The Real Cost of Finishing a Tiny House in Extreme Texas Heat

Building a tiny house in the extreme Texas heat presents unexpected financial and physical challenges. The process involves installing air conditioning, insulation, and plumbing, with costs adding up quickly. The video explores the real expenses and difficulties of completing this DIY project.

Can We Afford to Finish This House?? What It’s REALLY Costing Us. | Transcript:

And welcome back to building the tiny house from hell. It never ends. So, you know, we're trying to build this in the middle of the hellish Texas heat, and it's just killing us. Real hell. It was so hot. We tried to install air conditioning as soon as possible, but it is impossible to do without insulation. And you can't insulate until you've installed the communications inside the walls. So in our last series we dealt with plumbing. It was terrifying, but I think everything should work out. We have n't had time to check it yet. This was my least favorite project, in case you didn't know.

She.She must have mentioned it once or twice. This project is probably my least favorite at the moment. This is probably the worst thing we've ever done. This project is officially, I think, my least favorite of all the ones we've done. But we also mentioned that we needed to run 200 amp electricity to the cabin. This means digging a 200- foot trench from the hut to the electric pole. And then we need to bury the cable. But we didn't really want to do it ourselves because it sounds like a hell of a lot of work. And I know absolutely nothing about how to dig trenches and bury high-voltage cable. So we reached out to local electrical contractors to see if

they could do it. And how much will it cost? And, uh, I just got, uh, a price. via email Yes, I got it. Oh my God. Do you have any? Yes, I have. I sent it to you. Me? Yes. Look with one eye. Are you kidding? This costs more than installing an entire kitchen. The options were, as we thought: 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, 11,000. If you guessed any of these, you were wrong. They value it at $13,000. God, guys, everything in this house is getting so expensive. We received many more offers. We will have to discuss them with you a little later. But I honestly don't know how we're going to pay for all this. Like, what is the

current market rate for donating blood and plasma? Looks like we'll have to do it the old fashioned way. So, uh, hold on, man. 24 inches deep. So, how is it? Yes, that would probably help a little too. Oh, that's it. Now I'm ready for this. It'll take me, well, a few hours, I think. Okay, let's start. Well, that sucks. There's no way we're going to dig 200 feet with this stupid shovel. There has to be a better way, right?

Oh, there's a better way. And I have exactly what I need. Ugh. Rate this. We caught this handsome guy in the city. This is the Ditch Witch RT20. The catch is that the blade is about 4 inches wide. So, he digs a perfect trench 4 inches wide and has to go 24 inches deep, which is exactly how deep the cable needs to be laid. So, it was the digging of the trench and laying of the cable that made up the majority of the price. I think it was around $10,000 or $9,000. But we can save most of it by doing everything ourselves. We also took a large coil of thick cable designed for laying in the ground. We will dig this trench. We'll put the cable in it and just leave the ends. And then the electricians will arrive and connect everything. Today

we need to be careful because there are still active lines here. This is the original shield that was in the house. Here it is-the original underground cables that went to the tiny house. It only gives 100 amps. So they will have to be removed. These are the original cables of the house that have been cut, but this one is the most important. It goes all the way to our pump room. So, this is a line that we definitely shouldn't cross. We even dug a few holes to find out exactly where it runs. Now we know they're going straight to the pumping station over there. This means that we want to draw our line right here. So we need to dig a hole here and make sure we do n't touch anything. But before we do that, we have to double-check

that there is no voltage in those lines. Can you imagine that? The trencher is cutting into the line, so we have to turn it off. Disable forever. Goodbye, energy for a tiny house It wasn't epic at all Oh, yes. It was from " Dark City". This is a really good movie. Aha. Well, let's go dig trenches. Well, slowly but surely we are moving forward. We've already gone about 40 feet. This took over an hour. So it's going a little slow.

Very slowly. And this thing doesn't take stones. We came across a few, had to drive out and go around them. Yes. So I don't know what we're going to do. There are still root systems there that we came across. We'll come across them again, and she won't cut them at all. This caterpillar, uh, is slipping through. So this wheel actually has no power. The other wheel pulls everything along. This means that the car is going crooked, I have to fix it, then again, then fix it, and again. I'm glad you know how to work with this technique, because I don't Well, guys, we're officially in trouble.

Guys, we were so close. There is a pillar there where we stopped. Everything beneath us is solid rock. And we didn't know that. I mean, we dug a bunch of holes here pretty easily with a shovel. There was no stone. But, it turns out, that's where the stone is. And he's not there. And we need to lay the line there, because where the stake is, other communications pass. First of all, the middle of this section is just filled with roots, which isn't the worst problem, because we've finally hit solid rock, and this thing won't take it. So in this middle of the trench we were only able to go 10-12 inches deep, and we need a damn 24 inches.

