Storm Chances Return to Mid Michigan on Thursday

Storm Chances Return to Mid Michigan on Thursday

Chief Meteorologist Chris East provides an evening weather update for Mid Michigan. After scattered rain on Wednesday, the focus shifts to Thursday with increased thunderstorm chances, especially in the afternoon and evening. While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated stronger storms are possible due to atmospheric boundaries. The weekend looks drier and cooler, but next week brings a return of heat and humidity, with heat index values potentially reaching the mid-90s to 100s.

First Alert Weather Update: Storm chances Thursday. | Transcript:

Today's evening First Alert weather show starts right now. And good Wednesday evening, Mid Michigan. Chief Meteorologist Chris East with your Wednesday forecast update. And we had some rain pass through parts of Mid Michigan today. Kind of an uneven result with that rain. Some areas saw plenty of rain, others not so much. Um, some of us saw rain on radar that just didn't quite make it to the grounds for much of the day. Maybe had a chance uh towards the end of the afternoon or perhaps early this evening. But right now, it seems like we're getting a bit of a break. Some areas getting a chance for the sun to maybe break through as we wrap up today. I wouldn't say it's widespread, but we've had a couple of

pockets of sunshine here and there. And as expected, we talked a little bit about this during our uh early evening newscast tonight, that for as intense as some of the showers and storms were off to the north and west uh that were moving through Wisconsin producing some severe weather a little bit earlier uh this afternoon and early this evening. It seems like for the most part that has wound down. Uh there appears to be a severe thunderstorm watch that is still in effect for some of those areas. Uh but if we turn all of the radar imagery off, it appears that there's only one severe thunderstorm warning at this point. And so a lot of that activity is starting to wind down. And we currently

uh do not expect it to have a big impact on us as we go through tonight. Now, the interesting thing about tonight is I actually think we have a better chance of some thunder during the overnight hours than what we did earlier today. It seems like we've got a little storm fuel moving in. So, I would expect as we go towards the uh early morning hours of tomorrow, we'll probably see some scattered showers and maybe a few rumbles of thunder popping up. We're still not expecting anything widespread. Uh as far as thunder is concerned and we're certainly not expecting um severe weather to be widespread or anything like that. Um I would say frankly our severe weather chance as we go through

tonight is pretty low. Uh but overall we are expecting as we head through the night uh that there will be a few rumbles here and there and we'll of course have uh meteorologist Matthew Mandro on the morning shift to cover you there. Um pretty much through the day tomorrow some periodic chances for rain the through the morning. It doesn't look like um rain during the morning is going to be a constant thing. Looks like it's more of a uh scattered or widely isolated type of rain. But I think once we head towards the afternoon, uh, we will have a chance tomorrow to heat up a little bit more. I think there's the possibility um that we could see thunderstorms become a little bit

stronger tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow early in the evening. And the one thing that I do at least want to bring your attention to is we are in the general thunder category from the storm prediction center. So, if I pull this up just so I don't have to take it off the hour by hour, we are in the general thunderstorm category for the Storm Prediction Center for tomorrow. But I do think there's at least a careful eye that needs to be on some of these storms tomorrow. And the reason I say that is because tomorrow we've got what appears to be, let me see if I can back it up and find maybe a little bit better of an image.

Um, so notice right here, it's a little tough to see. Let me see if I can put a pause point here. Um, but notice how we've got some of these collision areas kind of in this region right here. You've got winds that are coming off like Hiron. You've got winds that are coming the other way and you've got sort of these wind arrows colliding right here. The way our atmosphere looks tomorrow is the wind is not necessarily overwhelming. It's not looking like a day that is prone to severe weather, but what we have is we have the winds in general that we see every single day, just our natural surface winds. Plus, we have lake breeze potential for tomorrow. And then we also have thunderstorms that are developing

and release a lot of air as well, those cool gusts that come out, the gust front. And so what that is going to do is leave these little boundaries all over the place. And so we've got a couple of different things in motion and if some of those ingredients come together just right and the winds along those different boundaries interact occasionally we can get some spinning and so I would say it's a low chance. I don't want anyone necessarily overly concerned about this but I do think we in the weather department need to have a careful eye on some of these storms and how they develop for tomorrow. Excuse me. I'm not expecting, you know, absolute chaos or anything like that. And it would take the exact right situation for that to happen. Uh but

it's something that the National Weather Service office in Gaylord mentioned in their forecast discussion this afternoon and it seems like something that is at least worth watching. Um I don't expect this to be something that happens everywhere. I think this is something that may be a little bit more likely in areas that are more prone to lake breeze boundaries. So places like the thumb, places that are downwind of Lake Hiron. So Corbin asked the question, you know, is there a chance near New Lother? I would say that area u would have an even lower chance than already a low chance to begin with. So again, I'm just highlighting that as more of a be on the safe side kind of thing. Uh but I

wouldn't also be surprised if we get through tomorrow without any warnings at all. Uh but it's a day that I think kind of reminds us where you can never be too sure. Uh for instance, we had, you know, an event a couple weeks ago in Freeland that happened with just rain showers. It doesn't necessarily mean this is going to be a repeat of that. Um but it's just talking about how even some of the smallest chaotic environments can sometimes lead um to something interesting. And so uh we'll watch those. I would say if we are going to get strong storms tomorrow, I think it would be between about 2 and 7 2 and 8 somewhere in that time frame which we will of course be staffed already. Um so if anything does pop up that you need to

know about we will be here. Um, other than that, we should see things wind down pretty quickly into Thursday night. It seems like once we get past 7, things really start to taper off and then the rest of the week looks pretty good. Um, once we get to Friday and Saturday, it seems like things really dry out. Our temperatures will likely still be on the cooler side Friday compared to average, but still feel pretty nice to most of us. And then on Sunday, we start turning up the heat a little bit. And of course, that will be the heat that takes us into next week. And so the heat that we have next week, uh, plus the possibility of humidity, um, is going to bring the potential for some heat index values that are pretty

gnarly. So, we're talking about the potential for heat index values around 95 or potentially even a little bit greater. Here's what some of those temperatures look like going into next week [cough] is we've got a lot of days that are in the upper 80s to near 90 all the way through Thursday and Friday and then we get a little bit of relief going into Saturday. Uh but one thing that I do want to show you if I can pull this up because it shows a little bit better. um on our forecasting software this far out in time. Anyway, um I want to show you what the heat index could potentially look like next week.

