Food is WILD on the World’s Biggest Island!! | Transcript:

We got another one! Welcome to Greenland, where every meal is an unknown adventure and whatever you catch is what you eat. Oh, wow. Today, we're heading deep into a fjord to a restaurant that literally feels like it's at the end of the world, and I couldn't believe what they served. Then later on for dinner, we've arranged a Greenlandic barbecue on the beach. Where we'll eat some of the most unique Arctic ingredients including one thing I've never tried in my life. Oh, wow! Good morning! Hope you're having an amazing day.

It's Mark Wiens. Welcome to Nuuk, Greenland, and we are starting the day at the pier. We're about to jump on a boat and hopefully, we'll have a good catch for lunch. Oh, okay, here we are. Hello, guys. Okay! Welcome to, uh, Greenland! Thank you. Hi, nice to meet you! Yes. Nice to meet you! Great, nice to meet you. Oh, here's our boat. Oh, okay. Oh, nice. Yeah. Qooqqut boats. On our way to Qooqqut Nuan. Can you tell us what exactly we'll be doing? We are going on a fishing trip.

Yes. This concept called fish and dish. That means that, uh. we will go in, uh, to a restaurant inside the fjord. It's about approximately 1 hour from here, Nuuk. And, uh, before we reach the, uh, restaurant, we will find, uh, some spots where we can fish and, uh. try to see if we can catch some of the redfish. Okay. Catch lunch. I think they're. I think it's also called rockfish. Oh, okay. That's the most popular to catch because it's more difficult than cod. Okay. And then, uh, we will, uh, give the fish to the chefs in the restaurant, and then, uh, they will, uh. prep it for you, and then serve it in four different ways.

Yes. Fish and dish. Yeah. Incredible. you catch it and within 1 hour you will actually eat it. So, Wow. That's the whole concept. Okay. How good of a chance do we have of catching something? A hundred percent. Yes. Okay! Otherwise, it would be the first. This is my favorite kind of fishing trip when we have 100% chance. I promise you. Okay. Promise. I promise you. Yeah. Okay. We got the promise but we are setting off.

It is a beautiful morning. It is. Oh, can't wait to go to try our luck fishing and we're gonna be sailing through or going through, uh, one of the fjords, which I think is like one of the biggest fjords. The second largest in the world. Like a huge fjord. Second largest in the world? Yeah. The other one is on the east coast. Wow! So, both of the largest fjords are in Greenland? It is. Incredible. We're on our way! Oh, this is amazing! The spray of the saltwater, Greenland! The water! That air is so fresh and so crisp!

The smell of the sea, it's never felt so pure! That is literally an Arctic freezing breeze. Okay, we're passing by the iconic mountain, which is the emblem and the symbol of Nuuk. So, when you're in the center of Nuuk you can see that mountain in the distance, the rugged rocks, and now, we're pretty close almost at the base. It is so beautiful and we're starting to see some of our first icebergs floating around.

Whoa, there's an iceberg. Look at that. Oh, man, it is unbelievable. We're coming to our first icebergs just floating in the water! That color and because it goes, I mean this is just the, the tip of the iceberg, it goes lower. You can see the color change because of the whiteness, the purity. That is unbelievable and you look below, yeah, you see like it just keeps on going.

This is. otherworldly! Incredible! We've come. You can actually reach out and touch the iceberg! That is amazing! And freezing cold. A Greenlandic iceberg! Christian's, uh. nephew yesterday, Rene, he mentions to me that, uh, he, I mean, he spent his entire life in Greenland and the, the moment he went to Europe and saw a tree for the first time, he was amazed. So,

I think that's the same contrast of us seeing an iceberg here for the Inuit, for local Greenlandic Inuits. It's kind of the same comparison, us seeing an iceberg for the first time. Something so common here but something so unique to us! And from here we are continuing into deeper into the fjord, which is again the world's second largest fjord on the world's largest island, which is Greenland. Wait, can you tell us about this waterfall? This is, uh. the only waterfall here in the Nuuk Fjord that actually runs, uh, all year.

