England getting the job done against New Zealand tonight in a warm-up game for the World Cup which kicks off on Thursday. England get their campaign of course underway against Croatia a week on Thursday and you're going to hear it all here on Talk Sport. I'm Adam Catel. Carl Cole's alongside me as we get stuck here to the sports bar weekend which is going to be a regular fixture uh on your weekends. Uh you're more than welcome to come and join us at any point or 3717234. Let's get into the calls cuz this is your show as much as it is ours. All right Gabby, how are you mate? Evening. Good evening Coley. Hello, mate. Oh, I love that. Look at that.
Look at that energy. This energy is good, man. Come on. Give me some good energy. Listen, you know what it is? You two are dignified and you're respectful when it comes to Arsenal. So, I got a lot of love for you two. Do you know what I mean? So, you haven't been like them other sausages paraded in my hand. And so, I have to say that first and foremost. As I just said to the producing the line gents, people don't realize this. That's been a huge long season for most of this team. That's a 9 10 hour flight over to Tampa. That's a climatization. That's taking your family potentially over there. A lot of players are not, as you said, going to be in that final squad. So, it was just more a case of let's just get the minutes and just,
you know, people, if anybody starts to stress or worry about that, we got Brazil playing at the minute and they're going full strength and you're thinking, what are you doing? No, no, I agree with you there, mate. I agree with you there because um when I look at it, I just think it the boys just need to climatize. That's all it is. This is get out there. That's your biggest worry in it. the conditions out there. Gabby, are you are you concerned about that? I mean, what were we today? We were in the well into the 30s, weren't we playing out there today?
The thing is we have it every year depending on where it you know, every World Cup, don't we, Adam? And Coley, we have it in Dubai. It was like extreme temperatures. So, it's nothing new. But, um, listen, we got much to worry about once them goonas getting outside that general. We're going to be absolutely mate. You're going to be like Collies lot in ' 66 when they said that West Ham won the World Cup, aren't you? That's what you're going to be like. Yeah, that'll be Arsenal have won the World Cup. That's what you're going to be saying, aren't you? Defo. Well, I might just be saying Dean Rice has won the World Cup.
No, to be honest, you got You're right. We still got boys to come back in the fold in it. And um yeah, they're they're important. They're important pieces to this puzzle that assembled. So hopefully um look first game they're gonna have as I said there's going to be games behind closed doors when the other lads come in and then he's going to get his real shape and then we're going to take it from there. Ryan, what you thinking mate? I think it was quite a good performance to be honest with you. I say like the last caller said for me it's all about minutes at the end of the day. I think there's not too much to read into, but
one thing I am disappointed in is the fact that Rio is not gonna be making an appearance because I just think it's absolutely electric. Are you a Liverpool fan? Yeah. Yeah, a big Liverpool fan. So, so talk to me about in this year because he's been used sparingly a little bit and I know that obviously slots now gone. Do you think he's going to be quite a big feature next season under Areola? Oh, 100%. I think now is his time to proper show that he is the truth cuz now in the England squad you can see him and the whole nation can see what we've been seeing for the past 12 months. Every time he comes on he's absolutely electric and it brings me to
the point where as English fans we don't really bring a lot of trust to the younger players in the new generation. Obviously back in the day you had your Walcarts, you had your Rooney but nowadays we don't really give the young players a minute. You're like with Lamino Malin in Barcelona and Spain when he was young. If you're old enough, if you sorry, if you're good enough, you're old enough. But we haven't really got that. Would you not think, Ryan, that football's changed a little bit, especially over the last two to three years where people are playing more systemic football. Everybody is being fitted into a system and told to just play the role rather than be that
maverick, be that person that is going to run up to somebody, do a few stepovers, go past one or two, and set people on fire. whereas this young lad's come in uh for your team in particular and he just seems to just play street football. He's playing a little bit carefree and I think you do need that maverick, don't you? At tournaments like this when it's all locked down against a law block, you need somebody that's going to do something a bit crazy and drag a foul out of somebody or something like that. You know what I mean? And he seems to fit that bill. Like you say, it's a shame that he's not part of that 55 and we can't switch him in there.
100%. And obviously you guys have been in the game longer than me, but for me, football works in cycles. And this cycle will come to an end eventually where you're going to need players like Rio, players like Liam, people that get the ball and run at the attackers. It will change. And I think we're starting to see the beginning of that change for the next generation. Well, I think um you make a good point there. I think listen, we all know what Saka can do for England. We've seen him when he's at fullfledged, but I look at um I look at Nani.
Noni does it. Noni, he goes on the outside. He runs at defenders. Um I think Saka comes in a little bit more. Tries to connect and do the one twos and gets in that way. Um but Rio is a totally different. He can go he can go from the inside, he can go outside. He's doing the Denilson step over going crazy. He's just having fun with it. And do you know what? For any defender, Yeah. you don't know what he's going to do. It frightens him, man. Like it' be like, "What? What's this guy going to do next?" Like, he doesn't care who I am. He just wants to get at me.