We could run a line in the pipe and go 18 inches, but even that is beyond our reach. Yes. And the pipe is expensive, and installing it is another nightmare. Together. As you can see, our lines are not even. They are like spaghetti. So, yes. But it's all because of this faulty wheel. You have to constantly tweak this thing, guys. Everything can't be easy, right? It ca n't. In our case, no. We know this. Well, I have to admit, I'm really upset that nothing worked out with the trencher, and I've had enough of this project. So we

decided to hire guys who had much more stamina than I did. So, they'll come with a mini excavator that will just dig up this area, and I won't even have to lift a finger. So we're still saving money, but it's significantly less now. It's still a win, right? There is nothing victorious about this. Let's be realistic. Our guy is just taking a break, and he's already gotten this close to home. So this line is my starting trench, and this one is his. With a mini excavator, it is of course much wider, but it easily reaches a depth of 24 inches. So, okay. I think this will work. This thing is so cute.

Okay, guys, outside. They work hard for us. So we decided, we decided So, we decided to start working inside. We will lay all the wiring for electrical outlets, possibly lighting. Let's see how far we get. Friends, I won't lie. I'm a little sorry we didn't stay outside. It's so hot and stuffy here. Yes, it's hotter inside than outside. We need to do all this very quickly to insulate the room and install air conditioning. I know. I hate that you have to boil yourself alive just to be cool in the end. I lost my mind. That was pretty good. My brain was boiling.

Okay, let's run this damn wire. Okay, the first line is ready and looks good. We are satisfied with the result. It went pretty well. Now we need to do this a hundred more times for a hundred other things. How do people do it in big houses? That's what I realize with plumbing and electrical. There's so much to do, and this place is tiny. I don't understand this. Oh, we were just clearing out a pile of firewood in the yard and look what we found. Wow, dude. We made him really angry. It is also massive. God, he just wants to kill right now. Oho. Oh, there he is. Well, we'll find you again in two seconds.

I know you're there. Friends, we desperately need a break from home. So we're going on a date. We are going to the cinema. But before that, we stopped to refuel. We use Upside to get cashback. And they are again partners in this video. Upside gives you cash back on groceries, restaurants, and fuel. And we found a station where they would give us back 15 cents per gallon. And believe me, these amounts really add up. We just checked and our total earnings on the app are approaching $200. To use, simply open the Upside app. Search for deals nearby. Once you find the one you need, click " activate", pay with your card as usual, and receive your payment.

We've already mentioned this, but Upside has returned over a billion dollars to users. To see how much you can earn, download the free Upside app and enter promo code Endless Adventure to get an extra 25 cents off a gallon on your first gas fill. Just finished talking to a local cabinet maker. We received an estimate for our kitchen furniture. Please note that the kitchen is very small. 10,000 dollars. And that's without taking into account the countertop, island, or anything else. First I went to this cool firm and they tried to charge us $20,000. So 10,000 now seems like a perfectly reasonable price.

Yes, the house is small, so it seems like everything should be very accessible, but it's not. When you try to do everything at the highest level and luxuriously, the costs exceed the usual. But in general, it seems like everything is insanely expensive right now. I just found out the prices for household appliances, because this is a kitchen. We need a standard amount of equipment, despite the small size. That's about $7,000. Luckily, it looks like there's a sale going on there right now. So at least we can save a little on that. Of course, we saved a lot of money by not hiring electricians to dig the trench. But I still had to pay $2,000 to rent a mini excavator to

finish it. Then you still need to install an electrical panel, which costs $4,000. I don't know if we said it, but we chose spray foam for the ceiling because it's a non-ventilated roof. We will insulate the rest with mineral wool, it will be cheaper, but we will not make the foam ourselves. The craftsman wants $3,000 just for this ceiling. We also wanted to fix our pumping station: clean it, replace the pipes, and install a filtration system. This will cost somewhere around 3-5 thousand dollars. Where will we get so much money? We need to sell that truck as soon as possible. We have n't sold it yet. When we started, I had no idea the costs would be so high. We would probably save

a lot of money if we didn't try to do everything at the highest level, but we can't do anything about it. But one way or another, we will do it. So, let's get back to work, shall we? Probably so. Let's cut costs where we can and do everything we can. That's why we do all the wiring ourselves. I like doing these stop-motion shots because it seems like the wire is laying itself. I would really like it to be like that Guys, I know it doesn't take much effort, but I'm already sweating. It's so hot here. But look, you're one step closer to air conditioning. I think this is a lie. It seems there will This was a real home run.

Oh, that's a joke about the wire. This is called a " run" if you didn't know. Home run, because he's going to his house. Home. This is our first home run. It goes to the panel, which will be right there, mounted on the outside. Well, we've done most of the wiring. We call this place the "spaghetti monster." This is where everything will connect to the panel. But now we need to deal with the lighting in the living room. We had some difficulties.