It starts up here and. we have like three, four, five big lakes. Also, we have still glaciers from the last ice age. So, this water here is probably like, of course, something is new. Uh, it's melting water, but the glacier water will be like 10 11,000 years old. So, you can go get the. some water from the Fountain of Youth and it can keep you. So, locally, it's considered the Fountain of Youth? It is. Drink a cup of water? Oh, and cups provided. That's amazing! There you go. Be careful you don't get too wet. It's pretty powerful.

Okay. She looks at us, she said, "You guys need this stuff!" Yeah! Okay, I'm gonna go in for the water. That's pretty wet. Is this the way? Oh, there it goes! Whoa! Okay, we got some and I got pretty wet, too. I bathed in the Fountain of Youth! Let's try it!

Oh, wow! Oh, that's the purest water you'll ever taste in your life! Wow! Ah, that is the taste of Greenland! Pure. Christian, you gotta try some. Can you see the difference? Immediate difference! Can you see my, my age difference? I think I'm starting to get younger but, oh yeah, ultimate refreshing. Oh, that will wake you up! Before we continue with this video, I just want to take a moment to say a huge thank you to our sponsor, Airalo, and right now,

I'm in one of the most spectacular countries I've ever been to, Greenland! Whenever I travel somewhere new, the very first thing I do is get connected. Before arriving here, I purchased my Greenland eSIM through Airalo and as soon as we landed, I activated it, and within seconds I was online. Whether it's checking maps, finding our next destination, staying in touch with my family, uploading stories, or even sharing this journey with all of you. Having a reliable connection is something I never take for granted! That's one of the reasons I love using Airalo. They're the world's first eSIM store with coverage in over 200 destinations. So, wherever we travel next, it's easy to stay connected.

I can keep my phone number, use affordable local data, and get online within seconds wherever we go. Right now, Airalo is offering our community 20% off with the code MARK. This offer is exclusive to our community and available to the first 100 people. And if you missed that, don't worry, you can still get $3 off your first eSIM. You can just download the free Airalo app. I'll leave the link in the description box, or you can click on the QR code here.

Don't forget to use, uh, my code MARK, M-A-R-K, at the checkout. From here, we have more food to eat. Let's get back to the video! What a stunning spot! This is where we're gonna go fishing. Oh, nice. So, this is a very traditional way to do this. Very cool. Yeah. It's quite heavy, because it's so deep down here. Okay so. I think it's called the. So, you want to go down? You want to go all the way to the bottom?

Yeah, we're gonna try. Ninety meters. Yeah, definitely. So, this one is around 110 meters line. Okay. You grab this. Oh, okay. So, the, that weight will hit the ground? Hit the bottom. Okay. Yeah. So, the traditional way to fish, and there's 2 types of: there's cod and there's rockfish, and we are going for rockfish but cod are throughout the water. Rockfish are the deep sea on the bottom. So, you want to drop the line as fast as possible. Just let it unravel all the way to the bottom to try to beat the cod and go for the rockfish, because the rockfish are really beautiful and I think really tasty.

Well, everything is really tasty. Are rockfish more tasty than cod, or they're both good? Yeah, I think so. I think. Okay, okay. For me, it's better. Okay, so we'll go for rockfish first. Always the woman doing the hard work here, huh? Oh, I'm doing the hard work! That's the important part! This is much more fun. You get to see first what's on the line. Let's see what we got. We're gonna have some. it's gonna take some time before we get it up.

Oh, okay. Yeah. Look at that calm water. There's 2! We have redfish! Here we go, success immediately! That was nice! Wow, well done! Thank you! You're an expert. Whoa. I told you! You told, yes, 100%! That one's bigger. Wow! Yeah! So, you gotta be careful because there has a lot of spikes around here.

Okay. And they're like toxic for other fish, but it's not toxic for people. Okay. But it hurts a lot when you get one in your fingers. Yeah. don't get poked by it. Oh, so don't, Yes, exactly. Basically, take it like this in the mouth. Okay. 2 fish immediately. This is the rockfish? Yes. Okay. Now, it's your turn. Okay! Wow! Well done. Well, you guys did an amazing job. First line down, 2 fish for lunch, instant success!

