I'm the Houston Texans defense right now, you give up 188 yards rushing today, which we know, especially the way this team is built is

supposed to be a no, right? You're not supposed to give up that many yards rushing. At some point, and we've we've had all these discussions over the previous weeks about player only meetings, Dames, and how those go, but at some point, if you're this defense, you guys need to get in that room, and there needs to be a gut check, right? There needs to be people in that room need to be held accountable, held to a standard, and let everyone know that we are not playing to our standard. And for whatever reason that is, I think only the guys in that locker room can fix it. I did want to just briefly mention it was, you know, obviously not the best performance from the Texans, but we did get to see Tank Dell back on

the field his first time fantastic. 673 days. So, uh, I guess my final question here as we wrap this up, when it comes to the Texans, is this a playoff team in your eyes? A week ago, if you would have asked me that, I would have said absolutely. After today, I'd probably lean more towards no. I don't think they can win the division. They're already three games behind Jacksonville. I don't think they can win the division. uh playoff talent not playing to it this year. I got my shovel in the car. Just say the word and I will go get it and I will start digging that hole because that's the way. Yeah. No, I said

it's in the car. I said it ain't in my head. It's not in the green room. Not yet. But I think the better question why you got a shovel in your car for this show? Because there's a lot of people cuz Pete is anybody any really good? Like we're almost burying somebody every week on this show. The reason why and the reason why I'm getting ready to bury this Houston Texans team is because Nick Cacerio has built this team for the defense to take the charge and be the leaders, be the flag carriers, and be the unit when they run out on the field like, "Oh man, we got to deal with these guys and make like life easier for the quarterback, the offensive play callers, so on and so forth." When the defense is playing the

way that Houston is right now, you can't have a lot of confidence they're going to be able to win a lot of football games. All right, we will keep our eyes on the Texans. As a reminder, they started 0 and3 for what the past three seasons. They have made the playoffs previously, but uh not trending in that correct direction.