Well, we never had our own house with lighting. So I don't know how it's done. I don't know how to properly light a room, friends. I tried to remember my family's houses, my friends' houses, my Airbnbs, and wondered: where were the ceiling lights anyway ? I don't know. We were going to install these built-in LED lights. You can change the light temperature. We want all the lamps in the room to have the same color temperature. We thought four would be enough, but I think we need at least six. The ceiling here is quite high. Six of these. We will have a ceiling fan with a lamp. We'll also put a small accent light there and one above the sink. I think together this will be what is

needed. Oh, it will shine. It will be cool. Just like your dancing. How is the weather outside? Horrible. What about inside? It reminds me of that scene from Ace Ventura where he climbs out of a rhinoceros's ass. So, I think we're laying the last piece of wire 12-2. And, uh, yeah, we've been doing this for a few days now, guys. And you see that we are real experts. I'm just checking to see if we have enough length to get to the location. This is a technically correct approach. I think the length is enough.

It looks pretty good up there. Wire. No, you're too hot. I had to change into shorts. I can't wear pants indoors anymore. I don't think anyone is complaining. We're running this pink 30-amp dryer cable. And it looks like bubble gum or something. What do you think, similar? This is a very nice pink color. I like it, but I don't like how stiff and thick it is. It's a little harder to work with than these yellow " spaghetti". Too hard and thick for you? A little, but I'm coping. The we arrived in Texas. We've been here for a month. This is just wild, people. We needed this. The only downside is that we need to make one cut.

This needs to be done outside because we need to saw a bunch of 2x4s. But it became much cooler outside. The grass, as you can see, was completely dry. So now it's going to turn a little green. Yes. Good. Yes. And a small thunderstorm on top of that. I like it. Welcome to my laboratory. He only has this desk because I made him work at the desk. He was going to do everything on the floor. That's why I keep this girl around. We spent a whole day making these boxes. We really want to use these small flat lights that are currently at the peak of popularity. This is what everyone is using for concealed

lighting now. They're really cool because you can change their placement after the drywall is installed. You just need to run the wires, they will hang down, and you can cut a hole in the drywall anywhere you want. So, that makes working with him very easy. You just snap it in, then pull it out, and you can mess with all the electronics. The only problem is that it requires a small cavity, and it has to move freely because we don't know exactly where it will be. So, that means you can place these lights anywhere in this box. This gives you great flexibility in installation. And then you can change the settings with this little thing. You can adjust any light temperature in the house. As always, I had to tinker a bit with the tweaks, but it will work. I

have to turn off the fan every time we record these spoken word segments, and the sweat just runs down my face. It's so hot here. Exciting. This is the last box. It seems like we've been doing this forever. I didn't think it would take us all day. Now we have a nice cavity for the light fixture. You can place it anywhere here. Flexibility, versatility. That's it. I'm losing patience. We're just vacuuming, cleaning everything, because it was the dirtiest project. We had so much debris after drilling holes for the electrical. This is funny. On the right is what every

other surface here looks like. We were very happy because we had installed all the ceiling boxes. So we decided to go and put clamps on all the cables that were just hanging down. And I tried to do it with our big pink dryer cord. And you see what we have done. It was ridiculous. Now we'll either have to pull this wire back out, or remove it all and redo it. And voila. What nonsense. Oh, hello. What am I doing here again, people? I'm laying our penultimate cable. I think, I hope, we're doing this for the exterior lighting, and we need to make another line for the front exterior light, and then open the beer, baby, because we're done with

the electrical. Woohoo! It's probably not a good idea to dance on one leg on a ladder, but I do it. You look like you know what you're doing. Well, I managed. I have survived up to this point. I think I've learned to use a ladder pretty well. At least better than me. Well, yes. I have never fallen before. Okay, friends. I finally have proof that Allison is getting injured too. Okay, it's probably time to go to the hospital.

I hit my knee. I want to note that this is probably only the third or fourth time I've bled on this project. We both put our sweat and tears into this project, but most of the blood is from me. Most of the blood. Yes. Oh, what is this? Ha. The last cut. The last line has been laid. We're done with the wires. Wow, you're all sweaty, girl Sweat was literally dripping down my legs. People, if you climb to such a height here, it's like being in a sauna. It's so hot and stuffy up there, it's just awful.

Well, we've successfully turned this place into a complete mess again. We just cleaned it up, and then immediately messed it up again. Yes, but it's organized chaos, right? These are our PEX fittings. This is our charging station. We have all the electrical materials here. And here is a pile of garbage. A good old pile of trash. Every good construction site should have a pile of trash. Come on. You know, for a small house, there's a lot of wiring here. But the reason for so many wires is that we are trying to make this a super modern luxury home. And that means a lot of

household appliances. Essentially, all the appliances found in a typical home, and even more. Of course, there are all these 12/2 wires-the yellow wires that power all the outlets. They go to all the switches. They will power all the lighting. Basically, everything works for them. We like this because they support 20 amps, which means there can be more power on that line. These two thick black wires go to our instantaneous electric water heater. There are very conflicting reviews about them. Some adore them and trust only them. And some consider them the worst invention in the world. So we test them in our little house.