Let's see if I've got what it takes. I'm gonna go down. Just drop it all the way down. Never been in a more spectacular location. Oh, I'm down. Yeah, sure, you just walk over. Hundred-meter pull-in. Well, that just keeps on going and going. It's like a never-ending line. Okay. Whoa! Looks like there's 3 fish! Oh, man!

Check it out! Oh, we got a cod, too! Whoa! I think that's a cod, redfish. 2 redfish! Amazing! Wow! This is my kind of fishing. Instant success, just dropped the line. Plenty to eat for lunch today. That is absolutely amazing. We got 5 fish already in like 10 minutes! Fishing successful. Now, we're hunting for ice. So, what are you looking for when you're hunting for ice? Like the purest iceberg?

Yeah, I just want the. the right type of ice. I can see on this ice here that it has been floating on this side for a long time. Oh, okay. It's basically like a sponge now. There's a lot of small. Oh, yeah. I know this will melt really quickly. So. Okay. So, you're looking for like a hard. We don't want the. Yeah, we need to find, uh. some, some small cubes somewhere. Okay. And maybe we can shoot something off.

Shoot something off, yes! We're getting ready to do something I can safely say I've never done in my life, ice hunting! Looking for the perfect iceberg to get a piece of ice to bring back for the restaurant for the meal. The problem is this one is a really small caliber. It's basically for seals. Oh, okay. Normally, when we shoot ice, we need a bigger caliber because this almost nothing happened.

It's a big chunk. Do you have like an axe? Yeah, but I don't want to get too close to it because it's really unstable. Oh yeah. You see, it's actually starting to tip. Tip? Oh, yeah, you're right. You're trying that chunk at the top there? Yeah, it looks quite weak, but as you can see how many shots - Yeah, wow. It's tough.

See, how hard it is? Yeah! That's good ice. Wow, that is amazing! But this is life in Greenland and that is the purest chunk of ice that you'll ever see on Earth, possible. She was actually telling me that somebody, uh, harvests some of the ice around here and it goes to Dubai for like cosmetics, tightening of the, tightening of the skin, maybe. The purest ice! Oh, okay. That's our chunk! There you go! Okay. World's freshest ice secured! Nicely done! A little bit cold but you can try to hold it.

A little bit cold. It looks very. What was the first - You know she's local when she says that an iceberg is a little bit cold. Okay, gonna give it a go. There's a small, uh. it's a red dot. Okay. Right. Oh, it's empty. Okay. Very cool. Oh, there it went. Oh, yeah.

Okay, wow, that is heavy! I just scooped out some chunks of ice that we shot off. This is incredible! Yes, look at this. You gotta -- pick it up. What do you use it for? Okay. Iceberg secured. We are guaranteed fresh fish and ice. Cold beverages now for lunch. Look at the purity of it. Oh, it's so cool! Never been so excited for ice in my life! Let's try it. -- Mm, mm. How was that?

Amazing! Oh, it's so pure and good here. What you just put in your mouth is like 15, 20,000 years old. Whoa! I think you're supposed to wipe it on your. massage your face with it to tighten up your cheeks. Is this right? I think so. I don't know. Is this right? I'm not doing it but -- I know women in Dubai doing it. Okay! So, now, I've got, I've had the Fountain of Youth and now I'm having the Greenland, Greenland cosmetic treatment. And now, you owe me $300. Okay! It's priceless! Yeah, I can. I can feel the effects immediately. Fountain of Youth Glacier. Oh, that actually feels quite good.

You can massage your face and drink all at the same time. Okay, my face is cold. That should be enough ice for the meal. Yeah, plenty! We've got everything secured. Now, we're heading deeper into the fjord to the restaurant! Should be there soon! I am hungry! Man, we are pulling up to Qooqut Nuan. But what a setting! It is majestic! Wow! What does, what does Qooqut Nuan mean? It actually means this, uh, diving, uh, around mountains, the valleys around here that you can clearly see.

Oh, okay. And then Nuan means happiness or joy. Oh, Nuan means happiness in Greenlandic. Yeah. So, we often say, "Ah, Nuan!" It's so nice, it's lovely! Ah, okay. And it can be about experiences or the weather or anything. Touchdown, Qooqut Nuan! What a location! The water is so crystal clear. What a setting. It is spectacular! Wow! They did warn about the mosquitoes during the summer in Greenland.

