, let me tell you, Sony is not making this task easy for us. So, for many years, Sony has traditionally updated the PS5 about once a year. And some years they made it better, most years they made it worse, but this year they messed it up, because usually when a new PS5 model comes out, it has a new model number. So, 1000 changed to 1100, then 1200. It was very easy to understand which PS5 was perhaps better and which was better to avoid. However, this time, they supposedly updated the PS5 again. I say this in quotes because we'll see how much of an update this is in the special edition with Wolverine. So I went out this morning and bought a brand new regular PS5 Slim, which is also a
2115 version, to see if it's a 2025 vs. a 2026, if there are any significant differences, or maybe I just bought two identical PS5s and I'm a huge fool, which is also possible. Never underestimate the power of being a fool. Well, let's start with the limited edition PS5, which is supposed to be an upgraded model. Oh, okay, that's pretty cool. This is simply incredible. So, you want a copy of Wolverine? This is what happens when you turn on notifications and subscribe to a channel and hit the bell, my friends. Wolverine. Oh. Oh, man, look at this. It is actually translucent. Oho.
This is actually really cool. I think let's open the side panels and see if there are any other visual differences. So, we're going to remove the top shelves here. If you want, we'll just take them all down. A. Still almost like new. Almost new. Still almost new. Good. So this is.Hmm. It looks the same. How interesting. Oh. Okay, well, let's take a look at this one and see. Oh, brother. It's the same. So now, if you buy a PlayStation 5, actually, like most PlayStations over the last few years, there's a small coin cell battery inside on the motherboard. It is very important for the long-term operation of your console.
It helps keep time and stuff. And now, if that battery dies in your PS5 Slim, it's a pretty tough journey- dismantling almost the entire console to get to it. However, with last year's PS5 Pro they actually added a small battery compartment cover on top. So, it was very easy to replace. And I've heard that one of the easiest ways, if not the only way, to tell them apart is that you can see the battery here. It seems my search for a new PS5 turned out to be a little more complicated than I thought. So, it took a whole 2 weeks to find what I really hope is the correct version of the new PS5. I had to write, and I'm not exaggerating, to dozens of people to
send me a photo of the inside of their PS5 "Wolverine" so I could find the little CMOS battery that should be there. If it's so hard to find, are you sure it's real? Are you sure this matters? Alex, you don't have to. Why did you do all this You're going to take me to the edge now, okay? In short, after spending an amount of money I won't name even under torture on a camera, I purchased it in Ireland. First of all, I will confirm that she has covered thousands of miles. Um, it's a little wet too. What? Humidity? Oh, oh. Oh no. I don't like my boxes to be so soft. So, this is CFI-2116. Our current model number is 2115. Although I think the numbers 15 and 16 only refer to
the region and type of power cable included. Oh, oh, no, no, no, it's fine. Good. Everything is fine. Yes, everything is completely normal. Good. You wanted some moisture. Good. So, I have a confirmed PS5. We'll get this disgusting, smelly box out of here. We got the same PS5 as promised. Good. Nothing happened, friends. Good. Let's put that aside. And the answer is: Here you go. Good. OK. So, I can confidently say that they are different. As you can see, it's much easier to access it now on the new consoles Let's weigh them and see the
result. PS5 slim-2465 hours. And our version with the CMOS battery replaced-2472 hours. Very small difference. So, now it's time to test the power consumption. We do this every time Sony releases a new PS5. So we have the old PS5, or presumably the 2025 version, versus the new PS5, or the 2026 version, in Astro's Playroom. They are completely identical in all respects. We connected both consoles to power meters. Surprisingly, the results are almost the same. Technically, the new one consumes a couple of watts less, but, to be honest, this is within the margin of error.
There's a certain " silicon lottery" with each PlayStation, so some are slightly better or worse than others. We do this because Sony previously released new chips for the PS5 that significantly changed power efficiency. However, I suppose, given that they didn't change the model number, and the power ratings are almost identical, this is more of an update than a full-fledged upgrade. If we do all this only to find out that they haven't changed anything except the location of the battery, I'll be very disappointed. Very unfortunate. Okay, let's take this PS5 apart and see what's inside. While I'm sorting it out, we'll speed up the video so as not to waste your time. I'll be keeping an eye out see if there are any obvious changes
they've made. So far, the CMOS battery is the only thing that catches your eye, but I'm sure there's something else there. I hope there's something else there. Well, friends, there's no going back We reveal it. Now I will reach the point of no return, namely the removal of the liquid metal. This is a good time to remind you: don't try to replicate this at home. You will break your PlayStation. That's it. OK. Inside we have.Oh my God. Oh, that's something else. If you look at them side by side, you can see that the CMOS battery was previously soldered directly to the board. As you can see, it simply wasn't put here, so it's empty here. And if
you flip it over, they just added a little connector right here. So, this port is the only physical difference, but it's not a new motherboard, right? It turns out they already built it into the design. So, essentially, it's this little port that the daughterboard connects to. So, that's basically how the CMOS battery is connected to it. So, that's interesting. So, as far as I can tell, these boards are practically identical. So now the question is, what's the difference in the cooler itself? Maybe he's the same. I guess I would call it an improvement in usability. I think the CMOS battery solution is definitely a good thing.
I really believe that using less liquid metal will probably mean that your PS5 will last longer and there will be less metal leaking over time, but it's also a very minor difference. I wish Sony had made this distinction clearer by giving it a new model number, because the problem is that there's a new revision of the PS5 that I would have chosen if all else were equal at the same price, but you won't know it until you pick it up , remove the side panel, and see if there's that same little hatch that indicates whether the battery is accessible or if you'll have to take half the console apart to get to it in the future. But let me know what you think in the comments
below? Is this the PS5 you've been waiting for? Or would you like them to bring it back to $500 like the good old days? Oh, oh, that's right. Yes, me too, actually. Well, friends, thank you very much for watching. Don't forget to subscribe to the channel, hit the bell, and see you next time Sony does something stupid. Next week, probably. Maybe a week after that.
