it seems like a war zone or something like all the buildings are completely cracked and like falling apart literally look like missiles have hit them most welcome to Sagal dear Capital City here the most western point of Africa feels a lot different so far to quite a few of the African countries I've visited but right now we're in the bank center of the city we're just going to head to what I've been told as the ghetto not my words a local man's words that we're going to be meeting up with so let's head into the ghetto and then we'll see what other parts of the city we can discover today
thank you bye we've arrived at this local market here they selling old couches it's kind of your classic African Market a lot of these clothes come from donations from overseas so a lot of the uh clothes that uh get put in clothing bins around the world you know you'll see at your local supermarket or something a lot of them actually get sent to Africa and for the idea a lot of them come with the idea of getting donated but that's just a lot of the time is not how it works they get cied off and then the high quality ones get divided and bought for Mery good huh what' he say what's he saying money yeah but un worthy yeah so they'll divy up the clothes and then sell them so yeah a lot of like charity uh clothes Gathering uh is not
actually donated Okay so we've just arrived in the ghetto as my friend calls it here we are with uh Biggie yes what's up biggie named after who exactly after bigest small the rapper call CRI same number same it's all good you're a rapper right I'm a rapper yes Bigg's going to be my right-and man here in uh sagga we're going to go and explore around like this is like your neighborhood right my neighborhood yeah okay sweet so we're just entering the cattle market that's gigantic here massive cattle market apps just me what about you guys just me all right hey me okay thanks appreciate nice to meet you he put his arm around me to take a selfie but then he just uh held the selfie camera up to my face and just took it of my face all right I'm following you through
here what's the tactic so we're here with Sor who's a local uh cow herder here how much uh do these cows sell for they must be quite expensive € 1,000 1,000 whoa that's a status thing right yeah do people not get injured because like I've seen cows like running around they're not unpredictable can you not get hurt wow sometime like new cow that came from the wild that are new here sometime they are violent M and he has witnessed some people that got like there you go severely hurt cow yeah this is actually sketchy I don't have the energy of the locals to scare off the cows and they're swinging their horns left and right crazy you know one like threatened me before one of the cows that went like this to
me yeah sometimes they can be dangerous yeah so uh Sika uh you said that you want to leave senagal uh hey man you good so CA these are your cows are from Mali Niger morania they come here and them they take care of them out after to sell them so this is like an international market of cows from all over West Africa yes how's the cow business in 2025 nowadays life is hard like they spend all their life here every day they come but the business is not going well maybe they want to have something a better business in the future they doing it because they don't have choice and it's the only thing that they know you mentioned earlier that you want to go uh to another country where do you want to go anywhere where he can
have peace and money can you not get peace and money in synagog is a peaceful country but not enough money to survive because he has kids wife to take care of Merc so we've just arrived at Biggie's house here and he's got a really cool project here with some of the local school kids let's go check out this house you can see these holes in this roof one night apparently biggie was asleep and he hear this massive collapse of concrete comes out and see all these buildings have collapsed but you're saying that people are still living in here are still living dead yeah and you thought they would leave but they just
stayed there right yeah because they don't they cannot afford to pay to another place right so they get this place for free even if they know that it's risky to live here but they don't have Choice anytime that part also might collapse so we're actually going to go inside the buildings that we saw the ceiling had collapsed so you can see we're inside now and just look still people living in here and look this has got to be this has got to be on like the brink of collapse again right cracks everywhere she's living here with her kids yeah I mean I feel scared just being here for 5 minutes W us we are not safe you know yeah and you're saying that the lady here lives with her kids and her husband abandoned her husband abandoned her and got another wife oh
wow yeah now she's living here and with her kids and like this is where we are look it's this was a room and so where are they sleeping now inside the house so this is one of the bedrooms just being in here for you know 20 minutes or so it's like I kind of want to get out so imagine living here day in day out with your children after your husband's abandoned you know the whole house might one day and yeah I would say not might it's not a question of if it's a question of when right when yeah not only does the roof collapse and they're at risk of getting crushed but then all the rain gets in and floods the place like when the water comes all right we're going up to the Terrace but I don't know about you