Now, there are tons like there's just swarms of mosquitoes coming at you. That is natural. You are truly here in Greenland. You've never been so connected to the nature. Everything is about nature. Everything comes from the land. Another thing you'll notice, and you might have noticed already, but there's no trees because we're so far north. So, there's no, no trees, just shrubs, or I think these are about the biggest plants you'll see. But that makes for the landscape to be so dramatic.

We have officially made it! Welcome to Qooqqut Nuan, and this is, for sure, one of the most unique restaurants in the destination that I've ever been to. This is one of those restaurants where, I mean, we haven't even had the meal yet, but, already, the destination, the journey to get here is part of the adventure, and is the adventure! Uh, but before we step inside, we're just gonna go quickly meet the, the chef and the owner. Hello, good morning! Good morning, sir.

Wow! Fresh fish right on immediately. Yes. It's not even your fish, though. Yeah, this is before. Very cool. Yours is down here. You've been catching a lot of redfish. We did. We got some redfish, yes. It's, it's truly not a joke. It's straight-up fish and dish! You fish, come straight to the, the. fish preparing station, everything is cut and filleted right here before it's gonna go into the restaurant to be cooked. As fresh as local, as physically possible.

Okay, redfish time! It's 44 centimeters long. Okay. It means that it's more than 22 years old. Whoa! 22 years old. Yeah, you see. So, it's still incredible. A lot of the staff and the chefs here are Thai from Thailand, and it's going to be a whole set meal using the fish that we've caught. The fish is going right now. We're going to see a little bit of the, the cooking process. We have some tom yum going as well.

Fresh batch of fish filleted directly from the ocean 30 minutes ago. Quick little dusting of flour then it goes into the oil. So, we have over here the redfish frying and then this one is the codfish kind of steaming. Herb in Greenland. Oh, that's a local herb? Yeah. What is it called? Oh, this is a local herb from right here in Greenland. So, the seasoning is local. And then, I think everything is ready. They're just like assembling all the dishes. So, we're gonna sit down and go through, have the entire meal, all the different courses.

Everything that we caught. Kunying, nice to meet you. Oh, nice to meet you! All right, what is this? Uh, it's the fish, uh, skin chip that we made from, uh, torsk and we hang, uh, to let it dry, and then we do like a deep fry, and marinate with some like, uh, herb. A little bit of Thai style. Yeah. Starting off with some ice cold, iceberg cold water. Do you want some of this?

Oh, that's so cold. -- So crisp and cold. Yeah, we also got the, the fish skin to snack on. Oh man, that's crispy, seasoned to perfection. Oh, it's so good. Christian, cheers! And this is a local Greenlandic beer. Look at that. Yes! Greenlandic brewery. Here we are!

Nice and hoppy. Might be made with, made with iceberg water too, probably. Likely. Very likely. Cheers everyone! This is a local Greenlandic beer. Oh, that's phenomenal! Man, everything in Greenland just tastes pure and crisp and fresh! Oh, that hits the spot. That is so refreshing. So, first is a fish soup. Oh, like a tom yum. Tom yum, yes, tom yum. And there's no pak chi for you. No pak chi for me, thank you. No pak chi. Yes, and this is a bread, so you can enjoy together with the soup. And, uh, this soup we made from codfish. From codfish?

Yes. Let's try this. You can see the milkiness, big pieces of the flaky cod. Just try that broth first. Oh, wow! that tastes so good at this exact moment in my life. The creaminess. The gentle flavor of the fish and the seafood in there. Oh, that broth is that's a broth of wonders. Not too spicy but just. so flavorful. Okay, let's try the fish, though. Look at the flakiness of that, that cod. And this is our first taste of the actual fish.

Oh, wow! That. it just collapses. I think actually chewing is optional. Just falls apart. Oh, it's incredible. Man, it's so pure. It's so fresh. Just flakes of cod are just flaking apart. How is that tom yum, Christian? Just as good as in Thailand, honestly. Not quite as intense but it, it's just delicious. This moment in time, perfect. Yeah, for this moment in time, this is, nothing is better.

