a check on your forecast and John Elliot is live for us in Verona. He's uh there for the Valerie Fund walk. He's got your First Alert forecast. Such an important event uh and such a great cause. John, so this is crazy. I love live TV and I have not one but two weather watchers. I've got Dana Gala, one of the OG weather watchers, and then I've got Vanessa Murdoch. Thanks for calling. So, how many years have you been MC here? Oh, that's a good question. It's been at least a decade. Yes, about a So, it's the 21st Valerie Fun Walk. How many years have you been coming here?
15 years. Longer than me. Wow. I got to tell you. All right. So, we've got lots to talk about, lots of friends to meet, but guess what today is, Vanessa? Today is the 50th anniversary of the Valor Fund. Is that what you wanted to It's also a First Alert Weather Day. So, it is a First Alert weather day. And here's why. These afternoon storms, and this is going to impact you very well. So, we got these isolated strong storms. Now, the temperatures feel great. Does it feel good out here? Wonderful. Look at these numbers around the area.
Numbers very comfortable right now, but they're on the way up. We're 78 in the city. It's probably about 77 here in probably a little warmer out here in Verona. These numbers compared to yesterday, they're up. Due points are up. So, you've got all the ingredients you need for an isolated shower or storm in our full forecast. We're going to time it out. You can see it's quiet right now. I mean, it's beautiful right now. That's what Vanessa is going to deal with later today. 5:00 and on, right? So, we're going to be doing streaming uh cutins later today. But, you know what? We just want to have some fun with the Valerie Fund. This is an amazing group and the goal is a million dollar. I think we're going to be able to do it.
I am convinced the numbers already over 970. Okay, good. So, there you go. All we need is like $30,000 more. It's It's a sure bet. Vince will do that. Um, so we've got a lot more coming up from Verona in a bit. Right now though, we're going to send things back to you guys in the studio. Okay. Good to see Vanessa. Hi, Vanessa. Uh, John, good morning. Hey, good morning everybody. So, um, uh, this is what I love about the Valerie Fund. Met Tina about a minute and a half ago. Uh, uh, Christina was in the studio
with Blakeley, uh, earlier in the week. Um, uh, we are here about saving lives and changing lives and helping kids. And then you know uh you're with you're a team. You have a team. Yes. Team Trey Strong. And where is Trey right now? Trey is receiving treatment right now at CHOP. Because isn't that what the reality is? You are dealing with a child who's in the battle for their life. Yes. Leukemia. What is the prognosis? He's going to do he's he's in his last treatment and he's showing no leukemia right now in his blood. So it's it's absolutely fantastic.
How important is the Valerie fund for you? Oh, it was so important. We heard that um the reason we're here today is because they helped Trey so much along this whole journey with gift cards and support. Anything that Trey needed, the Valerie son was right there. So, we're so happy to walk for them today. And it's a family, too. Who's here? Yes. This is my son Joey. This is Trey's cousin. I am an 11year-old child. Yes. And this is uh Trey's other cousin, Christopher. We all live in Verona here. How many in the on the team?
16. 16 on the team. So, now you stay and listen to this because we've got Christina here. So Christina is with Blakeley. What is Blakeley battling and what's the prognosis? Yes, she is battling T- cell lymphoplastic lymphoma and she is doing amazing. We had just hit the maintenance phase. So we have one year left of maintenance but she is doing incredible. I mean I hate this that you guys understand this you know what everybody's going through right it's a language we never wanted to know.
How important has the Valerie fund been for you? Incredible. It's been our home away from home. anything that we've needed. The love, the support from everybody there has absolutely changed our lives and got us through the last year. Well, you guys were so sweet because you were in talking to my friend Chris Raggy. And Chris is a pretty scary guy, isn't he? But you look lovely. I love this. Also, I love what the green shirt means, too. A green shirt means this is a warrior who's fighting. So, I just want you guys Don't move. Jane, come here. So, Jane, tell me your story. Tell me your success story.
