You hear the phrase the last couple free agencies for Austin Hayes and then that smile of like man maybe I should have. How cool is it for him to have that kind of moment and pay off that belief? Absolutely. You know that you start to develop relationships with people and AJ and this team you heard has had their eyes on Austin Hayes. It just hasn't lined up until now. And then you hear about that San Diego discount. Guys want to come here and play. Yeah. There's a certain joy when you show up at the ballpark here on a daily basis. Every time you open your door and you step outside 68 to 75, I think I can function in that. But then you show up and like you were talking about PEve,
this is a contending team. Yes, you're in the National League West trying to compete with the Dodgers, but at the same time, all you need is a ticket to the dance and see what happens. And this team might make something happen. You're talking about grinding in Triple A to walking into Petco Park in the middle of a playoff run. Quite a drastic change that I think you'll get the best out of Austin. Look, the psychology of these moments, right, as you're in August, you know, the playoffs are looming if you can get there. Same kind of deal for Randy Vasquez tonight, pitching for his spot in a rotation. He threw very well. Five innings, two hits, J.
Absolutely he did. No, Randy Vasquez saw the acquisition of Casey Mai and Robbie Ray and he knew if he wanted to stay in this rotation, he had to pitch well. He did five days ago in Arizona and a lot more of the same today. the two seam fast ball locking up Far Show. There's the cutter. Manny Machado outstanding all day behind him. But Randy Vasquez in five innings didn't walk anybody. Very aggressive in the strike zone using the sinker cutter for seam and the sweeper when need be. I love the mix and it looked like he was kind of, you know, working on his feet a little bit. He did make one mistake, that was it, but he never went back and made another mistake. Continued to go with that fast ball. He moved it to the inside to the
outside, which I love being able to use that pitch on both sides of the plate. And I like guys that can add and subtract. And it looks like he's the type of guy that can add and subtract. And I also like guys that know that their spot might be taken or might be up for grabs and they grab it themselves. Well, that's not going to happen to you. You're on Sunday Night Baseball next week as well with the Astros. Where the Astros might want me out of the booth, but stop none of that before that happens. before that Seattle series.
It'll be at San Francisco for three. Look, the Astros lose two of three here, but they're in this position in large part because they went 23-9 in three games against the Rangers, blew them out, took control of the West. When the Astros are good moving forward, what does that look like the rest of the year, Jeff? You get good starting pitching and you have Yordon Alvarez being a threat in the middle part of that lineup. You do need some guys on the exterior of Yordon and Jeremy Payey to go out there and put provide some just get on base. Just find a way when the Astros are good. They're flooding the bases. They're driving guys in with high-risisk numbers and they're leading to that back into the bullpen.
But they need to go out there and get good starting pitching consistently. But these guys found a little bit of a lull. We knew that the San Diego Padres's had a good pitching staff. So now it's just a matter of who can make the best adjustments moving forward. Hopefully the Astros do. I think Parades and some of the guys behind Yordon are going to be critical to the Astro success because if I'm facing the Astros, Yordon's not going to beat me. He's going to have to swing a lot out of the zone. We saw him do that in the last few days. So the guys, he's going to have to take some walks. The guys behind him are going to have to do some damage as well.
We've seen it a little bit leading into this series when they face contending teams and there's an opportunity with an open base, they will not pitch to them. they will put them on and challenge everybody else. You know, the one thing we hate on this show is when we leave with something left in our pocket. It'll drive you nuts. Yeah. All week. And so with two teammates in the booth together, former teammates did. April 2008 in different uniforms, Jeff Blum goes yard.
Look at the off. Look at that thing. You got to be kidding me. How many change ups did you throw in your career? Those damn change ups still coming back to haunt us right there. You have no idea. I gave back my game day paycheck to have them play that on that screen right there. I didn't know there was video about it, but I could not believe that I got to that ball. And thank goodness Dyke and Park. If we'd have been doing that here, no chance. I love the reaction is 11 out of 10. You got to be kidding me. I said it in the dugout. That wasn't a bad pitch.
No better change up down. If I'm going to give up homers to anybody, I'd rather give them up to guys I like. Nobody I like better than this guy right here who just took a razor to his head that morning. Evidently I needed some hitting hair. We'll wrap it up from here in San Diego next. 72 your final score as the kids run the bases. Hit subscribe for more MLB news highlights and analysis from the MLB on NBC.
