Seven years ago, I made a promise to you guys that I failed to deliver. I said I was going to give a facelift to my high school crush. That is to say, I was going to rice out a top-of-the-line PC from 2004. But to say we ran into some problems would be putting it lightly. The motherboard died, some of the parts went missing, and the company that was making custom water blocks for us ran into some, let's call them, temporary operational challenges. But the biggest blow though was losing the man that I was going to tag team this build with. But you know what? When something's important enough, you overcome obstacles. We spent months tracking down a whole bucket of replacement parts. EK
is back up and running and put together some absolutely gorgeous old school cool blocks for us. And I called in a favor from someone whose bed I once broke. Can I please just borrow him for one day? Ladies and gentlemen, we got him. HE'S HERE. THE ONE AND ONLY ALEX FROM ZIP TIE TUNING/TECH. And we're going to finally finish what we started over half a decade ago when we were both younger and had fewer crows feet. Yeah. Um, hey, you still know how to do the thing, right? Do I have to do the segue to our sponsor? It's your sponsor. Damn it. I'm not getting paid for this.
Nexigo. Their Nova Mini light laser projector is going to be on sale for $499.99 this Prime Day. It's Nexico's first pure RGB laser projector. Pre-order yours today during their Prime Day sale with our link in the description. Why don't we start with what you've been up to for those of them who have been living under a rock? Uh, I've been breaking cars and people seem to enjoy it. I don't really know why. Well, you got your tech channel as well. So, Zip tie tuning and zip tie tech.
Yeah, the tech channel. I have to use an iPhone right now. I hate it. Sorry. You have to use an iPhone. Well, the sponsors want iPhone videos. Really? Yeah. Well, why don't we go back in time to before iOS existed? Do you want to do the honors of unboxing our old school cool motherboard? Absolutely. This was like the droolworthy motherboard. AI overclocking. Okay. Intel 875 chipset supports their Northwood CPUs that were capable of overclocking in some cases over 5 GHz.
DDR400. Damn. Dedicated graphics port. An advanced one at that. And most importantly, this is not the one that had all the power delivery capacitors blow up on it. That's important. Yeah. I love how this heatsink's attached with just pins that are soldered onto the motherboard. What a hilarious mounting method. Also, the logo. Why is it sideways? You had all the opportunity in the world to make a heat sink that goes this way. Motherboard manufacturers had simply not figured out aesthetics yet. All right. I don't know how much you remember about
putting together the original configuration for this build because nothing at all. Okay. Well, for our CPU, we've got what I think is a C revision Northwood 2.4 GHz chip that is supposed to be the M0 stepping, and it's not. What is M0 stepping? Well, it's probably more superstition than anything else, but M0 was the code name for one of their sort of process tweaks that was supposed to be very overclockable. Want to do the honors? Sure. Northwood CE's claim to fame was an 800 megahertz front side bus. So that was the connection speed between the CPU and the north bridge over here, which mattered a lot back then because the memory controller wasn't built into the
CPU yet, but rather it was built into this chip right here. So that link speed determined how quickly the CPU could talk to your RAM. That's wild. I know, right? Look how long these traces are. And look how many there are. It's like, could you just go from here to here? Yeah, AMD figured that out. Okay. Yeah, these old Intel sockets had like a lock. Look how few pins it has. It's so cute. 478 to be precise. On the subject of RAM, I really wanted to get my hands on some old OCZ Platinum. Oh, that's a sick from back in the day. But this Kingston value RAM should do us just fine because DDR1 was known to be quite overclockable
if you were willing to put enough volts through it. Which how long do we need this to live for? Day a day or two I think is probably lots. And we've got a custom cooling solution that I think you're going to love. Oh yes. What is the capacity of this? That is a whopping 1 billion bytes. Wow. That's so many. So many bytes. And we've got a second billion bytes. Two billion bytes of RAM. This is fine without this clip, right? Oh, yeah. No problems. Just put a zip tie on it. Is that put a really heavy block on it?
