Hi Dove. I'm Detective Allison Callahan. Can I have you state your full name for the record, please? Dove Eliana Callahan. Thank you. It's been a while. Before we talk, I need to state your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be provided for you. Do you understand these rights? Yes. Are you willing to speak with me? Of course. It's you. I'm sorry about how your morning started.
Yeah, well, um I wasn't exactly expecting the police to show up at my house when I was steeping my tea. So, it was a bit of a surprise. We just needed you to come in and answer a few of our questions. Yeah, no problem. Are you familiar with the name Miles Scott? Yes. He's my boyfriend. Did you contact him in the last few days? Um well, I didn't contact him. He usually texts me, but I haven't gotten a text since last week.
Um I mean, I just assume he's busy or something with work. And he has a lot of those like down days. Hm. And how long ago did you last see him? Last week, I think. And where was that? At his apartment. And for how long, do you know? About an hour or two. Why are you asking about him? Did something happen to him? Oh, you're not aware? Not aware of what? Miles was found deceased in his apartment 3 days ago.
You found him dead? You How did he die? We're still determining the cause. Oh [snorts] I'm very sorry for your loss. Dove, I didn't realize that you didn't know. Who found him? His best friend Caleb. To our knowledge, they work together and Caleb reported not seeing Miles come in to work for 2 days.
He also has not been answering any of Caleb's text or phone calls, so he decided to check Miles' apartment. Oh my god. It's okay. Take your time. Dove All I need to understand is who was with Miles the last few days before his death and anything you remember leading up to last Sunday. We're going to get to the bottom of this, all right? Yeah. Uh okay. So, the last time you seen your boyfriend was last week at his apartment for about an hour or two.
Do you remember the exact date? Um Friday, I think. And why were you coming to see him? just check up on him, I guess. Check up on him? You haven't been in contact with him for a while? He was feeling a bit unwell for the last twoish weeks. So, I would check up on him every other day. I see. And Friday was the last time you seen him in person. You didn't contact him after that? Yeah. Uh I was busy with work, so I didn't have a lot of time.
[snorts] Mhm. And it wasn't a concern to you that your boyfriend hasn't texted you in 4 days? Like I said, he was feeling unwell, so I just assumed he was resting or something. It's okay. Everything's okay. You're doing great. I'm sorry. It's just crazy. He's dead. He's Oh my god. [snorts] Did Miles do anything unusual or go somewhere frequently in the last few weeks? Um I mean, just to his work and where would work be? Do you know? Yeah, he works at a men's shoe store, like a few blocks from the cafe that I work at. It's called District 9 Footwear on Pacific Holloway. And how many days does he work there out
of the week? Five days a week, morning afternoon two afternoon shifts. Do you know if anybody else came by his apartment? Uh no. Okay. Are you right? Do you need to take a break? No, it's it's okay. Are you sure? We can always stop. No, yeah, it's I'm fine. It's okay. [snorts] Tell me how you and Miles met. We met after We met when I was leaving from the cafe that I work at. I was leaving from my shift. And we bumped into each other.
We immediately got along. Started chatting and he asked me out a few days later. And after that to be continued. And how long ago did you first meet? 7 months ago. And when did you start dating? Around the same time. You mentioned you checked up on Miles every other day while he was sick. Would your last interaction with him both online and offline was last Friday. Why didn't you come see him after the 20th?
Well we had our fight, so I didn't text and call him cuz you know I was [snorts] waiting for an apology. And what was the fight about? It was nothing. Just stupid stuff. How was Miles' condition the last time that you checked up on him? He was weak and tired and sweaty. Just, you know, common cold symptoms. You didn't see any other symptoms? Any vomiting, nausea, breathing issues, maybe confusion or memory problems? Unusual behavior?