I mean, in our experience, almost all of Europe uses them. So, their technology must be pretty advanced by now, right? There may be long periods when we will not be here, and we do not need a large boiler running non- stop. And another disadvantage is that boilers, of course, are terribly huge and take up too much space. This one takes up much, much less space. We have this bubblegum pink wire that provides a 30- amp circuit for the dryer. That cute little blue wire at the bottom is a Cat 6 cable, it will go to the wall outlet where we will plug in Starlink. So, we will have Starlink wired internet. This will be cool.

Oh, that reminded me that there's still something to be done with him. Devil. We're not quite finished with the gasket yet. We've thought we were done four or five times But I think this is the last one. And of course, there are a lot of separate circuits in the kitchen, because it's recommended, and the codes require a separate circuit for the chopper, for the refrigerator, two separate GFI circuits for the outlets, and we also installed a separate circuit for the dishwasher. Everything is completely separated, so there will be no automatic weapons to knock out. There is also low-voltage wiring for the thermostat, because we

want to connect a small Nest thermostat here. And this other white low-voltage wire is for the doorbell. So, we'll have a wired doorbell because we don't want to mess with batteries. And, of course, there's a smoke detector over there. Ugh. It's also connected with wires, because no batteries, friends. I'm so glad it's done. We are a big step closer to insulating these walls and installing air conditioning here. But before that, we need to lay the water supply, which we've actually already started doing a little bit off-screen. This will probably be one of our simplest projects, but also one of the scariest, because if you connect these pipes incorrectly, you can have big problems. We don't want any leaks here. You know, with the van, we've had

too many leaks in our lives. Yes. We use PEX A, which is the most flexible plastic PEX pipe, and it uses class-leading cold expansion fittings. We have a special tool that expands the fitting, then you just put it on, it compresses, and you're done. We're trying to make everything as simple as possible, because we're not very smart ourselves and have never laid plumbing before. Yes. So we spent a lot of money on the tool, hoping that we wouldn't have any problems in the future. Where are you going? I do n't know. Very unfortunate, he said, they just threw away money and hope that it will solve the problem. Oh,

of course. Trench. We are already tired of her. Enough of us. We decided that was enough. Instead, we'll just dig a ditch around it. We will build walls, we will live there until the end of our days, we will not go out anywhere and we will not see anyone, because we are already fed up with everything. Okay. Unfortunately, this is not a moat. There will be water here, but it will be in pipes. This will be the line from our pumping station. We will be laying new PEX pipes here and this will be our new trench for the water line. So, it's still a trench. Everything is a trench. My life right now is a continuous trench.

Suffice it to say " trench". You say that too often. Aha. So, unfortunately, that's all we managed to do in this video. You've probably noticed that we've been releasing videos about renovations for a very long time because we want to complete the projects, but we just can't seem to get them done. We continue to shoot, procrastinate, and after two weeks we realize: we need to show at least something. So this is what this "something" is. We are halfway to the goal. We are halfway there with the lines and wiring inside. We are already completely finished with electricity. Yes. One thing was done. Aha. But we still need to work on the plumbing and water supply. As we said at the beginning, this is an endless project.

Endless. You have to live up to your name, right? In addition, we had to lay all the lines and then fill in the trenches, but first we need to fill in the sand, because here, as you can see, there are solid stones. I don't want to put this on top of wires and pipes. Do you see this mosquito? He's just making fun of me. She, get out of my ear. But the sand will only be delivered on Monday, and today is Friday. Yes. So I'm all. Tomorrow, guys, we're going to the pool. We are spending the day with friends. I don't think about this house, having run far away. If you thought we were joking about constant trips to the pool with a Resort Pass, we really are.

We do this all the time But, friends, this small section of the repair was very difficult. The two of us have been working non- stop every day for the past month. I mean, from the moment we wake up until we go to sleep. I think we could use some rest soon. Don't worry, there will be a few more videos. I think there are still projects we can complete. My body really can't take any more. I have so many new pains. My back still hurts. I'm falling apart, friends. Alison has to do most of the work herself. Yes, everything is fine. I'm learning a lot and I like helping. But yeah, we said when we got back here that we did n't want to ruin Eric's

health anymore, but since then we've ruined him even more. So, you could be destroyed if you continue to stand over this trench. I don't know what I'm doing anymore, friends. I'm just, you know, that's all I am. I'm done. I think this is obviously the end. Oh, okay. I guess goodbye, adventurers. See you on the road.