Actually, I think it's time to do that. Sick. Is that gorgeous or what? Absolutely incredible. EK's gone through some stuff over the last few years, but their new business structure is putting them in a position where they're committed to taking care of all of their old partners and employees. So, um, hey, I think the industry is better off for having a strong EK, and I'm wishing them the best of success, by the way. This is cute. Oh, yes. I love it. Nice. What percentage of your time do you feel you spend on the car channel versus the tech channel at this point?
Like 85% car, probably. This guy is sponsored by Canadian Tire, which in Canada is like basically badass. Yeah. There it is. So, fun fact, we call it the motherboard chipset because it used to be a set of chips, the north bridge and the south bridge. Now, it's just the one. Okay, fine. Bad tech tip. No one cares. They ask you how you are. You just have to say that you're fine when you're not really fine, but you just can't get into it because they would I like how I arrived here. Zero script, no instructions. Nothing has changed. It's always funny to me when I see posts that are like, "LTT is too scripted." Brother, you have no idea. What was the first PC build we co-hosted together?
Was it the $69 gaming PC? $69. A throw a bit of footage in there. So bad that it's almost good again. Everything that doesn't run on it just crashes immediately. Baby Alex, he was so small. He was so cute. So we can go down like the tiniest of bits. Oh, down. Yeah. Well, then that's good. Right there. Looks lined up. Oh, then killing anything. No, no, we're good. Uh, we do need to put some thermal compound on the north bridge, though. I forgot the freak is going on. You were right. It uses one of the mounting holes for the
motherboard on this side. I mean, I respect the out of the box thinking. It's not like there was a standard way to mount this type of a block on a board from this era. water cooling existed, but it was like small companies quite literally operating out of their garages. Like this is ludicrous overkill. Oh my god, it looks amazing. Right. Oh, she's bowing. Yeah. And that's like not even like fingertight. How is it so bowed? You've barely even tightened it. I don't want to do anymore either. You know what I do want to do though is install our ram water cooling. Every stick gets one of these spreaders.
Mhm. And then over the top of the whole bank, whether you've got two dims or four dims, we get this bad boy. Dude, teenage me would have actually had a magazine with this in it under my mattress. I had intended to save it for later, but do you want to just do the GPU now? Block everything up. Okay. The GPU block is apparently an extra special treat. I haven't seen it yet. I also haven't. I love this. I never get surprised in these videos. I always have to like go through script the whole thing out, make sure that something's going to go wrong.
I want to talk about our GPU. Already rad. Already amazing. Man, this was back when Arctic Cooling really got on the radar with their Silencer series of GPU coolers. So, you got rid of what in a lot of cases was like a wimpy single slot cooler and you put this giant big old thick This classified as a giant big thick cooler back then. You could overclock the stink out of these things. Man, look at that. I love back when overclocking actually like mattered. Oh, dude. Dude, dude, the Ultra had two power connectors on it. Two quad pin Molex connectors.
Ooh. Oh, it says LTT. That's so sick. That is so cool. Does anyone actually remember the point of this build? We wanted really nice parts on an old PC. I think that's all that it was. Mr. Frank, what can I do for you? You look like you need something. Oh, I dropped something. Oh. Oh, dude. Dude, no way. I needed to modify a little bit. Do we have an IO shield? Holy crap, he found a fit. Yes. Do we know if it wants pads or paste for the RAM?
These are excellent questions. Okay. All the screws are out though, so I can just go ahead and plunk it on. Yeah. Okay. I will do that then. Oh, lordy. That is an enormous gap to the RAM. So, we want thermal pads all around. Feels like old times today, man. Mhm. It's good to have you visiting. It's good to be working on a really computer. What are you talking about? This is so cool. Okay. I mean, I didn't You didn't say it's not cool. You just said it's shitty, which I cannot really argue with. Oh, you're not going to believe this, too. Oh, sorry. There's so many fun surprises for you today.
