Alligator and Crocodile Bite Force Tested with Melons at Wildlife Sanctuary

A test at Bellowing Acres Wildlife Sanctuary explores the crushing bite force of alligators and crocodiles. Using melons attached to a stick, the team demonstrates the raw power of these predators' jaws, answering whether an alligator could crush a human head.

I've always been curious as to whether or not an alligator could crush your head. I have a feeling that the answer is yes. Today we're at Bellowing Acres Wildlife Sanctuary. This is Chris. Chris is holding a watermelon. This is Ray. He's holding a cantaloupe. And I've got the melon stick. What we're going to do is put melons on the end of this stick and then put them into the jaws of alligators and crocodiles so that we can show you guys just how powerful and crushing that

bite force truly is. Oh, that was an interesting sound. That was a fun sound. Okay, so Chris and Ray are going to be the ones going in to actually make the chomp happen. Are you nervous? A little nervous. My heart is racing at the moment. I. the stick is not very long when you're standing next to a gator of that size, but here we go. Here goes nothing. How do you think the melon feels? All right, I'll call him and get him to stand up again for you. Gotcha. Big Mac. Wow. Okay, here we go. Cantaloupe bite test. Ooh, what a jump. Holy

cow. Wow. Big Mac chowing down. That was next to no effort for Big Mac to be able to chomp into that cantaloupe. Now we want to take a cantaloupe and see what happens when we put it into the mouth of a crocodile. And jealous. Interesting. If he's feeling a little feisty, he will definitely snatch that and crush it. Okay. Not to eat it, but to kill it. Okay. So, I might have to be the one to give it to him. if you want to go that route 'cause you might be a little sketch. It's all about uh just getting the crush shot. So, wow, that was a quick strike.

Oh. A bite and a retreat to the water. Interesting. But Chris, this is something that they would do in the wild, right? drag a prey item from on land into the water to potentially drown it. Right. Yes. And then he has been known to drop his food and just randomly attack the person. You hear that, Coyote? I do hear that. So I have this uh action cam on an extendable pole. We expected something a lot more violent. Now we're on to the honeydew. Oh, your melon lolli, my friend. Thank you, kind sir. Now, he's already eaten a cantaloupe. We have no idea what he's going to do with the honeydew. Big Mac. Okay,

here we go. 3 2 1 to the side. Ooh. Oh my god, that pop. [snorts] Absolutely no problem cracking it open. I think he's kind of like, what do we have here? So, they are 99.9% carnivore, but they are known to occasionally eat plant matter willingly. Here you go. He liked that cantaloupe. He doesn't seem like he likes the honeydew. Well, you think we should get it out of his mouth? I think it might be interesting. Let me see. Big Mac. Ooh, another crunch. Wow. Maybe he is completed. That is Maybe he wants to make sure that it's dead. What a sound. Look at my stick. Yeah, you can tell that he really doesn't want to let go of it. Yeah,

I don't think he really wants it, but he doesn't want us to have it. Okay, so I think the next step is to take watermelons and see how those explode. Okay, we've got a watermelon. Great start. It's a little slippery. Now, we're going to use a slightly longer stick for this experiment because bigger alligator, more dangerous of a situation. I guess somebody shook this watermelon up. Hey, buddy. Wow. Let me just stand right next to you. Yep. In case, yeah. Okay. You guys ready for this? Got good shots? Yep. Okay, here we go. Big gator bite test.

No way. Should we try his blind side? Dino. He's got his eyes shut. I mean, not what? Look at that. Ooh. You see that? Yeah. Right there. Wow. She's creeping. Okay. She ain't playing. Come around here. Here we go. You can't see at all. Make it. Oh, that gave me a little jolt. Yeah. Rub it up on his Yeah. And Oh, what a pop. Holy cow. Yep. Yep. Keep rubbing it and you can just stick it in there when it's open enough. Oh, wow. loaded it. Okay. I mean, I barely have a grip of the stick anymore, but holy cow, that pop. I That was really cool. And I think my heart skipped a beat when it gave

that huge pop. Wow. My heart is racing at the moment. What a display of just raw bite power. I got to tell you, you get your hand, your leg, or your head close to an alligator like that, you ain't going to get it back. Okay, we've got our last watermelon of the day. Let's make it a good one. We're ending where we started with Big Mac. Oh. Oh, you cracked the side of it. Ooh. Well, Big Mac's probably going to crack it even more. So, same thing. I'll stand him up for you, Big Mac. Okay, here we go. Three, two, one. Oh, wa. What an explosion. Imagine if that was your head. I don't want to. That's terrifying. Big Mac, you

crushed that watermelon. So good, right? Mhm. Yeah, let me get a little bit of that. That looks fresh. Fresh out the gator. I mean, what's better than having watermelon cut through you by an alligator? Whoa. Big Mac, you are a messy eater. Oh my god. Big Mac. Wow. Well, that's the end of that watermelon's life. What can we tell you? Wow. Okay. What have we learned? Something we probably already knew. The crocodiles and alligators have incredible bite forces. Crocodiles seem to be very selective and

almost more reclusive. Didn't really want to put their full bite on display. Gators here are kind of meant for the cameras and just want to chomp down on things. Well, I will definitely say these gators did not disappoint. Big thanks to Chris and the team here at Bellowing Acres for letting us get behind the scenes to test out the power of a melon against the crushing force of a crocodilian. I'm Coyote Peterson. I'm Ray Tiller. Be brave. Stay wild. We'll see you on the next adventure. Oh boy. Bellowing Acres provides a forever home to rescued nuisance

gators that were destined for euthanasia by the state. And rehabilitated alligators cannot legally be re-released. In addition to the beautiful crocodilians you saw in this episode, the sanctuary also has over 250 animals that call this refuge a saving residence. Bellowing Acres is a nonprofit and if you have an interest in supporting this wonderful cause, make sure to visit their website to learn how you can help make a difference. All right, so what do you weigh again? 165. All right, so we'll just do the same. Wow. Oh, dude. It's the

light work. I am basically an alligator. You're a lighter. Bite his hand, though.