Okay. My son was diagnosed in 1992. He had cancer of liver and both lungs at 19 months and he was treated by the Valerie Fund. And the Valerie Fund is the most amazing organization that you're ever going to find. Not only do they support the child, they support the family, they support the ch the other siblings, grandparents, they do everything for all of us. And see this is what I did. You hear that? Success story. Week he just turned 36. So liver both lungs at 19 months in 1992. So to hear it. Yeah. It's like the best kind of organ recital. I love this.
God bless you. Thank you. It's good seeing you again. Thanks for stopping by, Jane. And uh all my best. All the best. This is just great. Okay, now don't go away too yet because I'm going to show you the weather cuz we can do that here. We're up against the possibility of some storms later. So, the good news is uh it's not going to be till later today. Most of the weekend's going to be dry, but it's tonight between 5 and 11. Severe thunderstorm risk. I know, I know. We'll show you the futurecast in a second. Sunday is looking much better. Right now, we're okay upstate. I know the Belmont is up in Saratoga Springs. That is going to be more of an issue for them. Also mindful of the
possibility of an interruption for the Yankees game, too. So, you know how this works. There's the time stamp on top of the TV screen. You see a relatively benign day. It's just hot and humid until it boom starts to storm. 5:00. This is where we see these storms holding together, pushing through. Isolated severe storm with the possibility of 60 mph winds. Hail is going to be an issue with these storms, too. They push through, though. Watch out. Twin Forks, Riverhead Points East, and Ocean County late. And then for your Sunday, we're in much better shape. We'll leave in the chance of a stray shower Sunday, but the 7-day details, you can see uh you're in much better shape. Sunday, there's less humidity,
just an isolated shower Monday and Tuesday look great. And maybe there'll be some big news other than the weather on Wednesday. We'll be watching that as well. Hey, uh don't know exactly what's going to happen next, and that's what we love about it. Uh I think 2,000 here today. So, we've got a lot more coming up from Verona, but right now we'll send it back to you guys in the studio. Thank you so much. How about this young man, 11year-old child? Yep. Just on he's on the record. Um, and that was fantastic stuff. And by the way, if you want to be amongst the 2,000 or so people going this morning, please join us at the Valor Fund walk and 5K
run in Verona. You can also help the cause if you can't make it just by donating and we have a link to do that on our website cbsnew york.com. Let's get a check on your forecast. John Elliott bringing those to us this morning from Verona, New Jersey for the Valerie Fund 5K walk. Uh, and it's just such an important organization and such an important morning. Uh, John, THEY'RE ALL EXCITED CUZ YOU'RE ALL ON TV RIGHT NOW. YEAH. COME ON IN, VINCE. I want to introduce you to Jax and Carrie, right? Chatter. Correct. Um, uh, so a patient with the Valerie Fund. Uh, how you feeling right now? Uh pretty well. I've been undergoing chemo for the past two and a half months. Um a lot of the people there are very nice and um I'm handling the chemo like a
little nauseous and like pretty tired and but so far I'm feeling really great now. How brave is Jax? Unbelievable. His whole mental state has been so positive and he's been so strong which has helped us be strong for him. So couldn't ask for anything better. What kind of cancer? He has embroal rabdtomyio myio saroma um which is a soft tissue um cancer. How sick are you that you have to know the names of these cancers and all this stuff? We learned a lot of big words. How important is the Valerie fund been? It's been incredible. I mean it was so scary the first meeting that we had with the doctors, but the Valerie Fund team was there with us and they were so
supportive. We felt like family from the moment um we walked through the door. So, it's been unbelievable all the support that we've gotten um from like meditation to art therapy to um support groups. We couldn't ask for anything better and we're so happy to be here and support the Valerie Fund in a way to give back. What's your favorite kind of music? Uh punk rock. That's what the dad tones are. So, it's all about teams. So, um we're going to change our tune weatherwise. Do you see what I did there? Uh want to make sure you're ready for it. Tonight we're dealing with the possibility of some
storms. You can see on the radar and satellite it's way to the north and west. But with First Alert weather kicks in around 5 north and west with those storms. We're going to track and we'll have the rest of your 7-day forecast coming up. But I am so inspired. And she didn't think she was going to be on live TV. It's the dot tones. Look it right there. You're on live TV. Yay. All right. Uh a lot more coming up from Verona right now though. We'll send it back to you guys in the studio. And she's so comfortable on TV. She was waving at us from the beginning. So, sending our love back to hot, sunny, and nice until it isn't. And uh John this morning in Verona, New Jersey, uh he's
got some guests at the Valerie Fund. Well, and the other thing, too, is that much of the weekend's going to be great. It's just tonight. We'll go through the futurecast in a second, but I love this. I have Aaron Newton. So, they um uh green shirt means you have cancer or you've beat cancer. What kind of cancer did you I had a neuroblastoma tumor in my abdomen. How old were you? I when I was 2 years old. What' they do? They performed surgery. They got it out early so I didn't have to go through chemo or radiation or anything.
