CC Sabathia and Ahmed Fareed discuss struggling MLB teams like the Red Sox, Mets, Tigers, and Giants, analyzing their poor starts and playoff chances.

Is it over for the Red Sox, Mets? | MLB According to CC (EPISODE 8). | Transcript:

All right, CC, the Jose Canseco has happened again. Jo Adell off the noggin. Is that a hit? Like, is that a homer, or is that an error? That's a home run. That is a home run. Yeah. That is unbelievable, man. I mean, you can't That is awesome. Oh my god. That's I think that's the second time Joe's done that, though. No way. like he I feel like he did it before in right field. I've seen this before. I'm telling you. Okay. All right, Steven, we got to look for the video. Is this the second time it's happened to Jo Adell?

It is MLB, according to CC Sabathia, on location, right now, away from studio, for the first time. Ahmed Fareed holding it down here. A dinner, you think that's it? Grayson Rodriguez was on the mound, right there, CC. Is You think a dinner, and this is all water under the bridge? bottle of wine, whatever the guy's into, you got to hook him up. I mean, he just gave him a couple of earned runs for him. What is the conversation that you would have with your outfielder if that happened? Oh, we're laugh I'm laughing about it.

Like, you know, I never was like the guy that got on my defenders or, you know, other players. Like, it's hard enough to play the game, and we all make mis- make mistakes, but please believe, like, a day or two later, I would have definitely made a joke about it, or you know, had something funny to say, but that's a tough one, man. And I promise you, I think Joe's done that twice. I And so, here's the thing. With Joe, you know that's going to be shown forever. We've been watching the Jose Canseco forever, and now we have the new one. That's it.

Yeah. No, like, that is literally going to show on bloopers, on anything, not top 10, forever. For the forever. You go, "Hey, I'm the guy that robbed the three home runs." I don't remember that. I remember that ball that hit off your head, and it was a home run. I do remember that one. Uh CC, so you're you're away from the studio for the first time. Was the traffic too bad getting in as what happened here? No, I mean I have other jobs. And today the uh another duty called I'm down here in my MLB office in the studio and um you know, just lucky enough to have a chance to you know, have a studio so we can get this so we can get our pod in. I'm I'm excited.

It looks good. So you can still speak freely, openly and freely about everything here, right, CC? that might be my problem. I speak openly and freely too much. In any room, that's the All right, good. So let's get right into it because we're going to start with some teams here that, you know, we had some high expectations for, playoff aspirations that are not that right now. And so we're going to ask you the question, how bad is it for these teams? Is it bad? Is it real bad? Or is it over for some of these teams? So let's start with my Detroit Tigers, unfortunately. They are struggling. Just a couple days ago they had the most losses in Major League Baseball. They got a couple wins against the Rays here

recently. They're last in the Central. Here's their recent 10 games. Not good. You got those wins against the Rays, but it was a terrible May for them. The run differential now is minus 30. They're now fourth in the AL Central. So CC, my Detroit Tigers, is it bad? Is it real bad? Or is it over? I think it's just bad. I think, you know, they had a couple of injuries. I think Glayber was out for a couple of weeks. Obviously, you know, Scubal going down is going to hurt you. Um but you would like to see this offense get going and you know, you want to see the Riley Greene's get going. You want to see Spencer Torkelson, um whoever else, um you know, uh Kerry Carpenter, you know, these guys are going to have to hit for them, you

know, to win this division. But I think, you know, being in the Central, um I feel like they can walk down the Guardians just like the Guardians walked them down last year. Um if they can get healthy enough, I know Glayber went deep last night. So I just think it's bad. I think they had a bunch of injuries. May is a you know, it's a tough month, but still got a lot of baseball left to play and I think it's a pretty good baseball team. It really has been a weird year for them cuz you look at some of the numbers for April and you're like, man, this is one of the best teams as striking the baseball and offensively and yeah, they've had Skubal down, they've had