we'll come back to that. I want to take a look at something else. One moment. I apologize for the Well, um, things are kind of trending up a little bit. So, one second while I get I kind of want to take a look at all three of these before I show it. Well, there's some consistency here. All right. So, that's interesting. We're finding out some of the latest data together. So, here's a look at the potential heat index values that we could see next week some of our heat and humidity when you combine the two. So, here's a look at that right here. Now, this is from the GFS model, and this is Tuesday afternoon.

You can notice we've got some of those values that are approaching the upper 90s to near 100. And originally, I was going to show you the European model because that one's typically a little bit more reliable this far out. Um, but what's interesting about this is the GFS American model, and this is for Tuesday, Tuesday afternoon, is the GFS is usually a bit cooler. And so if the GFS is still producing heat index values like this, when it's known to be a cooler model, um, that I think carries a little bit more weight when you compare it to something like the European model, which I'll pull up so you can see it here. This one's a little bit warmer.

We've got more values that are closer to 103, 102, and the Canadian is even a little bit warmer than that. The Canadian's up closer to about 104, 105. Now, that is not your actual temperature, but that is your heat index. And so that is pretty noteworthy going into next week. Um, let me show the 7-day forecast because there is one hangup that I do want you to know about and it's the possibility that while we do have those temperatures, we also have the possibility of rain along the way. And so I think there is a very high floor for our temperatures next week. I think they're going to be near 90 regardless. But as far as what is the ceiling going to be? I think that is the question. Can we get actual temperatures in the mid90s?

And if we can get actual temperatures in the mid 90s, that gives us a better chance to get heat index values that are closer to 100. And now this is important every week that this happens. It's not saying it's unheard of, but when everyone's going to be busy with Fourth of July and they're going to be out and about trying to enjoy a lot of those activities that are around next week, it is going to be important to take care of yourself. Not necessarily a doom and gloom type scenario. We deal with a stretch like this every single summer, sometimes multiple times, but heat is the number one severe weather hazard for a reason because it can sneak up on you if you're not careful. So, u just know

that next week could be very hot. Next uh very stressful when it comes to the heat. And also there is the potential that some rain from time to time could at least cool us off and prevent some communities from getting too hot. Uh but I think we're looking at a situation where next week we're probably going to have to raise some heat awareness. Um and I think we could be looking at multiple days where we've got heat index values that are close to 95, maybe a little bit more. Um so we'll focus on that as we get a little bit closer to next week. Um, not much rain in Reese today. Yep, Denise. One of those spots that didn't get as much as everybody else, and there were more than a few who had rain on

radar today, and it just never got to the ground. Uh, Mark, I see 90 starting Tuesday through at least Thursday. What does the temp forecast look like beyond next Thursday? It's interesting that the West Coast will have cooler than normal temperatures starting next week. Yeah, pretty big pattern flip across the area. Mark, I think this trend has some staying power. Um, I don't necessarily think we're looking at 90 every day. Uh, but I think the above average pattern could probably last beyond Thursday. Um, I think there's potential we could have a really hot start to the month of July. Hernando didn't get much rain in Akran today. How much for tomorrow, Hernando?

I think the scattered nature of the rain makes it hard to say. I think there will be some places that probably get some good downpours and maybe pick up a quick inch or two and then I think there are a couple others who might not get much of anything. So, it's really tough to say uh for any one spot tomorrow just because of the scattered nature of it. Uh but there is potential for heavy rain. It's just whether your town gets it or not. Uh hope no concern about any bad weather um severe-wise for Mount Pleasant tonight. Maybe some rumbles of thunder. Um h he's right, Barbara. I've been enjoying this stretch. I'm cool with 80s. 90s is, you know, I can deal with

it, but it's not my favorite. I think upper 70s, low 80s, that's kind of my sweet spot. If I had a preferred temperature range for the summer, upper 70s, low 80s. But I know a lot of people have been enjoying those low to mid70s recently. Yeah, Ethan, I would hope that those temperatures back off from moving, too. Anytime I've moved in my life, it always seems like it's the hottest week of the year, so I can understand that. Um, but yeah, that's that's pretty much it for the stream tonight. So, um, we've got a chance for some showers again tonight, maybe a few rumbles of thunder. Our chance for thunder tonight is a little bit better than it was

during the daylight hours. But, um, as far as that severe weather that was over in Wisconsin, a lot of that has started to fizzle out and some of it again is not even moving in our direction. Some of this will pass by to our southwest. Even some of these showers look like they're trying to break apart and take different uh paths here. So, rain is possible overnight, but doesn't necessarily have to be as intense as what we saw uh to the west a little bit earlier today. So, we will watch storms tomorrow just to be on the safe side. Uh stay a little bit more alert. um kind of keep an eye on things from about 2 to 7 tomorrow afternoon and early evening and we'll see if uh if storms behave themselves. But until then, hope

everyone has a great night. We will see you back on the stream for tomorrow. And until next time, have a wonderful Thursday. We're almost to the weekend. Thank you for watching today's stream.