Do you remember anything? I don't remember anything at all. You just are a kid that had cancer and you do not have cancer anymore. Yeah. And how important was the Valerie Fund for you and the family? Oh, it was great. They helped fund us, helped us get through the whole thing, helped my parents deal with it. So, we're here to support them today. And so I'm going to get in trouble now because I don't know if I'm supposed to do this or not. Your dad, Scott, is an editor with CBS. This guy right here. Come on in, shy guy. So I mean, and I met you obviously at work, CBS WCBS. But then also, I saw you here and I
said, "What's the deal?" And it was for him. But now look at this giant son that you have. How proud are you of your son? I mean, when you There's no words for how proud we are. Um, but also the fact that he wants to continue to come here and be a part of this and just spread the word of what the Valerie Fund does. I mean, we're just blessed and we're lucky. So, and how important was the Valerie Fund? Um, you know, we just fell into their lap and I mean, the support we had, the doctors, I mean, I there's no words to describe how we just got super lucky.
They're incredible. One of the best organizations around and what they do for these families and for these kids are just incredible. And it is, it's about family. They helped siblings too, right, Mom? Oh, absolutely. I Well, I was pregnant with her. I was pregnant with a little sister at the time. And just as a group, they were so good to us knowing he was going through that. We were helping, you know, him and everything that she needed in here needed to be safe in nature. I was fed and comfortable and warm and everybody had what they needed. I think that's what people miss that, you know, you hear the diagnosis cancer and you think, what does it mean? But it
means so much for everybody. Boy, cuz I couldn't remember I must have met him. He's like this, man. Oh, man. Keep it up, dude. Uh, thanks you guys. Appreciate it. Um, all right. So, let's talk about Let's time out those storms for you. So, um, we've got the heat, we've got the humidity, area highs today, with the exception of Southshore going to be hot. Southshore, please remember red flags. You've got these dangerous rip currents that you're facing out on the island. Moderate rip current risk for the Jersey Shore. Right now it's quiet. Clouds are filling in.
