Flight Attendants Reveal the Most Annoying Passenger Behaviors

Flight attendants share the top passenger behaviors that frustrate them, including disrespect, inappropriate touching, ignoring safety instructions, and failing to manage luggage. They emphasize the importance of using call buttons, following crew commands, and keeping the cabin clean for a smoother flight experience.

Things Passengers Do That Flight Attendants Hate. | Transcript:

Oh, stewardess, stewardess, sweetie, come here for a sec. Oh, man. Hey there, fellow travelers. Mark here with Wolters' World, and today we're here in London, and today we're going to talk about are the things that passengers do that really infuriate the flight attendants. That first thing I said, the oh, stewardess, the disrespect that people show to flight attendants when they're there to actually help you be on your plane, help you enjoy your flight, and also save your life if things happen badly, right? They're there to help you and keep you safe, and you show them that disrespect. You treat them like it's a 1950s and they're below you. That is the first thing that will get a flight attendant to not be coming

to you, not helping you out, because that is something you don't want to do, okay? So, have some respect with them. That's one of the biggest things out there. Second thing I would say that really upsets them is if you touch them. Not only in an inappropriate way, obviously, but when you're going by and you grab their arm or you grab their shoulder, you tap them, things like that. That's one thing that flight attendants specifically told me to mention, "Please, tell them to stop touching us." Look, if you need their attention, a nice ma'am, sir, that little call button, "Excuse me." That will work just as well, because if you grab them or something like that, that can throw them off. And if they're

pouring hot coffee at 30,000 ft with a little bit of turbulence and you're grabbing their arm, bad things can happen, all right? So, just remember, use the call button or say, "Ma'am, sir." That's going to be like a lot better than grabbing them. Another thing they don't like is when you ask them to put your luggage in the bin for you. Look, you packed it, so you should be able to lift it and put it up there. Now, I won't lie to you, some flight attendants are very happy to help out, but the thing is, for some of them, I mean, if you talk to flight attendants, they'll tell you they have friends that have had hernias and back problems

because they were lifting luggage that was too heavy, they couldn't get up there, and they got hurt. So, make sure if you're bringing luggage on the plane, make sure you can put it on. Now, the [snorts] thing is, if you're, you know, older, you can't do it, then that's a little bit different. But, if you're an able-bodied person, you should be able to put your luggage up in the overhead bins and not ask a flight attendant to do it for you. Oh, and another thing they really don't like is if you go barefoot anywhere on the plane, like anywhere. Not just your seat, but anywhere. Like, when they see people going into the lavatory and they've got bare feet, they're like throw up in their mouths. Like, in their

minds, they're like, "Oh my god, that is never water on the floor of the lavatory. We clean it up." And they do. The flight attendants do clean the toilets up, but you might be in that time they didn't get a chance to clean it up, AND THAT IS NOT water down there. So, please, do not go barefoot cuz they think it's gross. And think about it, do you want somebody putting their toe jam-filled feet up in your workplace? Of course not. Oh, and you parents, you do not get away from upsetting flight attendants. And I think that's one of those things that really Like, flight attendants, they don't hate children.

They like children. The children are cool. But, what flight attendants don't like is when parents stop parenting. Look, when you're on a plane, you need to make sure you're entertaining your kids, you're playing with your kids, you're talking to your kids, you're managing your kids, you're parenting your children. The flight attendant's job is to keep all 200 people on that flight safe, not to watch your kids. And the thing is, when people let their kids wander around, they go back in the galley, those wagon things, they can move around. They can I mean, they're sometimes hundreds of pounds. They can really hurt somebody. So, parents, if you want to upset those flight attendants, you can't just give them

some candy and say, "Oh, Junior's just being Junior." No. Baby sit your kids. Another little one that this has been mentioned to me by multiple flight attendants over the years is if you want to really irk them, but they'll still have a smile on their face, when they come by with coffee, tell them you want a regular coffee. What's a regular coffee? Cuz everybody's idea of a regular is different. Some people think that means black coffee, means just coffee. Other people think, "Oh, that's a cream and a sugar." Other people think, "Oh, it's just with cream." No. When you're ordering your coffee, say, "I want, you know, coffee, two sugars, one milk" or one cream. Like, have that.

Don't say regular. Don't say other things. Just be like, "Okay, this is what I want." They're happy to get you the coffee, but please, for the love of God, if you want to irk them, tell them you want a regular, and then tell them they gave you the wrong regular. Now, the next thing that's going to irk your flight attendant is if you don't listen to them when they're trying to tell you something that's going to help you out. You know, when you get on the plane and you see that person has an odd-size, you know, carry-on, and the flight attendant's like, "Hey, you want to make sure you put it in wheels in first, otherwise it won't fit." They're like,

"Ma'am, you want to put the wheels in first?" Of course, that person doesn't do it. They put it the wrong way, and then it doesn't fit, and then finally they move it around and it does, and the flight attendant's like, "Yeah, I told you that. I've been flying on the CRJ-900 for 10 years. I know how things fit in there." They know. They want to help you. So, listen to them. And that includes when they're walking around asking you what you want. Chicken or beef? They've done it for 25 rows in front of you. You have an idea it's chicken or beef. So, pay attention so they don't have to share that with you again, just to make their lives a little bit easier. And little things like, trying to put your coat in first before

you put bags in, cuz they're going to tell you time and time again, if you're traveling in the fall or the winter and people are having jackets, they always say, [snorts] "Put the jackets in last, cuz we can stuff those in the top." Don't put them in first, because it just takes up space and slows down the boarding process, which makes their lives worse. Cuz remember, a lot of flight attendants only get paid once the doors are closed and we go. So, the longer it takes for you to get in your seat already, the longer it takes to shut that boarding door, it's longer until they get paid. Now, another thing you might not realize upsets flight attendants is if you ask to move your seat before everyone's

