Inside Apple Park for WWDC 2024 Siri's New AI Direction and Developer Reactions

A first-hand account of attending WWDC 2024 at Apple Park, exploring the new Siri and Apple Intelligence features. The event showcased a more practical, privacy-focused AI approach, contrasting with chatbot fatigue. Developer enthusiasm for AI tools was high, while parental controls received a muted response. The summary highlights the duality of excitement and caution around AI, and the importance of on-device processing.

Getting Real about WWDC and Siri: My First Time at Apple Park | One More Thing. | Transcript:

The future of Siri and Apple intelligence is taking shape right now all around me because the fate of how it works out is in the hands of the developers that are here at Apple Park like that guy or that guy. This is WWDC and for the first time I have seen what it's like to be at this multi-day event for developers at Apple's campus. I have been waiting for how Apple was going to roll out the next evolution of Siri. And it was presented in a way I really think speaks to this moment in time where so many people have this ick reaction to AI and folks are just turned off by annoying chatbot answers. And you might be one of the many people now who just feel you have too much screen time. But also, there are over 1,000 developers

here that make apps and they're excited about AI. There's this interesting duality, you could say, that happens in all of Apple's messaging. So, I sat out in the lawn to watch Tim Cook's final WWDC keynote as Apple CEO. And alas, the presentation did not end with one more thing. But if you watch this show, you know I always have one more thing. I'm Bridget Kerry. This is my first time attending WWDC in person. So, I want to share some of what it's been like as a reporter and what really stood out to me in a big news day about Siri and Apple Intelligence. The whole production of this event is fascinating. It's just massive and there is something about approaching the giant Apple Park campus.

It really feels otherworldly. It is a spaceship of where tech is going to be in the future, but it's still surrounded by nature. And if you have somewhere to be quickly, it does help to hop on a golf cart as I have found through all of the winding nature trails. And yes, I can say that while it is fun to get a swag bag of things like stickers and pins and talk about Siri, I can still touch grass. And no, I mean literally, I touched grass. This whole campus does help you remember why we as humans want the technology to make this a better world to enjoy. Now, I sat alongside some big online personalities and we were surrounded by developers, of course, and the energy here from the crowd is from the developers that are

cheering for different design tweaks. Things like having the window corners just look better or new tricks they found impressive with how Siri can sit inside a Vision Pro. But not everything gets cheers. There were no cheers in the audience about new parental controls. You see, Apple spent a lot of time in its keynote on all the new ways to fine-tune screen time controls for younger users, and that is a serious topic. But inside, I was cheering. That's what I wanted to cheer about. There's a lot of pressure on tech companies now when it comes to things like screen time and push backs in schools on what all of this tech is doing to the next generation of minds. But will developers get as excited as parents might get? because Apple does

need developers to get on board with adding more safeguards into their own apps. Now, let's talk about Siri because yes, there's a lot of tricks we're going to have to go over and there's questions on how it's all going to work as we play with these beta versions, but I appreciated how Siri sounds. And yes, I do mean sounds. you can fine-tune the speed and voice of Siri. But I also mean I appreciate how Apple created this new AI that isn't long- winded and overly emotive and not giving you these chitchat answers like most chatbots now that try to pretend they're human friends, but instead Siri is just giving answers. Also, look at how Apple presented the keynote this time. Apple does not do live demos in front of a

crowd. You know, it's all pre-taped, but clearly they wanted to convey a more authentic, less edited moment to audiences about what Siri can realistically do. And we saw the pauses of Siri answering prompts in the keynote presentation. And I'm told that is really how long it took to get those answers to appear. So clearly Apple is not here to rush quickly into AI for the sake of AI. and privacy is a big message they want to stay strong with, but they want to get developers to get excited still about the tools available. I am very excited to see what we can do with using our natural language to create shortcuts to make little cheats and code for ourselves. I think that's going to be fun. Especially what we can do

between apps in this way. But you know what? In all of these examples that Apple gave during the keynote, you didn't see Apple talk about how much you could use AI to pay for an Uber or order from a restaurant. If you think about Google's recent AI presentation, that felt very out of touch to me, like the only reason for AI was to spend money. It just felt refreshing to see Apple take a tone that was more about real world applications that stayed private on device and just helped you accomplish your tasks. A lot of this is still going to be in beta. I'm curious about the photo editing tools and how people will respond to using it. But by having some of these Siri smarts now inside the

camera app, this is all coming out in the fall. It's not here now, but when it does come out, people will get more used to having these AI smarts interact with their visual world. And of course, that is what gets us more into things like smart glasses. Maybe I'm saying this because it's the effects of sunny California and the new friends I'm making at these events. But the future does look bright for Apple if they keep on this path by stepping into AI in a way that keeps kids safe and keeps us all a little sane. While I'm here for a few days, I get to have some briefings with Apple and kind of understand a little bit more about how these changes will work. So, let me know what questions you have as we start to tinker.