No, no, nothing too severe. Was he eating well? He's been eating less cuz he was sick. Mhm. And when you checked up on him, did you bring any medication or food, drinks? Yeah, like pastries and coffee from my cafe after my shift. And what time is your shift at your work? Also mornings. Till like two. So, when you came over to Miles' apartment after your shift, Miles was already home. You told me that he works mornings to afternoon, five days a week. He wasn't supposed to be at work? Yeah, no, he works from Sunday to Thursday, so Friday he was at home. And he was still working while he was sick?
Yeah, he came in sick any days cuz he has to pay the bills and rent. He was actually dodging his manager to not get sent home. You said you were waiting an apology from Miles. That was why you didn't contact him since last Friday. Yeah. Mhm. You don't think that's a bit too harsh if the argument was about stupid stuff? Especially when your boyfriend is sick. Unless something has changed. Has Miles said or done anything that was crossing the line last Friday?
He wasn't always like that. When we start when we first met he was caring and kind and very sweet. He would always listen to me and always watched me with such understanding. I would always think to myself, "How did I find such a perfect guy like that?" He would always bring me gifts and flowers and come see me at work and help me with anything that I needed. But then after he just became different. He first just got really irritated when I would say or joke about something like totally normal. And he would turn to me and he would ask if I'm okay or why am I talking like that.
He would text me every 10 minutes asking where I'm at. He would show up at my work and at my house and just get pissed off that I didn't reply to his message or I just missed his call and I would tell him that I was hanging out with my friends or I was at work or I was sleeping. And he did It's like he didn't care. And then the next day he would show up with flowers and apologized for his behavior. And then the next day, you know, same thing happened again. He started to get more grab my wrist whenever I would try to walk away. He would threaten me that he would get me fired or cut off my friends if I didn't answer him back immediately. And at his place and when I when he came over to my he would
slam doors and break things and grab me by It's okay, Dove. I'm here. I'm listening. He would grab me by my face and my neck and my shoulders and he would just scream at my face that it was all my fault and I was the one that was making me go crazy. So after 5 months of this, I ended things with him. But he didn't take no for an answer. He still showed up. He came to my house and blocked my path when I left my house and just demanded that I got back with him. And if I said no, he would scare the hell out of me. Did you tell anyone about this? Mom? No, I couldn't tell anyone. I was too scared. And ashamed.
Ashamed? Yeah. [snorts] Ashamed that I ever got involved with a man like that. And this started happening how long after you started going out? Like a month after. And then after 5 months you tried to end things with him. Yeah. So that all happened in the span of 6 months, but you said you've been going out for 7. Yeah. So what happened in the last month? I forgave him. Forgave him for what? For all his actions. I was too scared to leave cuz he wouldn't leave. So I thought that maybe I could try something differently. And what did you do differently?
If he demanded that I apologized, I apologized. If he wanted to come see me at any point of the day, I came. I cut off all my friends and I devoted all my attention to him. And it's it's started working. He would get happier and he became calmer and he hugged me more and started giving me gifts and flowers again. It was all just like the way it was it started. Dove. Miles has been keeping you scared. Emotionally attached and vulnerable for more than half a year. He has physically abused you. Yes, grabbing by the face, the neck, the shoulders is all forms of abuse. Why didn't you report him?
Because I told you I could I couldn't tell anyone. I was scared and ashamed. Anyone and the police are different. If I called the police, you would show up. And why would that be so bad? Because I couldn't bear having my sister see the filth that I was living with. The monster that I decided to stay with after all the torture he made me went through. [snorts] So I thought that maybe I could fix it all before you saw it. Fix him? Yes. And it started working. He became calmer and happier. But then we had our stupid fight on Friday and you just you He dies.
You still don't know how he died? We're still not sure. The lab results are still processing. But with no open wounds and visible blood, the possible cause can be the virus you mentioned and intoxication. Oh my god. I was taking care of him. I would show up. I didn't just leave him there. I was the one that actually sh- show up and when he was like that. He barely trusted anyone, so I was the only one who had to make sure that he ate something or rested and took something.
