Wildland Fire Training Intensifies as Northeastern Ontario Prepares for Summer Threats

Firefighters from across the Northshore completed a two-day wildland fire training seminar hosted by Elliot Lake Fire Department. The course, presented by the International Association of Firefighters, focused on protecting structures from wildfires, urban interface response, incident command, and strategy. With wildfires posing a growing threat to northern communities, the training emphasizes preparedness. Meanwhile, the Queen Street Cruise in Sault Ste. Marie, one of the region's biggest summer events, kicks off Friday, honoring its late founder Gary Tinsky.

Good morning northeastern Ontario. | Transcript:

Good morning, Northeastern Ontario. I'm Ian Campbell. Firefighters from across the Northshore are just wrapping up an intensive two-day training seminar in regards to wildland fire training hosted by the Elliot Lake Fire Department. The training involved protecting structures from wildfires. It's being presented by the International Association of Firefighters. It'll focus on urban interface response, incident command strategy, and tactics. It also comes at a time where wildland fires are a growing threat to communities across northern Ontario. Yes, Elliot Lake is in the wilderness and we are surrounded by trees. Uh now we don't quite have the trees that you would have say in Fort McMurray and northern Alberta with the, you know, the

black spruce and stuff like that. We have a lot of hardwood here which kind of helps us out a bit. Thomas says it's always best to be prepared in the event of an emergency. The training involved 10 1-hour online modules, a day of classroom instruction, and a day of hands-on field training in Elliot Lake. We're just days away from one of the biggest summer events of the social season in Sue St. Marie. This year's Queen Street Cruise kicks off Friday night and runs throughout the weekend with a lot of events planned. The classic auto show that showcases vintage cars, trucks, muscle cars, anything on four and two wheels draws

people from all around the region. This year will also be bittersweet. It's the first year without founder and chair Gary Tinsky, senior. We're doing a lot of things. There's a lot of things that are planned. Uh I have my dad's face on the poster this year. He's on the front of the program. Um he's on the t-shirts. Uh the car community is um uh they're very tight-knit. Um again, like we want to make it as inclusive of a show as possible.

Sounds like they've got a lot of fun things planned. Again, the Queen Street Cruise gets underway Friday and runs all weekend long. Here's what we're looking at for the week ahead. The FIFA World Cup is underway. And not only is Canada a host country, our team is in the mix. We'll check in and continue to check in with soccer fans across the region as Canadians and football fanatics across the Northeast celebrate. And we're getting closer and closer to the last day of school. Do your kids have their summer plans booked yet? Are there still spaces even available? Summer camps, activities, and tourist hotspots are getting ready for the student onslaught. And that's a look at your morning in the Northeast.