No. I can safely say this is the most remote bowl of tom yum I've ever had in my life. Well, here comes the main course. So, now, the main course. Wow! Yeah. Three different types or preparations of fish, plus rice, plus potatoes, plus salad. Everything is beautifully done. I never would have expected in remote Greenland fish and dish, and gourmet quality cooking. Okay, gonna start with, this one is redfish with a Thai red curry.

Add some of that curry sauce. Grab some rice. Oh, yeah. Lightly, the fish has been filleted, lightly dusted in flour, and then fried, like shallow-fried, you know, with that kind of creamy red curry sauce. Excellent! And rice. Oh, it's been a while since I've had rice. Mmm, Jasmine rice.

Okay, next up for the cod. And grab some of the sauce. There's basil in here, there's chilies. That cod is just like, literally, just so soft like a pillow. Oh, wow! They said that's an oyster sauce with onions, basil, chilies. Fantastic! A little bit spicy. The fish again has been dusted in flour; fried and then just like, it just completely collapses.

It is so crispy, so fluffy. It does feel like a, a cloud, like a pillow of fish in your mouth. That is phenomenal. Okay, and then next up for the redfish with the Arctic Greenlandic thyme. Oh, man. Really looking forward to this. Okay, and this one is served with spinach sauce. Okay, so we've got the steamed, actually kind of like poached fish.

Oh, wow! Oh, with that creamy sauce, I do want to really taste that, just the purity of that Arctic thyme as well. Just pure. Oh, it's so nice. Like, not too strong or overpowering. Almost has a little bit of a lemoniness to it. But again, that redfish is just like, it's crumbling in my mouth. -- It collapses. I think it's a little more firm than the cod. So, the cod almost has like a cotton texture; it's so soft, it's so fluffy.

The redfish is also very, very soft, very tender as well, but it has a little more of a firmness. Holds up a little stronger. Delicious! Oh, wow. I really love that one, 'cause it's not floured, it's not fried. You just taste the pureness, just the, the real texture, the real flavor, nothing covered up. Excellent. What a fish! That bright, big-eyed, deep-sea fish that we caught just an hour ago, now on the table. Straight up fish to dish. So, we've tried all the different varieties of fish, and now, just gonna circle back around and finish them all.

Nice! Some more wildflowers. Well, that was an excellent meal. We managed to finish off everything. Superb. Feeling fantastic! The story is that, um, about 1,000 years ago when the. the Vikings came to Greenland, they also came to Qooqqut, and they were building a settlement in here, Norse settlement, and then they built it different places. They built something for their cows, a stable for their cows over here. So, they brought animals with them? They brought animals with them, yes.

There's one in here if you come with me. Wow! So cool! It's, uh. built, rebuilt after, from the, the Norse, uh, the Vikings. They had a stable here with their animals. The animals was not that bad, that big by that time. Yeah, and it's amazing, like you're outside and the mosquitoes just swarm around you; but when you're in here, it's like the mosquitoes don't come, and he was just explaining it's because the mosquitoes can't see the sky. But I think it is time for the net. Ah, yeah, so the mosquitoes don't attack us.

Okay, now, we're ready to head back outside. This place is very cool. Oh, yeah, oh, that's better. Excellent. So, these are the bellflowers that I just had one in the salad. Yeah. But these come from right here. Wild bellflowers in Greenland. Let's try it, again, but in the nature, right off the plant. Oh, yeah. Oh, it has a sweetness too, like a honeysuckle.

-- Very good. Okay, made it back inside. Never thought I'd be this warm in Greenland. By the way, these things come in big handy when you're here during the summertime. Ah, but just gonna get a quick cup of coffee, uh, before we head back to Nuuk, head back to the big city. That hits the spot. Cup of coffee, and yeah, we gotta have one more cup of glacial ice water before we hit the boat. Oh, that's so good! Man, this is the type of place you literally do not want to leave, and they do actually have some accommodation.