boarded. Look, when they have their flight manifest, it says how many people are going to be on the plane. It says where people are going to sit. And remember, if you have checked bags, that is linked to your seat on the plane as well. And so, if you're moving before the doors are closed, that can cause trouble for them, whether they're counting seats or they know more people are coming, so you might be moving into somebody else's seat, and then we have that fight of well, the flight attendant said I could move here. I don't know why they let you sit in that seat that it has it on your boarding pass. So, if you do want to change seats, wait until the boarding doors close and everybody's on

board, and then ask the flight attendant if it's okay, because doing it earlier just causes problems for them. Now, another thing that would upset your flight attendants is if you are being rude to them and complaining about things that are out of their control. Look, you might not know this, but flight attendants do not control the weather. They do not control when the planes can take off and land. They cannot control your connecting flight that you're being delayed and you can't get to. That is out of their control, and when people take their anger out on the flight attendants, that's not fair. So, if it's something that's out of their control, don't take your anger out on them. It's not their fault. I mean,

it wasn't their plan to run out of pasta before they got to your row. That is just a fact of flight maintenance, all right? So, don't take it out on them. Be nice. Now, another thing you need to realize is if you're ignoring the safety instructions on the plane, that is going to upset them, because look, when they say, "Hey, we're going to go through a rough patch here. I'm going to have the flight attendants sit down as well, so everybody stay seated with your seat belt fastened." That means everybody needs to be seated with your seat belt fastened, because if you're up and about and all of the sudden there's bad

turbulence and you're flying around, they have to get out of their seat, which is safe with their seat belt on, and manage the turbulence and your body flying all over the place. You don't want that. So, when they give safety advice, follow it. If they say, "Get in your seat and put on your seat belt." you get in your seat and put on your seat belt, and you leave it closed. You don't think, "Oh, well, now I can get to the bathroom because nobody's there." No, no, no. It was a safety situation, stay seated cuz you're upsetting the flight attendants, and you're putting yourself in danger, but also the people around you and those flight attendants.

Now, another thing that irks the flight attendants is when they come by and they ask for trash, and you don't give them their trash. Now, one thing is if you leave a totally messy area with food all over, that's gross. No one's going to like that. That's just rude. That's inconsiderate in general. But, when they come by and they have the trash bag, they're like, "Hey, any trash?" Give them that trash cuz part of their job is to get the flight ready for the next flight. And that means we can't let everybody in till we get all the garbage out. So, if they get the trash from everybody, it makes life easier. So, don't think you're doing them a favor by stuffing all your trash in the

back of the seat. It's better to give it to them and let them get rid of it earlier than later on. Now, another thing that bothers flight attendants and other travelers when you're flying is if you have bad manners in the air. You know, the people that, you know, will open up the blind and blind people with the sun coming the window or the people that are fighting over the armrest and not letting people be there. These kind of things, the people that get overly drunk or overly intoxicated before they get on the flight, let alone they're on the flight. These kind of things, obviously, you don't want to do that. That's going to be something's going to upset people. But, also, that's

something's going to upset other people that are around you. And that's why one of the things they don't like is if they do ask you to do something and you don't do it. If they ask you, "Hey, could you please shut the shade?" you're supposed to shut the shade. I mean, that's part of the rules. You're supposed to follow the flight crew's instructions. It's like a it's a law, right? And so, you need to make sure you do this. Say, "Please put your seat up for landing." you need to do that. Put your laptop away when we're landing. These kind of things you need to do. And if you don't, that's going to kind of irk them. And believe me, the flight attendants talk and they remember those bad tourists and

they remember those bad travelers. And if you're on a similar flight a lot of times, they might be your flight attendant again. Now, another little like irksome thing that travelers do is one, I mean, you use the call button to get something. That's fine. That's what the button's there for. But, when your neighbor or your seatmate uses the call button and they come, like, "Hey, could you give me a coffee? Could I get a drink? Could I get a snack or a water?" And you're like, "Oh, I kind of want that, too." And then the flight attendant goes, gets it for them, and then they come back, and then you ask.

No. If your flight attendant's like, "Oh, could I get a water?" right away go, "Could I get a water, as well?" Cuz they don't mind getting it, but it's just one trip they bring it back to you as opposed to them going back and forth. And that's just a little irksome thing. I know people like, "That's so petty." But you know what? Little things like that, when you've got 400 people on the plane, can make a difference in their day. And then, there is the landing of the plane. And one of the most irksome things that flight attendants find is when passengers, when we land, they take off the seat belt right away and try to get into their bags before we're at the gate. Look, when we land, you have to

wait until we get to the actual gate and the seat belt sign goes off cuz sometimes the plane still needs to go like another 3 ft and they lurch forward, and if you're trying to get your bags out, that you might fall forward and your back could hurt somebody else. And that's why they want you to stay in your seat. And also, that means you don't rush to the front of the plane to be the first one out. If you're in row 40 and you're trying to be the first one out because you're like, "I'm not going to wait." You're going to cause problems and people notice those things and that really is one of those little things that really upsets flight attendants. So, if you're a flight attendant, let me know, what are some of

the things that irk you that passengers do on planes? But also, passengers, what are some of the things that flight attendants do that irk you? Let us know in the comments below and I wish you all happy travels and be nice to your flight attendants because not only are they helping you get to great destinations like here in London, they're also keeping you safe in the skies. So, thank you to all those flight attendants out there who helped us safely travel around the world. I wish you all happy travels. Bye from here in London.