Expand the view. You see the storms to the north and west. Let's time it out for you. This is a complex system. All the ingredients are there for these strong to potentially severe storms. National Weather Service putting it yeah greater risk north and west initially, but even in the city. The concern is going to be these congested corridors. When this if this verifies, you're going to see the potential for localized flooding. Hail is going to be an issue. Wind is going to be an issue. I think one of the greatest impacts might be flooding though as far as impacting your ability to get around. So these are the critical hours. You can see it right
there. It's basically between 5 and maybe 10 where most of the area has most of the headaches. And then the good news is I mean we're going to wrap it up and you're going to see much better weather for your Sunday, much better weather for your Monday. looks dynamite. Monday and Tuesday should be comfortable. Uh please be careful. I mean we are concerned about the wind, the hail, heavy rain though, localized heavy rain could be an issue. Vortex or rotation minimal. Vanessa is going to be having doing updates this afternoon starting at 5 when they roll in. Uh we're going to keep rolling here in Verona. I mean look at this crowd. It's just amazing the turnout. This is a big crowd and
shooting for a million bucks. We'll have an update on that a little later too. right now though, we'll send it back to you guys in the studio. Thank you, John. And you can add to that turnout by joining this morning at the Valerie Fund 5K walk and run in Verona, New Jersey. You can also just help by donating. We have a link to do so on our website, cbsnew york.com. At the Valerie Fund Walk in Verona, New Jersey, uh you'll learn a little bit about this event, what the Valerie Fund does, the important work, and the people that John Elliot's interviewing, and what the green shirts mean. John
I'm glad you brought up green shirts, Doug. Uh, green shirt means you're a survivor, means a fighter, and you think, well, we're here raising money for kids with cancer, but it's also kids with blood disease. David, what kind of disease did you have, or should I say, do you have? Um, I had a plastic anemia, rare blood disorder. Um, so basically, my bone marrow was failing to produce enough healthy new cells. Um, and thankfully, uh, I had a bone marrow transplant. And guess who donated the bone marrow? Was your older sister, right? Yeah, it was, um, my oldest sister, Francesca, uh, who I'm very close with and uh, you better be, Mom.
She can't be here today, but she's she's here in How important is the Valerie Fund to your family? It's uh, it's been amazing. We had such a if you could say a wonderful experience with you know considering the situation everyone was wonderful. Um we actually got transferred for to another hospital because but you had to get the right kind of care because he needed a um a transplant and we actually we cried because we loved everybody. Um when we go back uh he's a shared patient now. Um it was like being back with family. Well, I'm so impressed. By the way, the odds of this disease, two in one million and you're a survivor. All right. Uh don't go away. I want to show you cuz she's my weather watcher. She fell to drop. Um are there
any drops out there? First off, it's hot. It's humid. We are ready to serve up the heat already. We're probably 84 out here in Verona. It's 81 in the city right now. Look at Ocean County is at 86. Where is the rain again? I mean, you could see a brief shower. had one through Orange County. Expand the view and you can see the organized front is well to the north and west. Please remember late afternoon possibility of severe storms. We're going to time out that and have the rest of your 7day coming up in a bit. But uh right now uh let's get inspired. This is just amazing and they just started a band for some reason. We'll have more from the Valerie Fun Walk in Verona right now though.
Right back to you guys in the studio. Okay. Hopefully that rain holds off for the walk so everyone can enjoy such a great turnout there in Verona. Yes, John. Thank you to if there's still time. Uh he's got your first alert forecast as well. John Logan, look at you're on TV right now. Guess who I just found? Logan's Heroes. And this is Logan. How old are you, Logan? A nine. How much do you love all your friends?
A lot. And so green shirt means that Logan's fighting a disease. What does Logan have? Logan has a blood disorder called ITP. What is ITP? ITP is when your body attacks your platelets. So he has really low So how do you treat that? Uh different medications. So he's on a combination of a few things right now. How's Logan doing? Uh regardless of everything that he's going through, he's doing phenomenal. He's a good strong boy. So, Dad, how proud are you of Logan?
I can't even tell you how proud I am of him. He's playing baseball, running track, getting medals in track, and I can't tell you how proud I am of him. Who's this, by the way? This is Adeline. Say hi. You are so cute. Logan. Hey, Logan. Guess what your dad just said? He said he's very proud of you. Some kid is watching TV right now and just got bad news about their health. What would you say to a kid to encourage him if he's fighting a disease? Hope you feel better. A is this a good kid or what? Well, we interrupted whatever they were doing. So, thanks. Have a good walk and thank you.
