What is a Loon Calling Contest? The Loon Calling Contest is a one-of-a-kind event that is a bunch of people getting together trying to make the call of one of the most majestic birds with multiple sounds. UM LOONS ARE swimming bird. They have many calls, calls for distress, calls for mating, calls for just communicating with one another. And they're iconic to the lakes here in Maine. Okay. Anyone who wants to come down, watch, participate. Are you signed up? I am. And you do your best shot at any of the multiple calls that a loon makes for a sound.

Oh, I love them. I think they're one of my favorite birds, you know, just hearing them out on the lake, mostly at night. We live so close to the lake that you can hear them constantly in the summer. I think it's the ones that usually hit the highest notes multiple times and the night time call, the one that is you can hear miles on the lake. Some will use their hands and wet them and do the call through the hand. Kids practice all week just for that moment to come up.

This is my loon call. Anybody can participate. You don't even have to necessarily feel like you have a great call. I don't have a loon call prepared. You don't? No. Go. The crowd is very supportive. We're always really supportive. The first age category that we did was 8 to 12 years old. In first place is Sage. I won a loon calling contest. For our zeros to sevens, our youngest age category, first caller Charlotte. And our first place and our last call of the night, Connor.

Well, I don't know. I've been doing it since I was a kid and all my buddies have always been like, you got to go up and do the loon call contest. And I was like, finally, okay. I'll I'll do it one year. I was really excited. That was fun. So, I love loons, yeah. They're they're amazing creatures.