I'm a bit nervous now um look at this is this safe to walk on I don't think it is yeah but let's take the risk I mean I don't want to put you first you sure yeah that looks so sketchy manate mate you're loose this whole Terrace is on a lean and obviously dude you're standing on cracks you always live life on the edge the woman who lives here with the family and everything didn't want to be on camera that she was very pleasant and everything and um biggie is her neighbor so he helps her out a bit meanwhile this guy's just living on the edge this would be a good place to film one of your rap videos oh yeah show the hood traveling the world one of the most important things for me is having access to Internet when arriving in a new
destination this takes out so much stress and eliminates so many headaches when you can get there you can look up currency information have access to any necessary apps to make sure you don't get ripped off by taxi drivers and Lord knows I've definitely overpaid many taxi drivers in my time that's where today's sponsor comes in Holly is an eim company a virtual SIM card that downloads directly onto your phone it's available in 214 destinations and 167 of those destinations are available for unlimited data which is so good when you're out traveling during the day and you don't have to worry about running out of data when you need to get a ride or if you're looking up directions more
importantly on Google Maps for example maintaining a solid internet connection is vital in many times of travel 204 destinations have hotspot capabilities so for example in Sagal I've been using Holly and it's been an absolute Lifesaver and so many ways including being able to use the Hotpot for my laptop use and in Sagal I've had coverage all over the country dear Lego Rosa and other cities and other destinations in senagal as soon as you buy the ASM you can use it immediately I always say it's best to buy it and install it onto your phone before you arrive in the country that you're traveling to for example me with Sagal this time and then you just activate it as soon as you land in the plane you can
have access the data and start making your Arrangements away from the airport so today Holly is kindly offering my followers 5% off so you use the code Indigo traveler and get 5% off any eims and topups from then on so huge thank you to Holly let's get back to the video so these guys go around collecting precious metals and buying phones and stuff like that broken computer you know those kind of devices they sell it to International companies every day they go around and them who try to buy from people look at you're a natural born Shepherd right now in the morning they go out and then they come back in the evening they know really so they the owners let them go and walk in a herd and come back people don't steal them
no so this is one of the more deprived neighborhoods City you see how it looks like here and there and families are still living there you know people are very poor here some sometimes they have one meal a day we're going to go to a really rich neighborhood later today right it seems like a war zone or something like all the buildings are completely cracked and like falling apart and there's not that much sign of life just every sof and you see like a woman or a kid coming out of these like buildings that like literally look like missiles have hit them or something you can even see here in the slam there's a big contrast they put the effort in to put in the windows on the balcony and then people are apparently
actually living underneath this Rubble believe it or not that's what they've put on the roof to try and stop the rain getting in so you lived in this neighborhood your entire life biggie entire life yeah wow same house same house so here you can see a prime example of the houses most people in Dakar live in housing like this so it's a mix of like see that's a newer apartment building behind me and you have these uh old abandoned and run down oh please you're good Mery uh and uh you can come through here and you can see more flooding so it's kind of a mix between you know this is obviously worst case and then you have like what we saw with that lady there living in the really dangerous house and then everything in between but majority
the houses look pretty good right like in they're in good condition like your house and things and the family that was living here I know them the flooded abandoned one and after the flood came and they left is the flooding getting worse every year yeah getting worse what do you think that's from maybe climate change right these are actually the pumps that they Ed to pump out the water can see one's hooked up there and they try to pump it out obviously that one's the lost cause it's got reads growing through it but that just kind of shows the state of how the world's changing and everything it's really quite something to see so here we are on the rooftop and then over here we have tents because biggie is actually
the Ambassador for couch surfing for the entire country of Sagal so people from all over the world who want to travel you know on a low budget or they even just want to live at a Local's house to feel the culture and they come and stay here so there's even a couple different nationalities and Austrian staying at the moment tell us a little bit about the couch surfing and everything and how you got into it I was watching uh TED Talks okay on YouTube yeah and one I think he's Brazilian he was talking about how he traveled the world with a tight budget right and then he mentioned C surfing on his video uh after watching him the same night I created my C surfing profile oh wow and few days later I start getting requests