He has an AGP riser. I'm going to poop myself. Why would you? Okay. Well, did you know that AGP can have risers with enough 3D printing and ingenuity? That is so sick. So, we're going to try and mount it vertically, but spoiler, we did have some challenges with it. So, we'll have to see how it goes. What kind of challenges? The no worky challenges mostly. I feel like there's going to be some extras. lg.gg/flowplane. Still rocking the metal screwdriver. People have been asking ever since. Someone leaked it. Yeah. Not Cuddles. Was Cuddles tasty?
We did not. How'd you decide on the channel name? We're trying to avoid that. So, I get an exclusive scoop if I can get him to talk about it. So, I can be a riser, right? I can't tell them what they're allowed to say anymore. Got a dick. Did you say got a dick? Got a dick. I got a dick. Me, too. How about you, Alex? Yeah. Speaking of which, how come you guys haven't joined Flowplane? Uh, cuz we joined Patreon cuz we were able to sign up in a day. Are you guys doing anything in the way of like apparel or anything yet?
Uh, sort of. We're really terrible at promoting it. This one? Oh, yeah. Hey, there's something. I like your warranty. Show the front. Yeah. I warranty. Which is what you do when you are modding cars. So cool. But wait, there's more. EK did up a custom heat sink for the south bridge. not because we need it, but because we can. That is sick. So cool, dude. Our SATA ports are going to go so fast now. Are you able to overclock the South Bridge in these? I don't think I don't think you would ever want to. If anything, keeping the chips that had storage devices attached to them at stock was generally considered to be best practice.
The whole motherboards just bowed from the weight of the GPU. Well, oh wow. Yeah, we're painting the IO shield. We figure that's on theme, right? All right, there you go. Oh, yes. And to all the people that always said that I put the paint on too thick, I have learned. You know what? Oh, okay. Hold on. That was my first reaction, but look closer. That's actually pretty sick. That was my second reaction. I say we leave it. Just clear over it. Call it a day. Yep. When you apply a enamelbased coating over a lacquer based coating, you get a solvent interaction that looks a lot like lightning. Yeah.
You ready to do this thing? Yeah. What case did we get, by the way? Oh, 011. The most modern of modern cases. All right. Yeah. And EK sent over some special accessories for us. They've got a new distribution block. Ooh. that has an air valve in it. So, what you can do is you can hook up an air compressor and then purge all your water cooling fluid by opening up this valve, which is like, does it come up that often? I don't know. I've spent a lot of time blowing into tubes to get water out.
This is very nice. Okay. Who's going to be the one to put in this IO shield hopefully without damaging? Oh, you can do it. Oh, thanks. okay. Look, the It's designed to be clear. Okay. Yeah. Have another drink, Ray. This looks so amazing. Yeah, that's faking sick. This worked out way better than I could have possibly hoped. It's a really nice little touch. I actually don't know what they sent over for rads, but obviously we're going to totally overkill it.
Yeah. Okay, why don't I grab that? Do you want to throw the motherboard in? So, I was thinking we should get Andy on this. I brought gifts. Rice your stuff. Fake cup of fiber. Don't show them that yet. Oh, okay. Sorry. Blur it. Blur it, editor. Okay. What can I do? Um Oh, you got that piece off already? Yeah. Oh, freaking awesome. Okay. Do you want to grab the wrap? Oh, yeah. Do that.
Yeah. Let's get that distribution plate in. Welcome to my art class of how to wrap your uh PC with fake carbon fiber. Yeah. It's not my best job, but uh I think it's serviceable. Is that really the way it goes in with the pump all sticking up towards us? I guess so. Giving us the moon. I kind of want to try it this way. Even though we were informed that's not the way to do it. I've only ever used one of these once before and it was Oh, you were there. It was on the Singularity build. The easiest water cooling build.
Oh, yeah. That was so easy. I think this is the point in the video where we have to admit that this is not easy, though. No, this is definitely not easy. Did you shoot that one, Andy? Yeah, I forgot. But it's it's like an Alex and project. That's the theme of today's video, I guess. Bringing back all the old trauma. Oh, by the way, can I borrow a screwdriver from LT Ro? Of course you can borrow a screwdriver from ltstore.com in their new nuclear colorway.