Wow, that's great. Uh, so here's what they're doing is they have all the teams here. Hey, that's the Newton. We just saw them. So, as the teams come up, they have their uh and it's it's all a big fundraiser. So, some of these teams raising thousands of dollars as they fill in and the green shirts mean it's a kid fighting cancer or a blood disorder or disease. And that's why the numbers are so big and the numbers are so encouraging. All right, I'm going to try to Yeah, I love that. Look at the big tall guy there. Um want to encourage you to uh enjoy the day while you can. Let's time out those storms, though. show you the numbers and what we're up against.
National Weather Service alerting us that uh much of our area under the slight risk of a severe storm. So, you think, well, you know, it's like we're trying to make it out like it isn't a big deal. There's not that much coverage, but when these things hit, they're going to be significant. We're talking about heavy rain. We're talking about winds that could approach or exceed 60 mph. Hail is going to be an issue. Right now, there's not a lot of rotation anticipated with these storms. I counted like six drops here in Verona. So, we're waiting. But for the Belmont Stakes, they're going to have some issues. And if you're going to the Yankees game, too. The timing is going to be crucial. So, that's what we're
here for. Let's time this out for you. Uh you can see your much of the area, it's just hazy sun, the heat and humidity. But then watch what happens as we get into the 5 to 7:00 hour. That's where you're going to see a lot more coverage. And if that verifies down through uh Putnham into Westchester, I mean, that's going to be a challenging storm. I would say please factor the forecast into your afternoon plans. There might be a period this afternoon and early tonight where you're just going to want to hunker down, stay in place. These will pass. Our concern is going to be the potential for wind damage and then also some localized
flooding, too. So, we got a late storm risk of 91. And then tomorrow, big turnaround. We'll see you in Queens tomorrow, trending drier. And then for your uh Monday, Monday looks really good. And 7-day details. We've got more heat coming in by the end of next week. So, I mean, we're just going to try to, you know, for as much time as we have, we'll share some more stories here. But this is Oh, thank you. Thank you guys. Thanks you guys. Thanks everybody. You're on live TV right now. Can you believe it? Can you believe you're on? So, uh, that's what it's all about.
Valerie Fun, as they continue to walk, we'll continue to tell their stories right now that we'll send it back to you guys in the studio. John makes live TV feel like the best thing ever. He really does. I'm giggling every time he says it. I know some people are so amazed at the possibility and some people are like, "Hi, yeah, I'm I'm a pro at this." You meet what it all means. Uh, and also, it is a First Alert weather day as we just showed on the screen. John. But you know what, Doug? It's interesting. And Aziza, too. You talk about like not being able to remember this or that or we're celebrating the
Knicks and it's been so many years. I'm fascinated by the years that Willow has been fighting cancer. How old were you when you were diagnosed with It was leukemia, right? Yes. I was 11 years old when I was first diagnosed with leukemia, halfway into sixth grade. And uh everything changed after that. But then it wasn't just leukemia, then cancer. Yes. I had the leukemia when I was 11 and then I had an ovarian tumor when I was 18. So I'm a two-time cancer survivor thanks to the Valerie Fund.
They're the reason I'm still here today. You know what I love about that story? Uh what's next? You're getting a PhD, right? I am applying to PhD and Sid programs right now. I'm hoping to get uh a doctorate in clinical psychology so I can be a therapist. Right now, I work with kids with autism at a company called Positive Development. So, I'm hoping to further that education so I can continue to support them as well as maybe support uh kids with cancer as well in the therapeutic setting. You know, you're a role model, don't you?