He didn't eat anything else except if I brought it, so of course I would bring him the same pastries, the same coffee from the same coffee place, so he wouldn't stress out even more. I thought I was so helping. I thought he was getting better. I didn't realize that his symptoms were getting worse. I didn't mean for them to get that bad. You didn't mean for his symptoms to get that bad? Yeah. Uh I didn't want his symptoms to get that bad. No. No, that's not what you just said.
You said you didn't mean for his symptoms to get that bad. That implies you were expecting something. No. I was I wasn't And you just told me that his symptoms were mild. Common weakness and sweating. So, how would you know that his symptoms were getting worse? What are you writing? From this point on, you need to be very careful with what you say. You're going to answer every one of my questions truthfully. Ali, did you bring anything else to Miles other than from your cafe?
Everything that I gave him Yes or no? No. Did you put something in his food or drinks? No. Did you insist he eats your food? Uh I just I told him to eat it. He liked the same stuff. What medication did you bring him? Uh just over the counter stuff. Name it. I don't remember. You don't remember what you brought your sick boyfriend? Tylenol and DayQuil, cough drops. I don't Did you measure the dosage?
Yes. Well, well, he took it by himself, so Did you ever give him more than the recommended? No. Do you know the risk of giving more than the recommended daily dosage? Yes. Did you ever wanted to stop leaving his apartment? What? Did you ever want him to stop leaving his apartment? I mean I guess sometimes if he wouldn't scare me at my work or my house. Did you ever want to control him? Only a few times. Just he would stop scary me. Did you ever feel really angry with him? Of course.
Angry enough to hurt him back? No. Angry enough to make him feel what you felt? No. To make him weak? No. To make him stay? No. To make him stop? No. You didn't ever, even for a second, think of revenge? That he deserved it? No. You answered my question before I even finished it. Duff, did you ever want to hurt him just the way he hurt you? I didn't want revenge. Then what did you want? I just wanted it all to end. And how?
I don't know. You don't know, or you don't want to say? I don't know how. But you found a way. You said he was becoming more calm. You started to take care of him, then he fell ill. Other than leaving for his work, he only ate and drank the things that you brought him. And while he was sick, and to your knowledge getting worse, you called that getting better. No, you're you're twisting it all. I didn't How am I twisting it all? I'm just reciting everything that you told me. Dove, tell me what I didn't think it would go this far.
He wouldn't leave me alone. He would stalk me at my own house, just push me, grab me, just scream at my face like I was nobody to him, and I just needed it to stop for just 1 second. So, I decided to fake it and play nicely to get him to leave. I thought that if he became more calm and less attached, that I could just slip out of the relationship. So, I thought that if he was just it was just calmer or wasn't as intense all the time, and [snorts] didn't have the energy to act like that, that he would leave me alone. And I just So, I just Not enough to hurt him. Just to make him slower and weaker, so that he would stop scaring me and showing up. I just I did not think it would get this bad.
Okay, I swear. I just thought it would like wear off or something before you I didn't give him that much. I didn't mean for it to go this bad. I swear I didn't mean for his symptoms to get this bad that he would What did you give him? I just needed it to all stop. Allie, please. You have to believe me, okay? I didn't mean for him to die, okay? I just needed him to stop because I was so scared all the time. I felt like I was trapped in the relationship and Tell them it was an accident. Tell them that I didn't know. Allie, please. Help me. You believe me, right? Do you know what you just did?
Did you not know what you were doing all this time? No. I told you I couldn't TELL ANYONE BECAUSE I WAS too scared. I couldn't tell Mom. I thought I could handle it all. Allie, please. I can't go to jail. I got into Yale. I'm going to college this year. I have a life. I have a future. Do you get it? I don't get to decide what happens to you, Dove. What you just confessed to me is involuntary manslaughter, possible second-degree murder pending.
Accident or not, you ended a person's life. So, you're just going to let them take me? Ali. We're done here. No, please. Ali, please. I'll be back in a few minutes. Do not leave. Do not talk to anyone. Do not let anyone take you away. Ali, put your hair up and put this on. Quick. Ali Calhoun, you're under arrest on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Miles Salt with possible charges of second-degree murder pending further investigation.