Hey, when it's on their channel, I have to pay them to pimp the merchandise. I think we're too expensive for you guys. Now, this is going to sound crazy, but I would like to do just a quick sanity check, throw this in, and see if it even posts and outputs anything with the GPU and the riser because if we get lucky today, then great. But we have not been lucky with it so far. Sure. All right, you can do that and I'll figure out how we're plumbing this. Are we doing push pull for the fans? Oo. Uh, how many fans do we have?
Looks like a lot of fan. Looks like seven. Let's go. Three fans on bottom, one fan at back, and then three on top. Yeah, go maximum air flow. Before we can do a quick test post, I'm going to have to put in the power supply. It's kind of remarkable that all these years later, a top-of-the-line power supply today still has the connections that you need for an old ass motherboard like this. It's so sick. This is next level, though, guys. Only are these 20 pins all still the same as will work on this old motherboard, but they still bother to make the four detachable so that you don't have to hang them over the edge. I can actually
plug in natively my motherboard's 20 pin connector just like that on a brand new CIC Prime 1600 W power supply. Oh. Oh, dude. Dude, the whole vision. The whole vision's coming together. Oh man. Sorry. I promised I would focus on working and stop talking about it. Can you get the bit from the drill? Oh yeah, you bet. Thank you. Dock my bit in your screwdriver. Hold up. I mean, what's HR going to do? He doesn't work here. Yeah. What are they going to do? Fire me?
It occurs to me, Alex, that our front panel connectors are somewhat newer generation than our motherboard. I Oh, I forgot about that. Yeah. Uh, hey Reys, want to message Pancratz and see if he can find like a USB 2 internal header to female USB 3 adapter? Sure. Okay. If we're doing vertical mount, we can't do bottom fans. Well, we might not be doing vertical mount. Uh, I just need to plug in these Molex connectors and then we can do a quick test post and see if it even works, which I don't think it's going to.
I present you the fake cup of fiber. Damn, that's really good. Yeah, it's a good job. Yeah, that looks awesome. Proper rice. I want to plug in at least one fan so that we have a visual indicator of if it's powered on. Nothing's going to light up. This is just to see if she posts. Okay. Are you messing with me? No. Oh, hey. It's on. I was starting a concern there. But will we get a display output? Now, we wouldn't leave it running like this for very long, but there's enough metal on our processors that they're not going to like immediately die or anything like
that. Yeah, it's definitely awake. Number lock is cycling, but we're not getting any output. It was worth a shot. At least we got to see it the way that EK envisioned it. We tried. Farewell vertical riser. Oh, I found it. I was like, wait, does this motherboard not have USB 2 headers? Did you find them yet? I see audio. I see FireWire. I'll give you a hint. Look up. Oh, there they are. They're way up here. Holy smokes. Remember when they used to be color coded blue?
Yeah. All right. So, we need this to a USB3 female. Are you just going for it already? Yeah. I'm just going to start sending it. This is too long, but that's fine. And then once we actually have the fittings, we can see how much more we need to trim it. Nice. Wait, does that still say AC on it? Nope. Yeah, I stole my safety glasses. Really? The ones that I use in every single video stolen from here. I need to figure out where to put a hard drive. Did Does this case even have hard drive mounts? Yeah, it does. Does it? Yeah. WHERE? OH, YEAH. Right there where the hard drives go.
Oh, sick. Like with the cage like for a hard drive shape would be for our drive. We went with a 60 billion byte model. Um truly a lot of bites. Okay, bottom fans are in. Oh, no way. Where'd you get that? Somewhere in camera there. What's your plan here? Picking from here. Bend up. Do a 360 and down and in. No sculpt. Yeah. All right. Got to get those extra points in the weird fishing game. I think we have like 15 of these pre-bent 90s or something like that. So, he's got a few shots at it. No, one shot. Movie magic. One shot.