Casey Mize down, they've had Verlander down basically the whole year. Those are guys that they were counting on. So we'll see if they can turn it around and that's a good point. Cleveland last year was what, 10 games back in the last month of the season, won the division. And literally walked them down that last weekend. So I mean it can happen. Okay. Especially in that division. Yeah, absolutely. All right, so just bad for the Detroit Tigers. How about the Boston Red Sox? They cleaned house earlier than maybe everyone thought. Uh three and seven in their last 10 games, but if you look at their run differential on the season, CC, it's

just minus seven. So how bad is it for the last place Boston Red Sox? It's over for the Red Sox. Oh, it's over? I think it's over for the Red Sox, man. Um I think you know, just having a tough year, you know, firing Cora, um being in the AL East. Um there are a lot of good teams in that division. Um you know, to go through to try to get back to the top or fight for a wild card. So I'm going to say it's over for them for this year. Um you know, just look to rebuild, get some of those young guys some at bats. I mean, Roman Anthony's still been out. Um it'd be nice to see, you know, Marcelo Mayer get a lot of at bats at a primary

position that you want him to play. Bring Christian Campbell back up, you know, and see what he you what you're going to get out of him. Um but I think for this year, I think the Red Sox is over. If you were not a Yankees Hall of Famer, what would your answer be? Would it still be it's over? Same. It would be the same. I don't have any ill will against the Red Sox or, you know, uh that organization. I actually have a lot of friends in that organization.

Um and uh it's just I never liked Fenway. I love the Red Sox, I just don't like Fenway. I don't like your home. I don't like where you play. Uh if I was going to give the Red Sox something, you look at May, they had the second highest jump in K rate in May for their pitching staff. Like their pitching staff did make a little bit of a jump even without Crochet. Sonny Gray pitched better. Peyton Tolley has come on and look like an ace. So And their staff was supposed to be like the focal point of their team, right? Like that was you know, they signed Ranger Suárez, Crochet, like you said, you

know, getting Sonny Gray. You know, and but you know, it's it's tough when you don't score runs and you need to go out and be perfect every single night. That's their issue and they've dug themselves quite a hole here. All right, so it's over for the Boston Red Sox. How about staying in the American League, the Houston Astros? They are fourth in the AL West right now. They're six and four in their last 10 games, but their run differential is minus 37. The Houston Astros, CC? I think it's really bad, but I don't think it's over. I think in that division they have a chance to, you know, fight back. I think if you if up to them, right?

The Astros, they would probably want to rebuild. They can probably move a couple of those pieces and get a little younger, but that division won't let them. Nobody's running away with that division. You would think that the Mariners were going to be the best team. I think a lot of people picked Texas at the beginning of the year with their pitching staff, but it's the Astros are always hanging around. They're always in it. You know, the it's always the brand recognition with the with that organization, right? So you think if they're close, they're going to have a chance to win. So I mean, I think it's real bad right now, but I think they still have a

chance to fight back and claw back and get into that division. Yeah, Seattle's [clears throat] won eight games in a row right now, but Houston is just six games back. Do you think the top of the division, you said it's going to be a wide open. Do you think this is real for Seattle? Do you think this is the start of something for them, this eight-game winning streak? I mean, you would think, right? That team is really good. It's put together great. I mean, the pitching staff is awesome. You know, if Julio gets going and they can get Cal back off the IL and him get him going, it's obviously the best team in the division, one of the better teams in the American League, but they just get off to such slow starts every single year that

