The scene is St. Louis, where those arch rivals, the Cardinals and Cubs, renew acquaintances tonight for the first time in 24 hours and the 2,533rd time in their long history. This year's edition of the Cubs has been MLB's streakiest team with a pair of 10-game winning streaks, but also a 10-game losing streak. The Cardinals, meanwhile, have been a pleasant surprise. Expected to be in a rebuilding year, they're instead playing a winning and appealing brand of ball in a town with one of baseball's richest histories. Outside of Pittsburgh. He flashes that into left. It's a base hit, little inside-out job to lead off the game for the Cardinals. If you having in a good place to fire like that, you'll be okay.

Got the job done. Wetherholt on his way to third. He is charging in there. It's first and third for the Cardinals. And here is Jordan Walker, who has had a huge resurgence from the prospect status that he had. He had been up and down from AAA for a couple of years, never really got in sync, but Oli Marmol told us that this guy has upped his preparation in a massive way. That's a ball to right field and a one-nothing lead for the Cardinals. And we saw all the gold gloves for the other group. Broken bat flare over the mound that sits behind the mound. Brendan does get an out, but the Cardinals pick up run number two.

Yeah, so it's just Horner What a pick by Burleson. Throw to second is high, so no tag there, but Burleson throws a life raft to what could have been a double for Horner. Great play right there. Wow. Anthony, you were down field level. What was your view of that? That ball came out hot. Yeah, it's all instincts right there, all reaction. I mean, what a play by Burleson there. Hang on to it. To shortstop, and that's past Dansby Swanson, who was bracing for impact of a chop right in front of him and behind the play. Weatherholt is in there safely. learning on a daily basis and they're all doing it together is going to pay

off huge dividends in the future. Popped up left field side. Happ on the move, and that's going to bounce in front of him. He never got there. A possible rundown, but the Cubs weren't aware at second base. Burleson staggered between first and second. It's three nothing Cardinals. ready against that. Up the middle. Base hit, just like you said, Anthony. Rizzo, one run is in. Two runs are home. It's five nothing Cardinals. The baby birds are searing line drives and plunking in parachutes at the same time. He has been using the breaking stuff together so well tonight. Yeah, I mean, he's doubling his fastball and using a breaking ball when he needs it to fool guys away. I mean, I think after that first inning he showed he set it down really well. And I mean, he's

out there in the fifth inning, so he's pitching well. first and then came up very quickly to St. Louis, but that ball is hit into right field, and Walker is there. Only give up three hits, and pass the ball now to the bullpen. Fly ball left field. Velasquez back at the track of the wall. It is gone. Alex Bregman unleashes the power. Home run number five, and the Cubs are on the board. And that was a ball that got to the backstop and kicked around for a while on a walk. As this ball ends up in left field, it's down for a base hit.

They were insane. Michael Conforto pinch hitting in the air left center field, that one hops the wall. Conforto sends Busch to third and the Cubs are in business here in the seventh inning against the Cardinals bullpen. Yes, aside from 3-0, there is no such thing as a fastball count in baseball anymore. And no challenges left is 3-2. He swung on and missed. He went with a two-seamer and Dobbins strikes out Swanson from 3-0 back. It's a missile at first base and a missile at third baseman. And all he's got to show for it is one for three. This goes to Mason Winn and Dobbins does a beautiful job of rebounding.

2-0, he's running. Throw down to second base, he is not in time. He is seven for seven in stolen bases in his rookie season. 3-0 gets away to the backstop on the walk and Wetherholt hits third. First and third for the Cardinals in Major League Baseball. Back to third, Bregman to second for one. On to first, that's a double play and an enormous one from Bregman to Horner to Busch.

Rack. One and two. On the ground at shortstop, Mason Winn has a cannon and he's going to use it. Doctor, that thing has a vapor trail on it. Might make him a pitcher. develop him as a pitcher. Yeah. He's a good shooter. 0-2 That's lined to center field and a base hit. Cardinals trying to build something again here. Dobbins just his 15th major league appearance. He's in search of that first save and it would have to be an 11 out save for Dobbins. It would actually be his first pro ball save at all. In Salem, Virginia and Portland and Greenville and Worcester, he never saved a game in the minors even. Or anything else.

Yeah. But nothing says summer like a ballpark that's electric. One and two. Ball tied in the air center field. Scotty is back at the track. He slows and makes the catch and the upstart Cardinals have won a series against their archrival Cubs two games to one and a brilliant performance by Liberatore and Dobbins with early offense gets the Cardinals the win. Albert Pujols. I'm here with Mason Wynn after a big series win against the Cubs. Mason, we had Aussie on the pregame show praising you. Uh tarps off, Busch Stadium seems to be back. Has it been as much fun? Have you guys have as much fun as it looks?

Yeah, I mean it's amazing. Obviously the energy out there is great, but you know, obviously in a Cubs series it's going to be great, but this stadium was rocking all three games. It was a lot of fun. Ollie was talking about your defense and how good it was and you showed that off on the Bregman play. I know how much you pride yourself in that. What's the preparation like to go into being such a good defender? Yeah, I mean it's just working every single day. You know, I got to play with Nido for a few years and you know, he taught me a lot of just about the day in and day out going to work and uh you know, we got Stubby Clapp hitting a

mean fungo, so you know, we just work every day just trying to get better. NL Central, every team over 500. You guys are young. Some people are saying you're over seeing expectations. Where do you guys assess yourself in the NL Central, especially getting into the stretch here? I mean, I like where we stand. You know, obviously it's a great division, a lot of great pitching, but you know, we've been competing all year and you know, I don't see anything changing I think the rest of the year. I mean, we

got a great group. We got a lot of guys that just want to work. It's been a lot of fun. Congrats on the big hit. Congrats on the win, bro. Best of luck.