I'm just me. Well, God bless you. Anyway, it's good to see you again. I love that. Thank you. Thank you, Will. I love that. Uh okay, so let's talk about uh the rest of your day weatherwise. Doug's right. It is a First Alert weather day because of the storms coming in later today. Uh, our concern is going to be wind is going to be an issue, hail is going to be an issue, ponding is going to be an issue, and the timing is not going to be our friend because it's 5 to 11. So again, I know you got so much fun stuff you want to do. Remember, this afternoon and early tonight, even in the city, we'll do the futurecast again in our full forecast. Good news is it is going to break the air quality. It is going to
break the humidity and serve up a better Sunday, but we are concerned about your safety later today. So, we're going to uh talk about it and then coming up in our full forecast for forecast, it's all about teams. We're going to introduce you to team Vivian. Did I say it right? Vivian. Yep. All right. So, we're going to tell Vivian's story and why these teams are so important and how close are we to $1 million. Right now though, we'll send it right back to you guys in the studio. All right, John, thanks so much. We're going to check back in with John Elliot in just a few minutes. And to always get the first alert on any weather, any storm from our weather team, you can download the free CBS News app. The
weather, he's in Verona, New Jersey. John, I know it's loud where you are. Not sure if you've heard what's happening here in studio. We're having fun. You're having fun at the Valer Fund and also telling such important and powerful stories where you are. Well, that's why I like our Saturday show. You never know what you're going to get on our Saturday show. And you get to meet so many great friends LIKE TEAM VIVIAN. AND NOW WE want you to wrap it. No. Um, uh, Vivian, uh, I'm so impressed with you. You were how old when you were diagnosed with leukemia? I was 11. Did you ever in any wild in wildest imagination know that you would know as much about leukemia as you know right now?
No, I don't think I would have ever known as much as I do now. I am so impressed, Mom, talking to her. I got to tell you, what's it like though when the mom and the dad get the diagnosis that their daughter has blood cancer? Heartbreaking. It's absolutely heartbreaking. It's something I never would wish upon anybody. But look at how this team has come together. How many people in team Vivian? Yeah, we got over 40 people, friends, classmates, other people who have been cancer patient, family members. Here they are showing up and uh they raised a lot of money for the Valerie Center which does a great job for my daughter
and many young men, young boys and girls out there. How has the Valerie Center helped you? Um it's helped us through a lot of tough times. They've been really supportive. It's like a home away from home. They always make sure we have everything we need. They And then here's Hudson. How has the Valerie Center helped you in Hudson? Oh, they've been amazing. They've helped us socially. They've helped Hudson find resources. Resources for ourselves. They supported us in every way. They're never more than a phone call away. And Hudson gets everything he needs.
Okay. And watch everybody cuz you leukemia, blood cancer. Look at this. Is Michael. Michael, where are you going to school this fall? Syracuse University. How old were you when you were diagnosed with leukemia? Two and a half. How you feeling now? Great. I'm over 15 years in remission. The Valerie Fund helped me and a lot of other kids, so I can't thank them enough. See, there you go. It's going to be successful.
I love it. Okay, so let's dive right into the uh weather cuz the brother has a baseball game. So, let's dive right in. First off, come on over here. We'll watch this. So, rib current risk high for the south facing beaches of Long Island. Moderate for the Jersey Shore. Make sure you're ready for that. We also have bad pollen. And we have an air quality alert, too. So, the pollen's way up there. Storms will help with that. Air quality alert 11 to 11 as storms are going to help with that. But watch the timing of these storms. Right now you're fine, but as you expand the radar view, this is what's coming. So come on in real close. So here's the deal. If you
look at the futurecast, we're fine through the middle part of the day, but this afternoon game is at 6:00, right? Yeah. So watch this. So you might be able to get the game in, but right there it's going to be a close call. Our concern, isolated strong to severe storms, so you may not have to play the game tonight or get to play the game tonight. Once that clears out though, you're going to be in much better shape for your 7-day uh 7-day details. You can see it's much better for your Sunday into Monday. Guess what? We're almost at a million dollars for the Valerie fund. And do they need it?
This has been so great. Uh thanks for going along for the ride. All the best. Congratulations, dude. I met him when he was that big and now look at him. Thanks, everybody. live in Verona develop. Thanks to you guys in the studio. Y great energy out there as well. Absolutely. Uh John, thank you and thank uh you all for being there this morning because uh it's such powerful work and those in the green shirts were thinking of you, praying for you and um thanks for your uh participation in our coverage.
