Purple shore crabs can be found along the Pacific coast of North America, from Alaska to Baja California, Mexico. They primarily inhabit rocky shorelines. And are typically found underneath and between rocks high to mid-intertidal zone. They are typically deep purple or reddish-brown in color, though some individuals are colors such as greenish gray, yellow, or whitish. They have purple or brownish spots on their claws. Their legs are smooth and hairless. Their carapace is square-shaped and can be up to 2.3 in (5.8 cm) wide. There are three marginal points on each

side of their carapace. Females are typically smaller than males. Purple shore crabs mainly feed at night, consuming algae, eggs, detritus, and small invertebrates. Many birds prey on them. When approached, these crabs may stand their ground and bear their claws. A female can carry a large mass of fertilized eggs (up to 36,000) under her wide abdomen. The abdomen is narrow and triangular in males and wide in females. For more marine facts, click the SUBSCRIBE button!