They have some lodges here as well. It would be an incredible place to stay next time. -- But for us right now, back to the boat and we're on our way back to Nuuk. So, it's actually low tide now. That's quite a difference from when we arrived but the water is so crystal clear. Ah, from here we go back to Nuuk because we have a dinner reservation but it's not just gonna be any dinner, it's, uh, gonna be a very unique dinner that I'm very excited about. But in the meantime, we have decided to stop to go fishing on the way so we can, hopefully, catch some more fish for dinner tonight.

Qooqqut Nuan was absolutely incredible. The journey, the destination, the food, the entire package, the entire experience. It was unbelievable! Okay, so this is the next spot for fishing, just off the, off Qooqqut Nuan. 100 meters deep. Whoa. Yeah, it takes some effort to pull this one up.

It's so pretty! It's a cod! Beautiful! Oh, two cods! Oh, yeah, one is on the body. Oh, no! Beautiful cod! Another success, more cod! Oh, it's. two! Yeah. Wow! This is the biggest one yet! Another successful fishing! We got a whole bag of cod and redfish, and from here we're back to Nuuk! Take care, man! Rune, thank you so much, man! Yeah, you're welcome. That was amazing. Yeah, it was a pleasure. Yes, see you next time.

See you! Okay! Bye! Bye-bye! Bye-bye. Nice to meet you. Yes. Thank you so much! Bye-bye, bye-bye! Yeah, thank you to Rune, Elisabet from Qooqqut Boats. Uh, that was amazing. Yeah, back in Nuuk. More food now. Yes! Let's go and eat! And here, oh, what's up, Rene? Hey! Yes! Okay, so straight out of the boat, and we are on our way to dinner. Dinner's gonna be somewhere down there on the rocks with this stunning view over the, the emblematic, the, the symbol mountain of Nuuk.

Wow, the view is incredible. Yeah, sorry we are late. Hi! Hello, hello! Hi. Nice to meet you. Can you tell us what, what we're doing? Yeah, we are, uh, by the Inuk Hostels beach and we are doing the traditional, uh, way of cooking uh that our ancestors had been always doing, since, yeah, for many, many years ago.

Um, before they live in houses like these now, like you, you can see today. They live in, uh, houses made with turf and stones all the wintertime, all the families; and when the summer comes they would open the rooftop and then they would move to the beach to the tent made with sealskin, and just cook in, on the beach and then fish everything but uh, what they can catch during the summertime. But the main food they eat, uh. it was seal meat. Seal meat? Yeah. It's rich of D vitamin. Very good. And that's one of the reasons that they have survived in the Arctic because it's rich of D vitamin.

Oh, because -- you need vitamin D. Yeah. We don't have that much sun during the wintertime and seals were very, Yeah. very important, uh, to our ancestors. And seals have it. Incredible. And Rene is here filleting those fish that we caught. Cod, redfish. What a stunning location! Wow! Okay. we collect this one in the nature on the mountains. So, Yeah. The. all the shrubs? It has to be fried. Oh, so what's, what's on the rock right now? This is seal meat. That is stuck. Amazing! Okay. And this is whale meat.

Wow! Okay. With the. salt from the ocean. Seal and whale on a hot rock. Yes. Using shrubs, like the natural shrubs and herbs. Burning them to heat the rock. So, you're from the. Inuk Hostel? Okay, okay. No, I think it's very important to preserve the traditional culture. Yes. Yeah. Yeah, Inuk Hostel. And, and food is a big part of that. Yeah, it is. Without food like this, we wouldn't be here because our ancestors' lifestyle has been like that.

They were one with the nature, they treated the nature. with respect. If you don't respect it, you get punished by Mother of the Sea and you won't have food. Yeah, it's. In the end. It's very important. -- Okay, so Fried fish with whale blubber. Can't wait to try my first piece of whale blubber. It's, uh, the most delicate food in Greenland. Yeah. And it's very expensive. Okay, so what exactly, what is it called again?

Mattak. And it's just pure whale blubber? Yeah. Is it raw? It's raw. It's raw? Yeah. You can try it. Yeah, first time. And with the. And you dip it into the salt? Yeah. Okay. It's mixed with the Greenlandic herbs and flowers, dry flowers. This salt. It's the first time you try this? Mattak? Yeah, mattak. And I'll give you some salt. Some salt, okay. Oh, thank you. Yeah. So, here we go, my first taste ever of mattak as the, as the seal, as the whale is grilling.