wow and since then I never stopped I hosting hosted lot of people wow from all around the world tying reach out to me had interview oh yeah and I end up being the Ambassador oh wow congratulations yeah thank you so you teach your students up here this is a small classroom where I give lessons to students from this neighborhood it's not only me but me and two other teachers one teacher teaches a French another one MAF and me I do English also we do like sport the boys do football soccer on Wednesday and weekends with a soccer teach coach the girls do they play sport now we created um a team for girls it's a big challenge because in Sagal girls don't do sport in general but we have the idea like to create a club
for girls and then make them want to do sport and the all white one was bought by one of my guest that's stay here for a long time oh really cou Surfer couch Surfer in Africa we have that belief if you have all white sheep in your house that can stop the badl got it that is coming to the family biggy does a lot here for the community it's a pretty cool location but um it would be great because it can actually get quite chilly in the evenings so what he's wanting to do is to um maybe seal this up a bit and then also through here we have the goats here uh but we also have this room and we'd love to make this into another classroom right and then get more tables and another board right
like to make two classrooms that's what I want for this year you could teach like French in here English there someone doing math and me I'm doing English yeah you see we don't need to wait they finish and you know it would be really cool to turn this roof of his house here into like a more kind of a better infrastructure for the kids and things right I have the space but I need like materials clean up the floor and put some shades in and so that's your only light and when it's dark it must be hard for the kids to see right yeah at night they can see but not properly but when the light we move it here it's perfect if you don't no worries but if you have you know an
extra few dollars $ 10 $20 or $5 even it makes a big difference we'll keep you updated with what happens cool I'll leave the information down below and if you want to chip in house Sagal the name of the center Mercy house Sagal cool awesome man all right Mercy We R in this other area you can see the streets are a lot different and nice trees and high gates with Barb Wire on them and things like that it's like a different country just a 40-minute taxi ride same city here's a quick reminder of what the slum was like quite the contrast with those beautiful trees yeah and the streets are so clean we come through the this shopping mall and is that a cinema there yeah nice prominade there bit different to the other side of town definitely
yeah very different the neighborhood that we just went through with the amazing houses it's like politicians businessmen living there yeah how hard is it for somebody to become self-made from the neighborhoods that we started in to living in those can you come from those neighborhoods and make it to the top you can be from a rich family right and then maybe you inherit money from your father or your parents and then you end up living yeah or you can start from nothing do business and become a rich person do you know many stories of people coming from the ghetto and making it out here on this side of town yeah you do yeah right so it's so there is a path it's possible but not very common but it's possible and thanks to music or
wrestling uhhuh they made it right become rich and then buy houses somewhere around here and when I see these people I'm very happy because 10 years ago they didn't have anything see they were struggling that motivates me right that maybe one day me also I will buy a house the statue is like over 50 m tall and uh believe it or not it was built by a North Korean company that builds statues uh it's the largest statue in Africa and uh it's gigantic and you can see that it's similarity between some of the North Korean ones they look very similar to the ones I saw in North Korea when I visited there you can actually go all the way up to the top and come out the top of his head there's like a viewing platform
so the statue behind and then amazing view of Dak out there pretty wild and this is built by the North Korean Company North Korean government it's gigantic they sure know how to make their statues North Korea has actually built many statues in Africa and have many business dealings in Africa hey home sweet home this is my uh Hotel it's a bit rough around the edges but uh that's the lock for the door but the view is definitely itely in good abandoned a few of them are abandoned this hotel has seen better days but it's still good vibes here's a photo I took this morning when the sun rose pretty amazing with that Sahara dust so I'll leave some information below for Biggie's project it's pretty cool he's
providing education to those in the lower inome neighborhoods he's going to also be helping out with the neighbor there that lives in the cracked house obviously he can't rebuild the house but look after it with some food and things for his her kids he also teaches her kid so that's pretty cool and then obviously just to make the conditions of where he teaches the kids a bit better for them any amount helps you know even if a few of you put in one to $5 it would make a big difference you know so you know two seconds of your time I'll leave the link below where you can put that money no pressure If you can't just a cool thing to help out while we're here in Sagal in the next video uh I'm doing something I've never
done in all my time in Africa so it should be pretty interesting uh a little bit nervous but uh it's going to involve a long way and another country so I'll leave you on that and uh in case I don't see you good afternoon good evening and good night