No movie magic. All right, editor, keep all of this in unless I screw it up and then cut it. This is the part where I find out if I wired up the front panel connectors properly. Let's go ahead and give it a shot. Jesus, that's the pump. The pump is powered. Did you plug in the pump? No. Wait, no, it's not the pump. What is that? I have no idea. Well, it even has an alarm like that. Oh, the GPU got unplugged somehow. I remember that being a thing. Dude, GPUs used to really yell at you if you didn't have their exter external power plugged in. Oh, hey, hey, hey. Whoa.
Posting. Dude, that's the best I've ever seen that post screen look. That's OLED, baby. AI series. So ahead of the curve, right? I was fishing around looking for SATA cables so that we could plug in our hard drive and I kind of went, "Oh yeah, uh, we'll be using IDE, which I was just informed we bought this rounded IDE cable." I have probably thrown away over a hundred of these. I hate that I just spent $10 on one, but oh well. Anyway, these were lots of fun. You had to make sure all the jumpers on the back of your drives were set correctly and plug the
right drive into the right head. You could do up to two drives per IDE connector here. Uh, this, I believe, is our primary one. So, I'm going to go into this blue one that's right under the 24 pin. Let's see. Does this line up? Hold on. Let me get this out of your Oh, wow. What are the odds? I think it's going to work. Holy crap. I think you might have nailed it. Yeah. First try for realies. Oh, no. Okay, it goes in. Sick. Have you ever seen such an incredible bend in your life?
Um, no. You know, this build was pretty on the rails until this moment. Yeah, we've we needed a bit of this. Racers are all about too much flare. It's flare. And like this is all class. We need to change that. Now we have class and flare. Yeah, think I've got the back sorted. And I don't know if there's room for many more wires. That's great. Look at that. She's clean. One sliced finger later. I've got another build to add to our chaos that we've got going on here. It makes me regret, you know, this perfect one you put in earlier a little bit, but maybe that's what we want. We want to show that we could have done that.
We just decided not to. Art is something. I was hoping to be profound there for a second. There's one part of the distribution block that we're not really going to be able to use for our build. So, Alex, I'm giving you credit for this idea. Thank you. And by credit, I mean blame. Alex came up with the idea of just filling it with water. So, what color would you guys like? Please vote in the comments. 3 2 1 And you guys chose green. Wow. It's the worst color available, but sure, I guess. There we go. You know what? Yeah, I dig it.
It's greenish. That's green. Okay, what color do we want for the main loop? I'm thinking like a pink, purple, kind of wherever we end up. Very vibrant. Okay, I'll do my best. Uh, is black coolant trendy? Oh, no. It might work. Okay. All right. We're going to see what happens. It also looks pretty horrible from some angles, so I guess we'll see. Okay. So, I'm kind of thinking I go like kind of, you know, like from there to there, you know, like and such with a swirl like such.
Yeah. Crazy straw. Duck penis. Why'd you say that after I put my mouth on it? This is one of those ones that uh needs to be bent a little bit in order to be tightened on. That's fine. But it is tightened on. So, I think we can pressure test. My hopes not the highest. Okay. What are our odds, man? Okay, something's immediately leaking. Oh, it's this one right here that I said was sketch. Holy crap. I think it's holding. That's crazy. See, when you bend the tubies all wacky woodly, the odds of maintaining a good seal and a round end, they do go down. But we're professionals. Wait, we're not done. Where's the racer box? Yeah. Yeah, I almost forgot.
You want to rice it out now? Well, I mean, yeah, right. Okay, it's finally time to show you guys this. My riser box. So, I have acquired a M3 badge from tab.com. Wow. It is it first party? It's definitely made in Germany. Uh, it says in Germany here. Okay. Where does it go? H I don't know. Like, usually that goes into the back, but in the back? I mean, we could do that. Meanwhile, I have another M badge to make it real fast. Holy boys. M power. Hell yeah. Incredible stuff. And now you just need another one in the front.