Are you ready? It's so good. Wow! And it's rich with sea vitamins. And you're eating the dry fish. The texture. Okay. Wow, so that's pure raw whale fat. Kind of has like almost like a cartilaginous, like a crunch to it. Yeah. That is delicious. Here is codfish. Oh, codfish. Okay. Wow. And this is another dried, preserved. You can be eating it throughout the year. Yeah. Oh, that's good too. Uh, I have.

Chewy, but as you keep on chewing, you rehydrate it in your mouth Mm. Yeah. So, this is capelin. All right. Capelin, you cut, you can get it on the during the summertime. Okay. And you just grab it with your net because in the summertime it's so many of it. Yeah. And if you eat 6 pieces of capelin, whole ones, it's like drinking a milk. 1 liter and a half of milk. Yeah. With the calcium? Whoa. That's why our ancestors eat like that kind of food. Whoa, like that.

It's strong. The fattiness comes out of it. Yeah. Oh, that's rich! It's like almost spicy. Yeah, like the fish. Like bitter. Bitter, yeah. Yeah! Well, it's like the fish oils just literally like squeeze out into your teeth! What is the little berries that you added? Uh, ground berries. Oh. Okay. We call it pupangnat. And that will be for seasoning? Yeah. Oh, I just use it for seasoning.

Oh, there they are. It's very big. Okay. It's almost done, these ones. Okay. Because you don't cook too long the, um. how do you call, whale. Oh, okay. It's almost done. The whale is almost done. Yeah. One of the really interesting things is, again, there's no, there's no trees where we are in Greenland. So, when you think about grilling food, you kind of take that for granted actually; when you're in anywhere else in the world, you take that for granted. You have dry wood or wood available that you can grab in the wilderness somewhere and start burning and, uh, cooking. But here it's just these shrubs. You know,

that's like the biggest fuel for fire that's available. Okay, so the, the whale is ready. Yeah. Let's try it. Let's try it! Right off the rock. It's very, very healthy. Yeah. And if you're sick, it will warm up your body very fast. Okay. Like, when you're like really sick. It's like a meat that heats. It's like a. Heat your body. Okay. Thank you! Thank you for cooking. Cheers!

Oh, wow! It's so tender! Yeah. I can't, I cannot believe how tender it is. We even eat it raw. 'Cause that's just like seared on the outside. When it's fresh, fresh cut, you just eat it raw. It's very good. Very well done. Seasoned with sea salt, and then, it's so tender, it kind of melts in your mouth, and then because it's just been seared on the rock, it has a little bit of a smokiness to it. Yeah. With the flavor of the, those little berries, those little. shrubs. Oh, that's incredible.

All right. Now, the seal is ready. Next up for the seal, course number 2! Sorry, I'm gonna take one. Yeah, have one. Oh, the seal has a totally different texture. Wow, it's really like almost like livery and really dark. Yeah? Wow! That is amazing. It is almost like livery tasting, really rich, has a fishy taste because seals eat a lot of fish, but really soft. Yeah, like soft, kind of melts in your mouth, kind of livery, kind of crumbles.

Wow, man, and those, yeah, those little smoked berries also add a nice aroma to it. So tender, so meaty. So rich. It's really rich as well. That is very flavorful. Okay, we're gonna, we're gonna go find some wild tea. These are very healthy. It's like a moss or a lichen, huh? Yeah. So, that can be for a tea? Yeah, it's like good for your lungs. Okay. Yeah. Oh, these are the blackberries here. Yeah. Okay. You take even though they're not uh, maturity, you just put them here.

Yeah. Oh, so you can see this is where all these blackberries are that we cooked with. Yeah. You can take all these blackberries. Yeah. And then. That's gonna be for tea as well? Yeah, of course. Okay. And. Grab this? Take these, and you also take these. Yeah. Like this. Like this thing? Yeah. That's good for the tea? Yeah. Just put it here. These, uh. purpleberry, it's, I don't know how you call it.