[snorts] it's hard to pick them and it's hard for the Ashows to be like, "No, we're going to you know, not you know, we're we're going to sell at the trade deadline and you know, start try to rebuild." But, it's hard for them to do that when they're in the race every single year in that division. So, um you know, I think like we said, I mean, I think it's it's real bad if you look at the numbers you look at them right now, but I think they have a chance you know, just given that division. Yep. All right, over to the National League right now. The New York Mets, you were appealing to fans over there early in the season to stop booing Rudamon. They need the encouragement. I don't think they listened, but hey, they

have played a little bit better. So, the Mets, bad, real bad, or it's over? I want to say it's over for the Mets, man. They got uh I mean, it's a tough road. I you know, being in the National League, there's so many good teams over there. Um you know, I don't think Lindor still not back I don't know if he is or not. Um you know, Soto's hitting, but you know, nobody else really in the lineup is hitting. Um and everybody talks about, you know, you look at the way the roster was constructed. It's just not a very good team. You got a lot of people playing out of position. Um playing you know, playing places that they never played in their career um you know, as veterans. So, you know, I just think the roster was

put together bad and I think it's it's probably over for them. You saw those team stats for the season offensively not good. I will give them something though. You look at some of the numbers in May. They have the most barrels, the highest barrel percentage batting in May. So, they are striking the ball well. Soto coming back helps that. Their K rate is up on the pitching side of it. There are some glimmers for the Mets, but again, it's yeah, there's a lot of bad there as well and the vibes are not good in New York right now. it just you're right. It seems like the vibes are not good around the clubhouse, in the clubhouse. I mean, that's a lot of That's just us speculating, you know, being on the outside, but it's just the vibes do not seem where they need to be

for to be a winning team, especially in New York. You got to be together. You Yep. All right, let's end with the team that's I covered out in the West Coast for about five or six years. San Francisco Giants. When things are going well, Krukow and Kuip are awesome to listen to. Actually, they're always awesome to listen to, but it's just they're they're more excited when the team is winning. Uh they have not been doing that this year. They are what? 15 games below.500. Three wins in the last 10. They're getting outscored by 67 runs a game. Only the Colorado Rockies are worse. Is it bad, real bad, or over for the Giants?

Over for the Giants, man. I think it was over before it started for the Giants. I did that very first game out in for the Netflix game with the Yankee series. And that uh it was not good. Um obviously, they got the names in that lineup. Um but they're just, you know, they're they're not producing. I don't know if it's the ballpark. Um you know, being so big and, you know, hard to score runs, hard to hit homers, obviously. Um but, you know, I seen a clip the other day where, you know, they're getting challenged in the zone more than any other team in baseball and hitting the lowest average on, you know, balls in the zone.

Um which I think speaks to the ballpark, too, right? When you play in a big ballpark like that and the ball doesn't fly, I can throw the ball over the plate and make you hit it as far as you want. That's how it was back in Comerica back in the day in Detroit. You know, you just throw the ball over the plate and let them hit it as far as [snorts] they can and the ballpark's going to hold it. So, um I think that plays into it a little bit, too. Yeah, I mean, that's two things working there, right? It's like you're not scared of the ballpark and maybe you're not scared of the hitters, even though Devers is played a little bit better recently, but uh they just don't they

don't have the depth there. Wow, imagine if you would have done that after the first game. You go, "It's over for the Giants." You just said that during the broadcast. Imagine you did that. I wouldn't have said that, but I said that's definitely what I was thinking. Yeah, how do you think they're going to do this year? I actually think they're done. I think it's over. 161 to go. Yeah, good luck watching all that. All right, we got to take a break. When we come back, I put my geek glasses on once again, and I show some video of things that might make CC mad as a Hall of Fame pitcher. We'll show that when we come back.

And Contreras sends it deep to center. On the run, Thomas. THIS ONE IS WAY GONE. WILD BILL touches them all. Two-run home run makes it five to nothing Milwaukee. He has killed the Diamondbacks over the years. There was never a doubt that ball hit his bat, it was gone. I mean, he had that timed. 419 ft, 106 off the bat. All right, it's time for me to geek out. I'm in my lab. I'm looking at my Statcast data. This is what I do. I put my glasses on. I'm losing my eyesight. that graphic. That's fire.