Oh, yes. Apparently, they're different color. You see? Oh, yeah. Wait, is that one even like is it not even aligned? The stick is aligned. This one is probably from Amazon. It's so much worse than the Tao one. Where do we think the caution this vehicle may produce gaps should go? That should be back. Or maybe here. Oh yes. Yeah. Oh yeah. Like The color really pops. Is that an air freshener? Yeah, we need an air freshener. A little on the nose. You know the hanging air freshener on it build.
It smells all right. Yep. And also I have this uh like red like vent like decoration thingy. I was wondering what those were. They like go on your exhaust. They probably go onto your AC vent. So I guess in this case it goes onto the vent in the back. Oh, okay. Hold on. I got you. Wow. Andy, it's dead center, too. I don't know how you do it. All right, let's fill this thing. Remember, retin fast. Oh we don't have a spoiler. Oh no.
I can't believe we don't have a spoiler. Well, no downforce. Oh dude. You guys say we don't have a spoiler. I made one with cardboard and uh zip tie and duct tape. So there we go. Incredible stuff. There's so much downforce. It's so rise. Okay, for all the memeing though, this is the best I've ever seen Bliss look. It is looking pretty great, dude. How many hertz are you able to get in XP? That's a truly wonderful question that we're about to find out the answer to.
Yeah, those are dual link DVI, so theoretically they should be able to do 2560 x600 60 Hz. So, but maybe just I don't know. Was greater than 60 even supported on these drivers at the time? Oh, wait, hold on. No, no, this isn't a PC resolution. One second. 30. Huh? Hey, we can have a look at our temps, though. No. 23° on the CPU. Uh, hold on. GPU 50. That seems high. But hey, our hard drive is at 27. This is something else, dude.
Have you ever seen something so beautiful in your life? You freaking did it. It's so cool. Can you see the LTT logo on the GPU block nicely? Like if you look from the bottom. Yeah, dude. It's so bad. It's good. Oh my god, that Southbridge heat sink is amazing. It matches the vibe so perfectly. Oh, we should have done Underglow. What were we thinking? I mean, oh, you're so right. V2. Check back in another 14 years and we'll do Riser PC V2 with Underglow. It looks way too good.
It has no right, no right to look this good. It's so slow and yet so good. This would have blown the doors off of what a PS2 could do at the time. Oh yeah, not even a chance. Like you'd have been looking at this going, "Holy shikes, this looks amazing." I think that all the way back here it would like not even be loaded. Oh crud. Uh oh crud. Well, how did that not hit anything? Uh skill issue. Oh, come on. Our 6800 Ultra capped out at 71. Okay, that's fine. So, it's functional even if it's uh maybe not got the best contact.
Yeah, it should definitely not be going over like 40 with this cooling system. No, it really shouldn't. You know what else is functional, even if it's not the best, is this segue to our sponsor, Nexigo. With summer wrapping up, it's time to get around to that fall time movie marathon you've been waiting on. Well, Nexigo is launching their first ever pure RGB laser projector meant to add rich and accurate colors to your favorite flicks on the glooier days. Their Novo mini light projector brings 1080p entertainment anywhere you want. And trust me, you'll want to bring this into that cozy pillow fort. Right now, not only can you get in on that early bird price, but they're knocking off an
extra 50 bucks off the projector for Prime Day. It has its own attached stand, offers Dolby audio out of its 10 watt speakers, and includes a built-in battery for 2 hours of watch time. That's enough juice to watch when Harry met Sally with a whopping 25 minutes to spare. Grab some popcorn, then pre-order the new Nexigo Nova Mini Light during their Prime Day sales for just $4.99.99. That was so much fun. A huge success. Thank you for coming. This was amazing. Guys, get in here, Andy. Guys, don't not check out Zip Tie Tuning and Zip Tie Tech. We're going to have them linked down below. If you live under a rock and you were somehow going, "Oh, I wonder
where those guys went." That's where they went. Thanks again for coming out, you guys. This was amazing. This PC is so sick. If you guys are looking for something else to watch, how about part one? Or just, I don't know, maybe we'll make a fun little playlist of Alex's best hits when he was here. Worst hits? Yeah. Well, it's all subjective.