Yeah. But there's something beautiful about that because obviously he's 17 years of age, is he? So therefore, there's something beautiful about that innocence where it's just like, "Oh, I'm playing for England now, man." No, but I just think he's like that anyway. Always going to be like that. That's good. It's always going to be like that. Listen, obviously we're talking about something that we can't have. You know what I mean? It's a little bit like for the older listeners, it's a little bit like Bullseye in the 1990s.
You remember when Jim Bowen, right, he used to have two darts players in the final and they'd fail and he'd lose and then he'd go, "Let's see what you could have won." And it' bring out a speedboat and they didn't end up winning. Why? You didn't need to do that. Yeah. Why have you showed me that? It's like, in fact, to Mr. Tukul, if you're listening to this show, like, why have you showed us him? Why have you put him on the pitch there? You knew what was going to happen. And why have you showed us that? Why have you dangled the carrot in front of us? We're all getting excited now going, "Look at this kid. He's He's doing Yeah, let's have him in there."
Yeah. Mind you, it was against New Zealand cuz I get that. But no one else was doing the rest of them were playing against New Zealand and nobody else did it, did he? That's true. Maybe they were thinking, "Well, I'm not going to get injured cuz I'm going to the World Cup." And he's thinking, "No, I'm going to go in. I'm going full play." Charlie, how are you mate? Hi, lads. Yeah, doing well. Good. Doing well. Good team New Zealand. We're lucky to be that size.
Stop. Good team. Very good team. Well, you know what? I think Harry Magguire is, you know, he was is a bit annoyed. He didn't get into squad, but Chris Wood up front is he's threatening and our defense showed it today, man. They defended well team. Good. Charlie, give me a break. You've been out today, Charlie. You had a bit of a good day, mate. Yeah. No, no, no, no, no. Saturday night, you're not out, mate. Bottle of blue. Chris was a threatening striker. for a lot of goals last season. Oh, really? Yeah. Joe, I thought Henderson looked silky.
Oh, you're giving up this geyser. I don't know what he's playing. How do you think they're going to do in the World Cup, Charlie? Uh, we'll probably go out in the last 32, I reckon. What's wrong with you, man? This guy's sarcastic, bro. What's up, Charlie? Why you so sarcastic today, man? What's up? Come on, bro. Be a bit more. Come on. I need more from you. Where do you think we'll go out in the last 32 in? Sorry. in the World Cup.
Don't where do you know? Honestly, I think we'll go. We're We're at least semis. At least semi. Yeah. I don't know, mate. Come on. Where's Where's your belief? What's going on? But we're finished. Why do you know, right? When you look at the run, there is a possibility that is it last 32 or is it the last 16 that we could play Mexico at altitude at the Aztec? Yeah, that would be hard. That's a tough one, man. No, I know what you're saying, but Listen, you got to believe, man. Mate, I believe.
You got to believe. I believe. But you're the one that keeps highlighting the conditions to me. You know, you've been in these situations, mate, where it's a little bit naughty out there, you know? I play Yeah. I played over in at Sacramento for a bit and mate, it does. It's hard, mate. Mate, you make one run. He's sweating buckets, mate. Not doing that again. It's not It's a different type of heat. Like, I know the Qatar heat was that must have been very I love it when people say that. What?
It's a different type of heat. Yeah. Because you got the dry heat. You got the moisture. The sun's man. No, no, no. The sun is the sun. No, but it's the atmosphere. Humidity is what you're referring to, right? The humidity. Yeah. The temp the What is it? So when you see when the humidity is there, it's hotter, bro. You can't even There's no air. And that's what that I think that's what they're dealing with. Then you got the dry heat. Yeah. Desert. Desert, bro. And then that's that's actually better, but it hurts your skin more cuz there's no moist. I think the worst thing for England is going to be
that altitude when they're playing at higher. Yeah. Above sea level is that's going to be hard. It's gonna be tough because you won't be able to Yeah. The breathing I hope. But listen, mate. Apart from that, it's essential to be breathing, isn't it? Yeah. You need to breathe. You need to get That's what they're going to struggle with, man. Just get it done, mate. Just get it done. Struggle with some of that breathing. Yeah, just get it done. Breathe, mate. Ben, how are you, man? Hey, lads. All right. Yeah, we're ticking over, pal. We're taking Give us a bit of optimism, mate. Come on.
