Ballots burned, vote center vandalized ahead of June primary election. | Transcript:

Burned ballots and voting center vandalism. This morning, election officials are dealing with two separate election security investigations. NBC 4's John Cadillac is live at the LA County Registrar in Norwalk. John, talk to us about what's being done to keep ballots safe. There's a real concern now. Well, you know, it's interesting because they call these isolated incidents and yet we're dealing with two. One of them has to do with one of these ballot drop-off points, which you would think it's it's supposed to be super secure. The only thing you can do is perhaps stick something in there to set something on fire inside and maybe that's what happened. I'll take it to Long Beach because that's one of the

other issues that they're dealing with, too. We had a crew down there this morning, couldn't see any of the damage inside, but this is Cesar Chavez Park voting center. LA County Registrar Recorder Clerk says that sometimes Saturday night into early Sunday, someone broke in. They use the word vandalism, although didn't get into much detail as to what that all means, only to say it didn't interfere with voting operations there. But that's just one incident. The other, News Chopper 4 over it last night in downtown Los Angeles. It's outside the Department of Public Social Services Civic Center location.

The Registrar Recorder Clerk saying that a limited number of ballots inside the box were set on fire. And you can see the box there. Doesn't itself look like it's damaged on the outside, but inside where there were some mail-in ballots, those burned. The Registrar says that they have about 420 of these ballot boxes around the county and they're checked and serviced every single day during the voting season. And these ballots, they haven't said how many were damaged, but they say that they were found during one of those retrieval moments. So they think it happened between those collections. So we spoke with the County Registrar Recorder Clerk Dean Logan throughout this process and

this is what he said about the integrity of your ballot. You know, I think most important what I want to convey to voters is that every vote is taken very seriously and is given the same level of security and integrity and transparency. We take that very seriously. Of both of these incidents are under investigation and the county saying if they find out who's behind any of these, they're going to face some very stiff penalties. Reporting live in Norwalk on the eve of the primaries, I'm John Cádiz Klemack, Today in LA.
