My friends, my name is Luke. This is the Outdoor Gear Review. Thank you very much for tuning in where today we will be talking about this very interesting product that I've been testing out recently. If you're not familiar with the Swagman roll from Helicon Tech, I highly recommend that you check out my review of that product because it is awesome. It's one of those products that is highly adaptable, highly customizable, and you can use it in all sorts of ways. The Swagman roll can be used as a poncho, a poncho liner, a sleeping bag, a blanket, and more. With the Swagman scarf, it can be used in many of the same ways, but it does have a few new tricks up its sleeve. There's
no question about it when it comes to the Swagman roll. It's one of my most favorite outdoor products of all time. So, the question is, how good is the scarf? Well, to be honest, I have more testing to do with this product before I can answer that question. But I can tell you all this is quite interesting. This is so different from the Swagman roll that it's hard to even really compare the two products as you're about to see. As you can see here, when stored, the size of this is impressively small. This stores into its own pocket. You have this strap here that goes around it that holds this thing into place. And from here, we can unpack it.
First things first, I will put this on as a poncho so you all could see what that is like. This was designed to block the wind, not the rain. This is not a wet weather poncho. At the same time, it was designed to hold in just a little bit of heat. Here on the chest, we have a pocket and that's the pocket that this folds up and goes into. In addition, there is a hood which you see here. And I can tell you all folks, today it is way too hot to have that on. In fact, I need to take this off. This is called the Swagman scarf. And they call it that for a reason. The company claims that you can use this as a scarf and you can use it to basically protect your neck and also to hold in some heat when you're wearing
this with a jacket. Additionally, this could be used as a blanket or it can be used as a sleeping bag just like so. Additionally, you can use this as a sleeping bag liner with the hood. You can tuck this in and close it up just like so. One thing that I've been curious about in regards to this is the overall size when in this formation here. It is 31 in wide and it is basically 5'4 in long. With the Swagman scarf, you can find this in numerous colors, including black, coyote brown, a neon orange color, and they also have green. Concerning the materials, this is made from nylon, and when it's stored, it measures 6 in by 7 1/2 in, and it's 2.3 in thick. It is ultra lightweight at 9.3 oz. And when it comes to the retail
price, $53 on the heel contacts website, but you have to pay for shipping. It is $60 on Amazon. And generally, shipping is free. Now, everyone, I'd like to go over the claims made concerning this product in regards to how you can use this, and I'll state whether or not I agree. First, they state that you could wear this as a poncho, and that's true. And second, it blocks the wind. That too is also true. They state that you can wear this around your neck as a scarf, and that's true, but this is incredibly bulky for that purpose. They state that you can put this on as a poncho and then fasten it and wear it as a makeshift jacket. That's true, but it's not a very good jacket. So, that's a stretch right
there. They state that once you're in camp, you can use this as a tarp to block out the sun. In a stretch, yes, that too is true. They claim that once in camp, you can use this as a sleeping bag. That is true. As I stated before, you can also use this as a sleeping bag liner because this zips up. Helilicon text states that you can use this as a gear sack. In other words, you can put a bunch of stuff inside of it to transport. I guess that's true. That is the biggest stretch. That is like a bunch of people sitting around trying to come up ways to market this product. Using this as a gear sack is a real stretch. That's for sure. Hilicon text also states that this is a replacement
for an NRC, which is completely not true. An NRC is a fancy way of saying a myar blanket. This here, everyone, is not a Myar blanket. It does not reflect back heat the same way that Myar does. So, that statement there is completely inaccurate. In no way is this a replacement for a Myar blanket. Not that myar blankets are all that useful. This and a myar blanket are two different products and they should not be compared. With all of that out of the way, let me tell you all about the testing that I've done already with this product here. So, recently I went out on a backpacking trip, a wet weather backpacking trip where the temps got down to 59°. At 59° I was using this as a sleeping bag. At 59°, using this as a sleeping
