Voters then have dealt a historic double blow to President Trump's Republican party in these crucial midterm elections. Results will see his rivals, the Democrats, take control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The president has been distancing himself from the result, writing on social media this morning that if his name had been on ballot papers, quotes, we would have won in a landslide. Let's take a look then at how the results are shaping up. This is the Senate where laws are passed. The ruling party needs 51 seats for control. The Democrats projected to surpass that figure. Uh 54 uh the current projection taking traditional Republican strongholds like

Texas, Kansas, Ohio. Uh this is the House of Representatives where proposed laws are debated. The ruling party needs at least 218 seats to control the chamber. As it stands, Democrats have 225. So, a comfortable majority over the Republicans with 136. Still some votes being counted. Let's get the story of the night then from our Washington correspondent, Iony Wells. The Democrats are celebrating a historic victory. They've won control of both houses of Congress. The American people have spoken and made clear they've had enough of the extremism, enough of the corruption. They want a Congress that's going to deliver for the

American people. And that is exactly what House Democrats will do as soon as we get into office in January. In the race for the Senate, they've won key Republican states: Texas, Kansas, Ohio, Iowa, North, and South Carolina. we just sent a message to every billionaire mega donor, every trillionaire mega donor, every corrupt defender of this broken political system. In this state, in this country, power belongs to the people. Georgia was once also reliably Republican. But here, rising Democrat star John Oaf comfortably held on to his seat. TONIGHT WE CELEBRATE THIS VICTORY AND TOMORROW WE GET BACK TO WORK.

Republicans did hold on in places like Florida. We're going to win it big. Thank you. But win big, they didn't. Donald Trump claimed if he had been on the ballot, they would have. The polls suggest otherwise. The economy was the top issue for voters and twothirds of them said Trump's policies have made their economic conditions worse. Get some of these fuel prices and everything down and get the economy back rolling again so we could start enjoying our life and stuff and have worry about penny pinching every dime we have.

I don't like the war. I don't like the tariffs. Gas prices haven't killed me. Um, I'd rather pay higher gas prices than uh have my freedoms impinged on. These results mean nothing can become law without the Democrats. They can also launch investigations into Donald Trump's administration now. From the war in Iran to his personal finances, but their power is limited. The president told Fox News he'll work with them, but will also veto laws. Well, they're in control, but they're really not in control because they can send over, you know, 50 different great bills that they're all excited about, and I send them back with a nice stamp veto.

He's blamed anyone but himself, but these results do show deep discomfort with his leadership. I Wells, BBC News in Washington. Well, let's get a view then from voters themselves in some of the key states where they have voted for the Democrats, including Michigan and Texas. Here's some of that reaction. I'm feeling optimistic and I'm feeling really proud. I'm proud of Abdul. Proud of the campaign that he ran. There are moments in your life like I don't know when you just feel your blood pressure lower and you can just take a deep breath.

Very disappointed. But that's the way it is. I'm very sad to see what I'm seeing on the Tonight, I need more of you to be more educated. I need you to learn. I need you to see what's going on. I think this is a great day for Texans who finally have their voices heard after years of having an outside interest decide what we get to think and do out here. I am just so amazed by this. This is going to be like real change here. Well, there has been reaction from the former President Barack Obama who has been posting on X, of course, very visible in the final days of this campaign. Tonight he says the American

people sent a clear message. They want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them. And leaders who offer concrete solutions, he goes on to the challenges that they face. Well, as we've been reporting from the Democratic perspective, one of the biggest wins of the night came in Texas, a longtime deep red Republican state. I can see here uh on the US nets that Democrats have just won uh the lieutenant governor position in Texas as well. They've won the governorship for the first time in more than 30 years. And James Telerico, of course, elected senator. Big celebration statewide and in the state capital. Austin, let's hear some of that and what they had to say.

Always bet on the underdog. We were the underdogs in this race. We went up against nearly 40 years of doubt and disillusionment. We went up against more than $300 million, more than any Senate campaign in American history. We went up against all the negative ads, smear campaigns, foreign bots, and AI deep fakes that money can buy. Those attacks were the final howls of a dying establishment. The death rattle of a status quo that knows its days are numbered. They played dirty because they were desperate. But we never lost hope. We never lost faith. And against big money and long odds, we took our power back.