What you saying? What are you saying, mate? What I'm saying is that last call, Charlie. Just drink responsibly. That's all. Listen, it's weekend. He's weekend, mate. He can have a bit of fun at the weekend. Bottle of blue, mate. He's all right. Yeah, he's grafted. Got a WKD at. You know what I mean? I'm trying to be optimistic. I mean, the boys are everyone's right, man. I mean, it's minutes on the board and it's just Arthur. couple of lads out from the Arsenal boys are probably still carrying
a hangover so they're still on the way back. Yeah. But the one thing I will say about tonight and the one thing I'm worried about is and I've kind of got it's kind of a split point if you know what I mean. So I personally think Harry Kane is a bit deep and I think when it comes to the real the actual games where you're talking your Frances, your Brazil, your Portugules, your Spains, whatever the lead will be, I think he's going to be a bit too deep and might even step into the spots of your Morgan Rogers, your Ezes, your But is it not their job then to go beyond him? Cuz surely when you analyze the season and how well he's done at Bayern Munich, you've got to build your team around the strength of
Harry Kane. And if he wants to drop deep because his ball playing's as good as he's finishing, then your wingers, your lads that are playing wide and your number 10, they've got to get beyond him. Mate, you are right. But you're asking a lot of lads because they're probably going to get the most they're they're going to I'd expect most teams to sit deep and absorb pressure against England because they always do in qualifying. Yeah. even more so in that heat and it's going to be even more there's going to be more expectation of the not the number 10 but the guy who replaces the number 10 to make that run which makes it a little bit more um I feel like in the last 15 20 minutes
of each game we're going to be like my god we need a goal my next point as I said the split point I was going to say is tonight Harry K's got a good header I'm baffled why I didn't take Trent and Harry Magguire We've we've laughed and jolts through Arsenal and whatever this season about this season being set pieces. We'll talk about the best set piece of taken probably in the England setup and Harry Mcguire probably being the best um attacking threat even even though he's a defender from set pieces in an in the last what 10 years. Yeah, good point. Listen, there was some bizarre decisions there. But hey, this is getting a bit bullseye.
Look at what you could have won in it. Yeah, we're talking about all the lads that can't go to the World Cup. I said it. But listen, he must two's on to something, mate. He must be, but he didn't go with the he didn't go with ordinary thinking, but there is a there's a few if you look at the plays that he's put in that squad, right? I think he's anticipating that they are going England are going to be playing some type of low block and then try to catch people maybe. Whereas I think that's that's straight away negative. Yeah, but I'm I'm looking at the players that he's got there, right? Yeah. All six furs, all of them physical specimens, right? But what people have been pointing out here, if people block against England, you are
going to need that player that can open that door that can do a little bit of trickery. Yeah, obviously Foden's out of uh Well, he's not being forward can't rely on. No, no, I just I'm saying Foden's out of form, so you can understand him not taking him. Cole Palmer out of form. So, you can understand that to some type of extent. But when you just see that young 17 year old player today who is a guy that he's gonna run at people, drag people in, maybe draw a f foul and all that type of stuff, you think to yourself, maybe we need something like that.
Yeah. To be able to open a door. That's why we the next best thing is Nani on that right hand side. Trust me, I'm trusting you. Yeah. The next best thing is Nani. And um and then I'm just saying in this England team, I'm not saying as a footballer. Look, Saka, if you're going to go a nice tight game, we saw assistant player. Yeah. Who's who's not going to let you down? So, basically, if we're playing against a team like cuz as you said, we probably lay deep, right? And then we're saying we're going to go on a counter, right? So, if you're going to have that type of format in your head, cuz you're anticipating Croatia is going
to have the ball. Yeah. But what then we watched the we watched Arsenal Champions League final. Yeah. As soon as Noni came on, it kind of went the other way. Do you know what I mean? and he wasn't running behind, but he was carrying the ball and then Arsenal were getting up the pitch. That's that's how I saw it. Do you know what I mean? Saka didn't really to go the other way and try and help. If the two Arsenal and I know I'm talking about Arsenal because they are the prevalent, they're the prevalent um team at the moment. They're looking they look tasty. But if you're going to play with that deep line system, you're going to go on the counterattacks, which I think um probably England are going to
deploy. We need the runners to be able to go just go. And if you had Rio and the closest thing to Rio is Anthony or um Nani going the other way. They don't have to be the best of footballers. We just need to be able to carry the ball up the pitch. And the two PSG lads was able to do that. Kit Scalia and um Dway. We need that type of um performance going forward if you understand what I'm saying. Yeah. On the break. That's what we're that's what we're missing and I hope we can get that right and that's only going to come in training. But if people playing a low block against us, then there's not grass for them to run into. That's where the struggle's going to be because you're going to have to go past people, aren't you?
Yeah. But as we get with the better teams, we're going to be playing a low block. You know what I mean? I think cuz we're not going to have possession like that like the Spain's like these type of Mexico, they're going to a lot of Portugal, a lot of possession. So, we're going to probably be the low block. So, we need to go the other way. But against the smaller teams, yes, we're going to have a lot of possession and we can probably ek out a 1 nil off a free kick or something. Yeah, we could probably do that. And we got players like Harry Kane, got players that can got Drew Bell in them, clutch players, okay, when we have possession of the