Um, kingutang. These little leaves? Yeah, you collect the leaves. It's not the same as a blackberry. We don't use this, but we only use. These leaves? Yeah. Just going to check something else, if there's something else. Okay. We don't have to take too many. Oh, here. See, these are more green. Oh, yeah. These ones? Yes. These are very good.

But we are still waiting. There's going to be another round of barbecue, of grilled, yeah, grilled seal, grilled whale, and then also the fish soup is, or the fish, the boiled fish is coming along as well. But in the meantime, we're getting started on the tea. Ah, which is gonna be really soothing 'cause it's starting to get cold again. Is this the fish that was, or this is different fish? Oh, this is fish like they had. I think it's different. 'Cause I cut all the red fish. Oh, okay. Okay, so you take the pot.

Oh, this is a Greenlandic technique for the fish soup. Pour out the water. Oh, and all the way onto the rock. Oh. Okay, nice. Yes. Cool, because you don't drink the water, it's seawater, right? Uh, yeah. Man, such a cool technique. Boiled. This is the redfish, this is the cod, boiled and then onto the rocks so the water flows out. Boiled in seawater.

Wow, that's the redfish. Oh, that is incredible. -- Oh wow. Firm and flaky, hot, infused with the seawater. Oh, it's phenomenal. Yeah, it's extremely good. Oh, next up for the cod. Oh, wow. Flaky, melts in your mouth. Oh man. Because the nature here in Greenland is so clean and so pure. It's like you can just eat off of anything, use nature. Nature is just so well. respected. It's an essential part of life and survival, and so simple but so tasty and so fresh.

Oh, fish is amazing. And yes. Okay, next up for the seal blubber. This is like a, just feels like it's melting and pure lump of fat in your fingers. Wow! That's like drinking seal. Just completely liquefies. Oh, man, that is the definition of juiciness. Oh, wow! Just like gushes with seal fat in your mouth. Incredible. A unique experience. Very good. Okay. This one is the grilled redfish. Fried redfish. Fried redfish on the rock.

Excellent as well. -- And that redfish. delicious. The firmness from the deep sea. Wow, that's a fantastically delicious fish to eat. Yeah. Just so natural, so real, so flavorful, but just the pureness of all the ingredients cooked naturally; and yeah, as fresh and as Greenlandic as you can possibly get. So, for the final part of our meal, Amaho is gonna make us the wild Arctic Greenlandic tea for digestion, digestion of all the proteins we've had. So, we collected all these different herbs from the side of the rock and the lichen,

and now we have a kettle of hot water. We just do, sorry about my fingers. That's okay. No problem at all. All goes in. Now we have. The blueberries? And we have, uh, flowers, small red flowers here. Pinky. Oh yeah, okay. These are very good. We're gonna leave them. Okay. All the herbs are in the tea. We have the cake ready to go, a Greenlandic cake, and that tea just needs to steep for a little while until we're ready to try it.

Oh, to aid in the digestion for the day. I'm gonna sing. Guys, we have a song! Song time. It's a ceremony song. Wow. Thank you. -- Amazing, amazing. Thank you. Thank you very much. Okay, tea is ready. Are you ready? Yeah. It's not ready. It's been steeping for like 10 or 15 minutes. Yeah, it needs more but you can try. Yeah, sure. Okay.

Do you want to smell? Yeah, give it to Christian. Christian needs some tea. Digestion. It's nice, huh. I'm gonna put some more of these for you. All right, yeah, I'm excited to try that tea foraged from the Arctic herbs. Yeah, it's subtle, has a little bit of a sourness, a little herbaceousness maybe from those blueberries as well. And, uh, yeah, all the different herbs are, I think it's lichen off those rocks?

Lichen or moss or, yeah, it's moss? Moss. Moss lichen. A Caribou deer eat it. Yeah, and the caribou. Yeah, so that we're taking a lesson from the caribou. Like, everything is a cycle here and like, yeah, even the caribou, the deer, they also eat that for the digestion, as we are. And then also that, that cake. Not forgetting the Greenlandic cake. Too cold? Nice. Like flavored with raisins and like kind of dense and really good with tea.

Very nice. What a location, sitting on the perched on rocks. A traditional Greenlandic meal. What a day. Yeah. What a, what an evening in Nuuk.