Uh more gray than I think I actually have, but who I who knows? Maybe that is accurate. Uh I haven't looked at myself recently. So, that was 35 seconds. Statcast tracks all the stuff. You know that, CC. 35 seconds on that home run trot by uh William Contreras. Uh that is the longest time home to home this season for a home run trot. You if you were on the mound, CC, and you saw that, you would be thinking what? I wouldn't be thinking anything. I'd be thinking about the next pitch. I was never worried about like a guy flipping a bat or walking down the line. I was always trying to see where the ball was going or more worried about why I threw

that pitch. So, I think people that like get mad at guys celebrating is always the loser, right? Like if you watch Georgia and Liberty the other day in the College World Series, Trey Lipscomb hit the homer. He's, you know, going nuts. It's a big homer to put them up and you know, he gets tossed out of the game, but it's because the Liberty guys are upset. Yeah. So, it's always about like if you don't want to see somebody celebrate or you don't want to see them get emotional or react in a good way, then don't give up the homer. Don't lose. I get that too. way to combat that is just don't be better than the other guy. But at a certain point you want the game to progress. You're like, "Hey, could you just score already so I can throw to

this next guy? Could you just go?" it. I absolutely It's so hard to hit in the big leagues and when you hit a homer, enjoy it. Good point. Uh Wild Bill, he did enjoy that for 35 seconds, the longest home to home this year. All right, you want to know the fastest home to home? Here it is. Let's show it to you here. It's his this [clears throat] is Bobby Witt Jr. This is an inside-the-park home run against my Detroit Tiger. This is an in-the-park home run, CC, on a ground ball.

Oh my gosh. Oh, what did Oh, he hit the corner. Yeah. Uh Carey, what are we doing out there? it's rough. I would be on the mound and panicking. Look how fast he's running now. He's flying. Look at that. 14 seconds. He is flying. It's got to be one of the most exciting, if not the most exciting player in baseball. I agree. He's He's number one. He's number one for me out there. I mean, that's that's incredible. I mean, that changes the game. That changes the game from so many different aspects.

Absolutely. I mean, you when you give up that ball on the mound, you just see it go down the line like, "Oh, it's a double." Then you see him flying around second, you're like, "Oh, okay. It's a triple." Then you're like, "Throw the ball in already." Like, "What are we doing?" I know. But you know, you got to give him credit for hustling out of the box, all right? He saw it right away, probably thinking two, picked up his uh his third base coach and was like, "Hey, let's let's make this a homer."

I wish they were better cuz he is so fun to watch, but yeah, he could have gone around the bases twice in the time that uh William did one and have seven seconds to spare. hit it as far as William did, though. That's That's true. That is true. All right, so you know, as a pitcher, you're on the mound, you're just trying to waste a pitch sometimes. You got two strikes on the batter. It's like, all right, throw one high, climb the ladder. You've done that plenty in your career to great success. So, let me show you one. This is the highest pitch hit for a base hit. This is Junior Caminero, 4.23 ft from the ground and he shoots it into right field. That is Do you know what that is? You That's called elite barrel control right

there. Being able to get on top of a fastball over your head is incredible. Like that, I mean, you just Sometimes you just got to tip your cap to the other player and that's one right there. So, in When I was younger though, I gave up a lot of 0-2 hits when I was a young player. So, I would get fined if I gave up a hit with 0-2 or 1-2. So, I would have to like either spike it in the ground or throw it back to the backstop. Um, but I had to I gave up a lot of like 0-2 1-2 hits when I was younger. Um, so I definitely figured out how to waste a pitch big time. But, that right there, I mean, you just got to you got to tip your cap to Junior right there.

