Steve Harvey Offers Advice to Parents Whose Adult Children Refuse to Leave Home

A parent of three children, aged 23, 21, and nearly 14, seeks Steve Harvey's advice on encouraging adult kids to leave the nest. The older daughter is in college and has changed majors, while the son is still figuring out life and has a new baby. The parent wants to know how to help the younger child see the older siblings become independent adults.

Hey Steve: My Adult Children Won’t Grow Up! | STEVE HARVEY. | Transcript:

- I've got three beautiful children. One is 23 years old, the second is 21, and the last is 13 going on 14. So we're at the stage where we have our kids at home, but we really want them to kind of leave the nest. So my daughter's seven years into college, moving on to her third major. And then I have a son who's still trying to figure out life, has a new beautiful baby and we've been blessed with that baby. And then we've got a younger one who's in that prepubescent, crazy middle school age year. And so I want him to see the other two kind of grow up, become adults and move out. And so my question to you, Steve, is how do I make sure that the 13-year-old coming up is going to do right

and move out just like the other two will eventually? Are we on the right track? - No. You're going to have to make an example out of one of them because that's the only way the 13-year-old is going to get it. Which one do you feel most comfortable doing something to? Which one do you want to do? - I'm going to have to think about that one, Steve. - No, let's talk about it now. Which one do you want to do? Which one pisses you off the most? Oh yeah, - That one I can't - Is it the daughter?

- That's probably the daughter. For the women, it's always the daughter. - You butt heads with your daughters. Love your sons, you butt heads, but you love them all. - Yeah. I don't have that problem. It's the other way around for me. My daughters run over me, my sons ain't got nothing coming. I can handle them. So how about this right here? How about putting some time constraints and restrictions on the daughter?

You can't change your major no more. We got how many more years before she get out? - She'll get out soon. She's going to figure it out before then. - No, no, no. See, she's figuring it out with your money. See, sometimes you have to help kids figure it out. - She's been paying that though. She's been a big girl about it. - Oh, she's been paying on college. - Yes. She's going to work. She knows. Exactly. - Okay. We'll stay in college next year. I mean, that's cool.

- Exactly. - Okay. So you're not going to make an example out of any of them? Probably not, - Steve. - In all - Honesty. - So then there's no solution to your problem. Everybody in here tell you, you got to make an example. You got to put some type of constraints, some type of consequences. Something has to happen. If they don't have constraints or consequences, they just do what they want to do. It's - True.

- They're just kids, man. - You right. - She'll stay in school as long as it ain't no consequences for staying there. - That's - Right. Now the 21-year-old, he had a baby, that's life. It happens like that. That's right. So they always going to be in your life. My children in their late 30s, they still need stuff from me. - Yeah. - And the only reason they need it because they know I got it. That's right. They don't need love from me. They need money.

My daughter never come over the house, dad, I just need a hug. No, they come over, hug me, then ask for money. That's all it is. And I understand that. Huh? - Mine asks for food. - Yeah, that's it. My boys, they, they come over to the house too to eat. Yeah. They can eat all they want. - And then go. - Yeah, they have to go. Because they ain't got no more rooms at the house. We done turned. One of their rooms is Marjorie's hair salon.

The other boy's room is a spa, and my other son's room is my new cigar lounge. - Yeah. - So when they come over there, they ain't got nowhere to stay. Get your ass out. - So maybe my plan is to leave the house and move to an apartment with one bedroom for my husband and I. - You going to leave your house? - No, as they get older, the house is going to be. We're going smaller, so - Oh, you will downsize.

We won't have space for anybody to come back. - Yeah. - That's the plan. - That's your plan. Downsize your life for they ass. You're right. - It might change. - You've been working your whole life. You deserve to have - - That is true. - Put their ass out. - Does anybody have this friend? - I like that suit. - Thank you. I like your suit too. - Yeah. - She's gorgeous. She's successful, articulate, well educated.

We've been friends for 21 years, went to high school together. But there's this problem. She, she's a habitual twerker. And so she's single. - She, she what though? - She's a habitual twerker. So it's, it's embarrassing, Steve, because - - Oh, she's a habitual twerker. - She twerks everywhere. - What? Boy, I misunderstood what you said. She got a problem. She twerk. She's a habitual twerker.

- Habitual twerker. So we can be anywhere. Family, friends, gatherings. We could be at the mall. She was at a business trip in South Africa twerking on Table Mountain. It's embarrassing. And she's asking me for advice about relationships. I have bachelor friends, but I'm embarrassed to bring them around her. So I don't know how to break it to her, but should I say something to her or should I just let her twerk on? - You serious? - This is a real thing. I don't follow her on social media because the twerking was a little much on my timeline.

- She twerk on social media. - Yeah. And she's a professional. She's a, she's a professional, so yeah. - The lady over there, is she a stripper? No, what? She, she has like a real job? - Yeah. She has a very powerful, you know, influential job, career. - And she wants to meet a man. - She wants to meet a man. - Ain't nobody finna. Look, man. And your friends, you can't bring them around because you - Embarrassed. Yeah. The whole friend circle's embarrassed. So I don't bring any new people around her, but she's like the last Mohican

that my female friends is looking for. - What is wrong with her? I don't. Dumb ass person just, you know, I'm just, ooh, I'm, oh, just. Ooh, girl, let me go on down here to Walmart and just start. Are you serious, man? - It's literally like that. Yes, I'm serious. I don't know. Like we think it's like social anxiety or like. I don't know what it is. I'm not a psychiatrist, but I just - - She's crazy.

She ain't got nothing to do with anxiety. Ain't a woman in here understanding this. Who just walks and just busts out twerking? You know how much effort it take to make one half of your ass do something that the other half ain't doing? Now hard, you got to focus to make this half of your ass do the direct opposite. I told Marjorie once, I said, "Baby, you ever tried twerking?" She said, "I ain't got time for that."

Hey man, and you've never talked to her about it. - No, I'm like the most direct of the friends and they tell me don't do it because they don't think she can take it, but I just - - What up? What is it she can't take? Hey listen, my friends don't want to meet you because they all think something's wrong with you. You go to South Africa and you twerk on top of Tabletop Mountain. One of the most beautiful scenes in the world. Tabletop is like the end of the world.

It's the furthest point of the continent of Africa and you go up there to twerk. What's wrong with you? Nobody can't carry you over to my mama's house. Can't take you to my mama's house and your dumb ass start twerking. Dog, we're sitting up here. We in church. You walking around putting your offering in. What's you twerking for? You, look, I think you should tell her. I think you should tell her that's why she's still single and you predict that's why she'll continue to be single because ain't nobody taking that to the house and you twerking on social media.

Ain't nobody fixing to do that, man. You should tell her. Wasting your time. You're stupid. Hey, you made it to the end of this video. I got a lot more that you're going to enjoy, so just click to watch the next one and make sure you subscribe to always know what's happening.