bag, I was chilly. I had socks on, pants, underwear, obviously, a t-shirt, and a fleece, and I was chilly while using this. This is without a doubt a very warm weather sleeping bag if you're going to use it for that purpose. And I'm thinking 65° Fahrenheit and up. And if you're cold naturatured, it might need to be 70° and up. This is a non-insulating product, meaning this is not going to insulate you from the cold at all. What it does do is this. It blocks the wind, right? So, you're not going to feel it when you're inside of this partially inside of this. This is again only 5' 4 in long when used as a sleeping bag. And at the same time, it's going to hold in just a little bit of
heat, making this useful in warm weather conditions only when talking about using this as a sleeping bag. This is without a doubt ultra light and at the same time, it can be very, very compact when stored. Without a doubt, this is a product that is quick to deploy and quick to put up. It is wellmade. The construction is good. There are a few loose threads here and there, but seriously, they're no big deal. Overall, the construction here is good, especially when you consider the price of this. Speaking of which, the price is not bad at all. For a wind poncho, for an ultra light warm weather sleeping bag, sleeping bag liner, the price is not bad. My biggest complaint for this is that it's not very long. If you're
going to use this as a sleeping bag, what I find the most interesting about this product is what it was designed for. More than anything, this was designed to be a poncho that blocks the wind. And I have a question for you all. Is that something that is truly needed or something that is wanted by you? What situation do you see yourself being in where you would want something like this? Now, of course, I have a lot of testing to do with this product, and something that I want to test out is going to have to wait until later on this year once snow begins to fly. I am interested in testing this out as a poncho, not only in the wind, but also in the cold and in the snow. I could see
wearing this when it's windy and a dry snow is falling. Obviously, with this not being waterproof, you wouldn't want to use this in a wet snow, but in a dry snow, I can see a use case being there. Just in case you're not all that familiar with snow, the terms dry snow and wet snow, that could be confusing. To put it simply, there's different levels of moisture that is inside of each snowflake. When there's a lot of water content in a snowflake, it's considered to be a wet snow. When there's very little moisture, that's considered to be a dry snow. Let me put it this way. When you go to make a snowball and the snow doesn't stay together, that's a dry snow. But when it
does clump together really, really well, there's a lot of moisture in it. And that's a wet snow. Anyways, my friends, as a sleeping bag, again, it really doesn't work, right? Because you have to use it in extremely warm conditions, 65, maybe even 70 and above. As a blanket, again, it has to be very, very warm for this to make sense. Using this as a scarf, well, that is completely up to you. Does it work? Yes. Is that a stretch? I think so. What do you think? comment down below. I certainly can't say that I dislike this product because it's very interesting. It's wellmade. It does serve a purpose, but the purposes in which you are going to use this are going to be limited. So, let me ask you,
how would you use this product and what are your thoughts? For now, I have more testing to do and in the future, I will be back with my full review. Again, everyone, I'm really interested in hearing your thoughts on how you would use a product like this. Do you have a use case that makes sense? Comment down below and share. I love the fact that Helilicon Tech is thinking outside of the box and they developed a very specific use case product. There's nothing wrong with having products that are designed for very specific situations and needs. And that's why I don't appreciate them grabbing at straws to come up with ways to market this product because it doesn't need it,
right? This product does what it does. It's not a gear sack. And at the same time, this is not a replacement for a Myar blanket. This is a poncho designed to block out the wind. And that's basically the only thing that it's going to be used for outside of some very unique situations. And those, my friends, are my thoughts as of right now. Again, I will do more testing with this, and I will be back later on this year with my final review. Again, sound off in the comment section down below. What do you all think about the Swagman scarf? The Swagman roll is an awesome product, as I mentioned before. And with this here, it has yet to win me over.
I've yet to come across the situation where this is truly needed, but maybe that situation will present itself in the future. For now everyone, I am done. Before you go, please hit the thumbs up. I do appreciate it. Until next time, take care. Be well. Strength and honor. Bye for now. Heat.