Well, he tried. Yeah, Anthony Okay, don't get fined on that one cuz he was like, I tried to climb the ladder on him and he just swung at it. So, yeah, what did you have to do? See then it was just like you said you spiked it or you Like, what was the effective way cuz you don't want to just waste a pitch and the guy sees a ball out of your hand? Yeah, you know what's so when I was younger, this is before I had my slider. I just threw like a big curveball and I had a changeup. I would just have to catch a get in the other batter's box and throw a fastball out there and then try to get to, you know, a different count where I can get back to my curveball. But, I

didn't really have a pitch that I could get hitters out with or strike hitters early in my career not until I developed that slider. That was something I could be confident in that was going to be in and out of the strike zone. Everything else I threw was in the strike zone for too long. All right, so here's here's another situation where a pitcher was just trying to waste a pitch. This is JT Brubaker. Gavin Sheets at the plate here. It's 2-2 on this one and he goes a full foot off the corner, 14.9 in. so a foot plus, and Gavin just goes boom. Base hit. That is Yeah, I mean, those are the ones that you lose sleep over right there.

The soft hit, you know, you know, butt out, you know, bell in the first base. You did everything right. barrel on it, you know what I'm saying? Like, those are the ones you lose sleep over, but those are the ones that like as a pitcher, you know, you come back in and the pitcher goes like, "Oh, you're getting soft contact, you know, you're pitching well, blah." But why I got runners all over the bases then? It don't matter about soft contact. I need to get outs, you know what I'm saying? So, those are the most frustrating hits you give up. You give up a line drive laser double or whatever, it is what it is. Often times,

you probably made a mistake. Right there when you execute a pitch and then give up a hit, super frustrating. Yeah, and especially that far outside, you just don't even think they're going to offer at it, and if they do, you certainly don't think they're going to get a hit, but Gavin Sheets did that exactly. All right, I got two more for you here. I got the throws of 100 mph or more in Major League Baseball this year from an outfielder. We know that Misiewicz and what he does on the mound. The outfielders are doing it this year. We have seen it 16 times in the outfield. We have seen a bunch, I think four from Jack three from Jack Caglionne of the Royals, three from O'Neil Cruz from the Pirates. We got a couple from Jordan

Walker and the Cardinals. Carson Benge, some surprising flame coming out of that right arm going over 101 a couple of times from the outfield. CC, we're seeing the guys on the mound throwing over 100, and now we're consistently seeing guys in the outfield throwing over 100. Yeah, it's incredible. I mean, you know, O'Neil Cruz is basically just a stack cast monster, right? Like, everything he does is at the top of the charts.

Um, what's crazy to me is when I think about Jack Caglionne, I'm like, put him on the mound. Exactly. Let him be a two-way. Like, let him do what he's naturally done his whole life. Um, pitch and hit, and I think, you know, we may get some, you know, better results out of him. I think, you know, he's he's done that his whole life. He did it the whole time he was at Florida. So, I would love to see you know, Kameron get back on the mound. What do you think the hesitancy is for the Royals to do something like that at this point? just trying to let him develop as a hitter, right? It's It's It's very hard to do both.

Try to do a to do both at this level. [snorts] Is he elite? Obviously, it's only one person has ever really done it. And we're in the middle of it now. But I think if anybody could do it, I think it's him. He's big enough. He's He's physical enough. So, I mean hopefully, you know, down the line you never lose your arm, right? Like he can always go back to the mound at any time. But I would love to see him get a chance to do both. That's what I really thought too. I thought when Shohei came through, it was like one of those four-minute mile situations where it's like once the guy ran the four-minute miles, like everyone's like, oh, wait, that's possible. And then you saw a bunch of other people do that. I thought we would see more of that now and we haven't. I

would I hope that Jack maybe gets that opportunity to do something like that. When you were playing, CC, was there ever a position player where you're like, man, we should just throw him on the mound and see what happens? Shin-Soo Choo. Choo was definitely He was definitely could have definitely did both. I mean, he was good enough on the mound. He threw 97 off the mound, threw strikes. And obviously, he was the hitter he was. So, he [clears throat] he's the first person comes to mind when I think about somebody that probably could have did this before Shohei. I think it makes the game so much more interesting, too. And so, I hope we do see a little bit more. And maybe I got one more for you. Maybe it will be Mason

