30 Second Hotel Safety Check That Could Save Your Life. | Transcript:

Are you worried that your hotel room isn't safe? Well, fellow travelers, I have a 30-se secondond check that you can do in any hotel room, whether it's the Hilton or it's Hans Guest House anywhere in the world. And the first thing it is when you get into your hotel room, you check the door and you check the locks. That means you're making sure the door shuts. And you want to check, does the door shut on its own or do I have to pull it closed? Because a lot of people just assume that those doors will close on their own. And it's not always the case. So, you want to check that. Also, check the locks. Many people feel, "Oh, the door can only be opened with a key. I don't need to use the

supplemental locks." Believe me, it is a lot easier than you think to bust into hotel rooms. Okay? I've had friends who have been robbed during the night and didn't even realize it. I've had friends where their hands snuck in and undid the chain. You really want to make sure you check the locks on there. Check the deadbolt. Check the chain. How far does it open? You know, with a chain, the deadbolt, does it click? If the deadbolt just moves over, well, here's the thing. If it just moves over, that means if they shake the door a lot, it can actually start moving the deadbolt back if it's a cheap deadbolt. So, you want to make sure it turns and locks. Okay?

Also, with the door, check the people. Is it looking outside? And what all can you see right outside with that people? Okay? Cuz sometimes the peoples are just like a hole or somebody might be nefarious and turn it the other direction. So, sometimes maybe you have a little post-it note you put over that people so you don't have to worry about it. Now, the next thing I want you to check if there's an interior door in there that goes to the next room, check that it shuts all the way and it can be locked and that deadbolt is locked. And I want to tell you if there are issues with that interior door or the door to the outside, go and ask the hotel to move you to another room cuz that is

probably the biggest safety things I kind of worry about. Now, the next thing I want you to do, you're going to go to the window or if there's a balcony, you're going to check the windows. Can I open them? Do they open? One, do they open? And if they do, how are they locked closed? And can I lock them closed? You want to check that the balcony doors. Are they balconies that are a sliding door that just has a little clicker down to lock it? You want to make sure you have it locked. Why? Well, you may say, "Well, I'm on the second or third floor. What's the big deal?" You'll be surprised how nefarious people can be. My friends from the Canary Islands on the third floor of their hotel and someone snuck in through

the balcony and robbed them that way. Okay? So, you want to check that. Next thing I want you to do is just scan the room. Look around. How does it look? Because if a room is dirty and not put together, that usually a sign of the hotel might not be caring about cleanliness, but also probably not caring as much about safety. So, you want to see that. So, make sure you go in the bathroom, you check things there. Hopefully, it's just a floater, not a like a b like a booby floater, not like a body floater in the bathtub kind of stuff, but you want to check to make sure that's okay. Also, look under the bed. And I'm telling you, you will not

enjoy what you find underneath your bed sometimes. No, it's not a dead body, but it could be other things there. But it's a good idea to check underneath there cuz that's going to give you an idea of how the room is set up. And after you do that, you might feel kind of comfortable. But another thing I want you to do is go and look on that emergency exit thing. A lot of the hotels will have that emergency exit plan on the door right underneath the peepphole. Look and see your best way out because I'll be honest with you, you might think, "Oh, I'm only on the second floor up. I'll be fine. I'll figure it out." No. Because sometimes those emergency exits, those things are down the hall, around the corner, or if

you're in an old place like here in Europe, it might be a long way down the hall to find that emergency exit and you do not want to be caught out not knowing where to go because the elevators aren't going to be working. And the thing is, you might be in a high-rise hotel in New York and you still need to know. And then a last little thing, if you have a little bit more time, you can check to see if there's a safe and you can test to see if it's working. And don't forget, always set a new passcode for the safe. um wherever you're going to be just to be safe with your stuff. But another thing I think is really important when you're looking at your room safety, trust your gut. If you don't feel comfortable with the people

down the hall, if you don't feel comfortable how the room set up, something feels off. There's an extra light on the uh fire, you know, the fire alarm, um watch our video on hidden cameras. Do those things and maybe ask for another room or sometimes you need to ask for a different hotel cuz sometimes we felt not safe enough in our rooms. We actually have moved hotels. We lost the money, but I'm not going to put myself in an unsafe situation, and I don't want you to put yourself in an unsafe situation. So, please share this video with anybody you know that's going to be traveling solo that you're worried about them and their safety in hotel rooms because this is something that can help them. A quick check like this, just

30 seconds doing these things can make a big difference in your safety. Anyway, I wish you all the best and I'll say bye from here in Leo, France.