Winn from the St. Louis Cardinals because of the 21 fastest throws from infielders this year, he's got seven. He's peppered all over the top 10. I You know, CC, I love this because yeah, hitting is such a huge part, hitting the long ball, three-run home run, but you got these guys with these skills like a Mason Winn who can be a star in their own right. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I remember Mason Winn throwing across the diamond in like perfect game and seeing that in on video. So, um, know, he's always had that cannon um, and it is just great to see him be able to flash that off. I mean, and be a

great defender, right? Like he's a great defender at short um, for the Cardinals and uh, that arm comes in handy for sure. All right, CC, that I geeked out. Thanks for geeking out with me. That's fun. Like you the numbers, they're not all nerdy. They're not all nerdy here. All right, we got to take a break and we come back, we're going to call some people out. People aren't intimidated when I do it, but CC's going to do it too and they're going to be intimidated. That's next. So, check out this guy. Oh, excuse me, mister this guy. A commenter on our last show right here on YouTube.

Straight disrespect to the Rays. We did not have the Rays in our top 10 in the power rankings even though they had the best record in the American League. OMG, it's Bucky. He told him to cry about it. And he goes, he will. And so, maybe he had a good cry about the whole the fact that the Rays were not in there. So, now it's time to show me something. And so, CC, I just want I'll start. I want the Rays to show me something. Prove that we were wrong. Rays to show me something, too. And I we said the disclaimer before we did our uh, power rankings last week. If you don't like it, get your own show. It is what it is.

It's our show. We can do whatever we want. We can put whatever team we want in the top 10. But so, I looked at the like the Rays like you know, you look at the hitting and the pitching, they really are kind of like middle of the pack. Now, have they gotten lucky? Do they know how to win? Maybe all of that. I do know one thing in May, I was looking through their schedule, CC. They had two games versus a team that's currently over 500. That was the Yankees. They went one and one. And so, their level of competition has not been great. In June, they do have the Red Sox, they do have the Dodgers, they do have the Nationals, they do have the Diamondbacks. So, they're going to have

a chance to show us something. But at this point, I'm like, prove it to me. Prove it to me, Rays. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, they got off to a great start, right? And they and yes, it's the Tampa Bay Rays. They are not scared to play in the AL East. They know what they're going up against. They're not scared to go in the Yankee Stadium. All these different things, but I think if like you said, looking at the underlying numbers and understanding that the way they play the game, um it's going to be hard for them to beat the Yankees in a seven-game series if you know if they get to that in October. Who needs to show you something, CC?

Man, I forgot what I was supposed to who I was supposed to be talking about. Well, you did bring up in our pre-show the Washington Nationals. You did say the Washington Nationals, but does that still apply? No, it does. I would love the Nationals to you know to show me something. I mean, they're off to a good start, 31 and 31, young team. Um you know, will they trade CJ Abrams? um you know, make some trades at the deadline or to maybe sell? Who knows, you know what I'm saying? Um but I do I would love to see that team um you know, turn it around and get going in the right direction. Young

squad um and I love some James Wood. So, I want to see him play in October. I know why you forgot there because the real team that you want to show you something is playing in basketball. Is that right? Is that not true? Um my mind right now is locked in on the Knicks. Yeah, so I would love for the Knicks to show me something down in San Antonio. They need to win one of these two games on the road. Um you know, obviously San Antonio's coming off of a tough series, seven games. They I feel like they got Cleveland and Philly coming off tough series where they were rested. Um so, we'll just see how they have how they play

tonight. Hopefully, they don't come out flat, but I'm excited for the Knicks, man. I mean, it's the first time in the finals [snorts] since 1999. Yeah. Um the city's on fire. Um everybody I know here is a Knicks fan, so I'm just excited for you know, the city and these people. And something tells me we might see CC on the baseline in one of these games. I don't know. I'm just feeling like that could happen. might We might I don't know if I'll be full Knicks gear again. I wore full Knicks fan last time, but uh I'll definitely be at the game.

All right. In the future, show me something, CC, on the court.
